Great Sage 20 – The Queen’s Sacrifice

“Queen, prepare for a sacrifice“1

As I give my orders, Haruka finally recovers from Queen’s overwhelming mana,
“What do you mean by that”

She raises her hand meekly.

“A direct translation is [Self Sacrifice] but in chess terms it means to [to give up a piece in order to gain an advantageous position]”2
Maya-chan, who is sitting next to Haruka, explains.

It seems Maya-chan doesn’t play chess anymore but when she was a child I heard she often played with her grandfather.

“Since the Lithomanmari Trade Association is quite far from here, the enemy must be planning to make me use teleportation magic”

The exit for teleportation magic appears first, making it easier for enemies to detect. Not to mention that until the caster is fully transported, they are unable to use magic.

If you try and force it you could end up stuck inside a sub dimension, and at worst you may end up drifting though time as a [Lost Child of Time].

“Purposely drawing me here was probably also part of their plan to make me use teleportation magic”

The Lithomanmari Trade Association’s building is constructed near to the government owned port.
If I break the sound barrier with flying magic then it shouldn’t be much longer than teleportation, but even with defensive magic I probably won’t be able to take Haruka and Maya-chan along.

I’ve never seen someone overcome the speed of sound with just their physical body except for master after all.

“So we’ll teleport Queen in first as bait to draw their attacks, then teleport in to turn the tables”

“But won’t that put Queen-san in danger”
Maya-chan asks,

“I’ll be impressed if they can scratch me”
“Besides if even a fragment of her remains, she’ll immediately regenerate”

Our words cause Haruka to tremble more,

“Hmmm, I can’t quite agree with this but….. whatever, so what should we do”
Maya-chan has a sour look.

“While Queen is drawing their attacks, I’ll open the exit at a different location, I’ll go through first, followed by Haruka then Maya-chan”

I then explain to the two how I want them to perform first aid on the wounded like last time when…..

“Hey Darling, why won’t you use healing magic”
Queen smiles while clinging to me.

“I’m not good with it”
“Are you still bothered about that”

“I won’t bend on my principles”
“I don’t have any regrets, I love you after all”

I make a strained smile,

“Did something happen”
A concerned Maya-chan looks up to my face.

“Long ago when I wasn’t able to regulate very well, I turned an old lady with a bad hip back into a beautiful woman, reviving a legendary witch who was said to have died…..”

“Yeah I more or less understand now. Aunty, Haruka, and I will deal with the injured so don’t worry”

Maya-chan laughs.

I deploy two teleportation spells at once,

“You’re as skillful as usual, Darling. I can’t think of someone who can do something like this apart from that idiot, Kate”

Wearing my robe, Queen steps into one of them,
“Then I’ll go warm the place up first and wait for youー”

With a wink , she jumps through.

Using a midair display of the view sent to my smartphone from the auto-tracking pawn following her, I wait for the right time.

Like here, the surrounding buildings look like they would on a normal day, but two objects fly towards Queen.

“Are those missiles?”
“Furthermore there’s curses set upon them”

Maya-chan and Haruka speak up.
It seems the technology to integrate modern weaponry and magic finally exists.

Queen dodges them and they break apart in midair causing insect like things to fly out.

“Wasp shikigami!”

Haruka moves closer to the screen in concern but, with a light breath, Queen burns them all up.

However the black smoke obscures her vision, causing a second and third set of missiles to hit.
It seems the first missiles had some chaff(jamming) that prevented magic detection.

“I’ve got lots to learn about magic combat with modern weapons”

Looking at the burning Queen, I slowly make my way to the other teleport spell,
“Hey, aren’t you worried about Queen!”

Maya-chan yells.

“Of course I’m worried. She’s got a short temper you know, if we don’t hurry the whole city will vanish”

Just as I was about to erase the midair display, the flames die down revealing an uninjured Queen…..
