Chapter 7: Sudden Marriage Proposal – Part 2

ーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーーー

Strong wind was blowing, creating a hissing sound in its wake and beautiful petals were fluttering from somewhere. I felt like I had been proposed just now but maybe I was just imagining things? His passionate blue eyes were locked at me but….

Marriage? No, no. Impossible.

I quickly stood up and bowed at him.

“Umm… I need to work now. Erm… Excuse me!”

I bowed deeply and left in a haste. I wondered what I should do if he were to run after me but thankfully he didn’t. After much struggle, I finally arrived at the imposing front door. From there, I circled the building, looking for the backdoor. The front door of a noble’s residence was only exclusive to its resident and their guest. I had to enter from the back door because I was here due to my job.

Even the duke’s back door looked praiseworthy. When I rang the lion shaped door knob, a young maid with freckles and red hair, peeked her face out. She looked like she was about 15 years old.

“May I ask who you are?”

“Umm, I’m a member of the Royal Knight. I’m here regarding my enlistment to the Fenrir Knight.”

“The Royal Knight… Ah… If you’re here to get enlisted, I was told to refuse you.”

“Umm, that’s not it….”

“Do you have your papers with you?”

“Yes.”

This exchange would’ve gone a lot smoother had I shown my transfer document right off the bait. I immediately took the paper out and handed it to the maid.

“Umm, do you mind if I take these with me for a second?”

“Yes, feel free to do so.”

As soon as the backdoor was closed shut, the cold north wind blew through me. It was unpleasantly chilly today. Winter must be near. I clutched my coat tight, bracing the cold air.

But still, this building was really impressive. It looked like it was a five stories building and the two-storied building behind it must be Fenrir Knight’s station? Or maybe it was the dormitory?

As I was looking around restlessly, the back door was opened. An elderly gentleman who looked like he was in a hurry came to sight.

“My apologies, Nonoire-sama! I failed to properly relay the information about you… Please, do come inside.”

“Ye-Yes.”

The response I got went from apathetic to cordial. There was a deeper reason behind the maid’s response. Duke Fenrir was only 23 years old. He was young and still single. Because of that, daughters of noble families tend to intrude on his residence, trying to get close to him. It seemed the pretext of joining the Fenrir Knight or applying for a job in the mansion was a daily occurrence to them. The maid must’ve mistaken me for a noble daughter who was trying to marry the duke because of that.

“I’m really, really sorry.”

“No, please don’t worry about that. But still, it must’ve been a lot of work to deal with that.”

“Yes… Because the Master is of marriageable age…”

“He doesn’t have a fiancée?”

“He doesn’t. He said he wants to look for true love.”

“Haaaah………”

It seemed Duke Fenrir was carefully looking for a woman who could become his wife.

What a tough job they have…

I thought to myself, as if it was someone else’s problem.

“Over here. The Master has been waiting for you.”

“Thank you very much.”

I nodded at the old man and knocked at the door.

“Come in.”

I received a reply almost immediately. Somehow I felt like I had heard his voice before but it must be just my imagination. Holding onto my wildly pounding heart, I went inside. The room was more spacious than I expected. Sitting on the couch, there was a fluffy looking big white dog.

“You’ve finally come.”

“Pardon?”

“Magic Soldier Melodia Nonoire, you may sit there.”

“………”

“Did you not hear me?”

“Ah, no. I heard you perfectly.”

With some awkward scuffling, I entered the room. I bowed once before I took a seat in the chair.

“Fumu~ We’ve met not too long ago, haven’t we?”

“Ye-Yes.”

It wasn’t my imagination. I really had heard his voice before. This person before me was definitely the same beastman I had met in the garden, the one I had mistaken as Fulmoff and to top it all off… The one who had proposed to me.

Maybe this person is Duke Fenrir himself…?

With a trembling voice, I began to talk.

“Err-Errm… What a nice weather we have…”

“The sky is getting cloudy though.”

The weather had been so fine just earlier but right now, gray clouds began to fill the sky. It was as if the sky was reflecting my inner heart.

“Umm… My name is Melodia Nonoire.”

“My name is Dietrich de Fenrir. As you’ve already known, I’m the head of the Fenrir Family and the captain of the Fenrir Knight First Cavalry Unit.”

I knew it, he wasn’t Fulmoff. Furthermore, I couldn’t conceal my surprise when I knew that dog was actually the duke himself and the captain of the First Cavalry Unit.

“U-Umm… Fenrir-sama, ah… May I call you Fenrir-sama?”

“Dietrich. You can call me Dietrich.”

“That’s a little….”

“You may only call me with my given name.”

“…..Th-Then Dietrich-sama….”

“Fumu~ Well, that’s fine. I will also call you Melodia, if you don’t mind?”

“No. Well…”

For the time being, I should put the topic of how we should address each other aside and ask the thing that had been occupying my mind the most.

“Dietrich-sama, you are a beastman, right?”
