The Fresh Start In An RPG World

Chapter 12 - A hero's duty

"What do you mean?" I ask when I hear Ruby's words.

What I was afraid of really happened, I knew something like that could happen, but I still didn't try to hide my abilities, as I'm an idiot.

"First of all." Ruby talks by looking around. "Come with me, I'll give you an explanation."

She kept her voice down so that only those around us would listen. Guards surrounded me in all directions, they didn't try to arrest me or anything like that, they seemed to be there just so I wouldn't try to escape.

"Shall we?" he says turning around and starting to walk.

We all went to the castle, and on the way I felt no hostility towards me. I started to understand better how my vampire instinct works, it seems to be something like animals, that they can feel when there is a threat, something that vampires are born possessing, but there is also a way to hide, at least that is what I believe when I observe some soldiers looking at Chloe.

Arriving at the throne room everyone makes a row, leaving me in focus a few steps forward.

"If you'll excuse everyone but Ioan Ilie." Ruby says he's sitting on the throne.

"Yes, ma'am." All the soldiers respond at the same time.

Chloe and Lucio were together too, unlike the soldiers they were very nervous in front of the queen. Everyone leaves leaving only the two of us in the room, which seems very dangerous to me, to leave with a stranger.

"I know what you're thinking." He says smiling after seeing my shock expression. "The truth is, I don't need any guard, I can assure you today that I am the strongest in the whole kingdom."

"Forgiveness for my ignorance, I'm not used to common sense yet." I speak with a brief reverence.

"Don't worry, it's just something normal for newborns." He answers by shrugging.

"Thank you." I thank her.

She seemed to be lost in her thoughts, after some quiet time she talks again.

"A hero..." He looks towards me during the pause in his speech, but then he talks again. "I guess you've heard about it, right? Heroes.... "

"Yes, I have been told a little, if I am not mistaken, it is those of great strength born among humans." I answer your question.

I remember Chloe talking shallowly about it, but the hardest part is pretending to be unaware of God's explanations.

"You're not totally wrong, that would be the beginning. There are also heroes in other races, although they are not called this way, it is customary to be born among the goblins, the so-called goblin king, as well as the demon king, a hero born among the demons," explains Ruby.

She takes a little break, everything's quiet. After a while, a great deal of murderous instinct is directed at me. I jump backwards, reflexly put my arms in front of my face, defending something.

I can't even see what happened and I'm already down on the ground. Ruby's got his knee over my c.h.e.s.t and his right hand was holding my neck.

"As expected of a hero, even with our huge difference in strength we still managed to hold on to the first attack," he says with a smile.

He hadn't even noticed, but he was holding his other hand.

"Just reflection." I answer.

That was the truth, I just tried to defend myself anyway.

"Don't be modest." He talks about getting up. "Even what you call 'reflection only' can be the difference between life and death." Finish talking, I'll reach out and get up.

I'll hold your hand and get up. My right hand, which I was able to hold to its attack, was burning, as if it had been burned.

"Do you know the reason for my attack?" he asks.

"Show the difference in strength?"

"You understand things fast." He talks as he sits on the throne again.

Just like the first time I saw her, anyone who saw her could see her posture was impeccable. Looking at me, she smiles, like nothing happened.

"We vampires are a race with a long lifespan, we can't be killed by old age like many others, you know what that means? We need time to get strong. In spite of this, in the course of time we become relatively peaceful, we are on the side of the demons, but we maintain a good relationship with humans, do you understand the meaning of this?" Ruby finishes and waits for my answer.

"Vampires don't need heroes." I answer.

"Exactly, don't get me wrong, we won't expel you or try to hurt you, we'll let you go, you can do whatever you want, like any other vampire, but I want you to keep your identity a secret."

"I understand..." I speak when I hear it.

"Don't you want to know why?" he asks with some surprise.

It is not a question of not wanting to know, even though I already have an idea of why, it just seems inappropriate, as if I were questioning your order.

"If I may, I'd like to know why." I do.

"We vampires don't think much of having a hero, but have you ever wondered what would happen if humans or demons knew something like that? Humans would be afraid, after all, we are on the side of the demons, whereas the demons would want us to cut the ties with humans, they would have the advantage of that."

So the vampires intend to continue with their neutrality, despite being a race that submits itself to the demon king they are not forced to fight, the reason? Vampires are strong, both sides have fears about this race.

"Moreover, not talking to anyone also includes us vampires, those who were with us are reliable, but not everyone can be considered allies." She puts a certain grudge at the end.

I don't need any explanation about it, I'm from another world, taking his story into account it's easy to understand, several must be the power struggles.

"I'll keep your advice in mind." I bow.

"Lucio will guide you." That's the last thing she'll tell me.

I'm dismissed after that. I'm happy to have chosen a race where being a hero doesn't mean much, otherwise I'd probably lose all my freedom or even worse things.

As I left the castle, I met Lucio and he seemed to be waiting for me.

"So what?" He seemed a little apprehensive.

"It's all settled." I'll answer that.

"Thanks for everything." I say to him.

He probably mediated this matter for my sake.

"No need to worry." Your face gets a little red. "I'm your tutor, we're practically family."

"Yeah." I feel like I have a blushing face too.

It's nice to have people who care about you.

After all that we went back to the training camp. Chloe is giving me some fencing lessons, although saying 'lesson' we just fought, I always learned more in practice. In the end we fought twenty matches, where my balance was twenty consecutive defeats, but I won nine out of twelve when I used the spear, his skill is really surprising, but he still lacks experience.

"You're really very good." She speaks by lifting me off the ground.

I give her a brief sarcastic smile. I was almost killing myself to follow his movements, the only thing I'm doing is taking advantage of his mistakes to shorten the difference in speed and power, in skill there's not much.

"Ioan, come here for a minute." I hear Lucio's voice.

I didn't even realize his presence.

Let's go to a place with no people before he starts talking.

"Wait a second." He talks as he raises his hand.

I feel like something happened, as if the wind had gotten stronger for an instant, but I can't explain that right feeling.

"What was that?" I ask when the wind calms down completely.

"I have activated a magic around us, so that those who are not inside will not be able to hear what we are talking about.

I try to concentrate so that my hearing gets better, so I can't hear what's going on outside the magic either.

"I want to explain a few things." His expression was more serious than usual.

"I'm listening."

"First of all, vampires welcome all those born of darkness, the originals, just like you, but Ruby has a policy that gives a lot of freedom to everyone, so you can leave the Kingdom whenever you want." he begins to explain.

I already knew this information, but I still think it's impressive. The vampires are not a numerous race, one might think that they would want to join as much as possible, something like union makes strength.

"In itself this policy is good for us, but we are going through a time of great tension." complete.

"What's connected to this policy of freedom?" I ask.

"It's one of the reasons, but not the only one. The Scarlet clan leads this Kingdom since its formation, in fact it is not strange for races like vampires, after all, we have the longest longevity in the world. The discontent is mainly about Queen Ruby, she took the throne just a decade ago, her predecessor was the founder of the Kingdom.

"Then the problem would be the difference between the two governments." I speak after hearing it.

"Exactly." Lucio answers. "The old king kept his dominion with an iron hand, all those who opposed him were crushed, it was also the right hand of the demon king, but when Ruby assumed power she approached humans, moving away from the demons, moreover some time ago created this new policy, other ancient clans think that this is not the proper way to govern themselves.

That means we're on the verge of a civil war, that's pretty complicated, as a hero I'd have an active role or something, but there's the question of forces, as Ruby said, vampires get stronger over time.

"You want me to do something?" I ask.

"On the contrary, I want you not to interfere."
