The Heathen
Chapter 5 - Nomadic (III/III)
Aos' laughter although brought joy, was soon interrupted by a slew of panicked horns. The horns quickly caused solemn in the tribe as several groups of men and women brandished sets of worn swords and axes.
The Patriarch's face had turned downtrodden and after a sad exhale he said, "I'm sorry little Aos. Hopefully next time we get more time together..."
The Patriarch single-handedly pulled a dauntingly large warhammer from his back. His arms visibly increasing in size as he ran in the direction of the horns. As the Patriarch ran ahead, the groups of clansmen who had already brandished their weapons joined him.
The Patriarch and clansmen ran quite far, almost out of sight. Brenna quietly observed them with Aos in her arms. Aos' gaze was drawn onto the group as she noticed that her father had also joined the Patriarchs party. Then, just as the Patriarchs party was about to run out from the valley a large pack of dire wolves who had stumbled across the Fervir clan in the midst of packing up their camp took the opportunity to assault them.
The direwolf pack and the clansmen rushed to meet each in battle. The closer and closer that the two parties got a visible change began occurring to the clansmen. Each and every warrior's skin began to change. The skin reddened, veins which had been prominent became even more so. The blue colour of the blood inside the veins turned red. Turning the clansmen party into a mighty sight.
With the first clash, both parties began an all-out brawl. The symphony of combat rang through the valley. For every wound inflict against a direwolf a malicious gnaw would occur. Although the clansmen were struggling against the large pack, the Patriarch swang his warhammer with ease and strength taking several wolves out with every swing. The Patriarch alone broke the tide of battle and over a few minutes forced the direwolves to turn and flee. The clansmen had lost no one, while over two dozen red and bloody corpses of direwolves lay sprawled on the snow.
Aos in awe of the sight she has seen was flabbergasted. Brenna smiled as she noted that no one had died and that no one suffered fatal wounds. While Brenna was still smiling she placed Aos once again on the snow so she could finish packing up. Aos still staring far off into the distance watched as the wounds which the direwolves had inflicted onto the clansmen faded and healed. Once there were no visible wounds the reddened skin and red veins that had covered the clansmen head to toe slowly returned to normal.
