The Liberal Assassin

Chapter 63 - Accidentally Waging War

Those guards were weak, way weaker than they should be. Something didn't feel right and uneasiness coiled my gut. However, time is of essence. When the door opened, I went with the plan despite the chills going down my spine. Everything was going just the way it should but something felt off.

The office had only one door that was locked and could be accessed by keying in a passcode. Before I could use the code cracker, Khronos had that door opened as promised. The base had no proper defences, unlike Luna Security and that screamed trap to me.

In the office, I had to navigate through the piles of paperwork for the right researches. The research dated back to as old as two hundred years with the names of the victims arranged in alphabetical order and a very detailed description of their biology written in the experiment log. The longer the files, the scarier the descriptions were. I looked for Mia's folder and the experiment overview together with some form of signature. The signature was the only concrete evidence we lacked to bring everything to light and nail the Parliament for their crimes.

The section indicating victims whose names started with "M" came to view and I rejoiced a little. While searching for Mia, I heard footsteps and paused. The person who came to view was instantly recognisable.

That dark, long straight hair that framed a face that was set in a permanent scowl was unmissable. Kalifa Zeidner walked with the cl.i.c.k.i.n.g and clacking of her heels against the polished tiles of the office. The light camouflage technology was definitely working as she passed by me with no indication of knowledge about my presence.

I trailed the lady, keeping a distance between us and heard Khronos hyperventilate comically into the earpiece about all that evilness in her. That man had a deep personal grudge that I couldn't understand.

Kalifa sat down on a chair that was almost as comfortable as the one I had at the Academy. I peered over her shoulder to peek at the doc.u.ments she was working on and felt my heart clench as Mia's name was on one of the folders. Other doc.u.ments that she looked through seemed trivial all of a sudden.

I didn't realise how much I was leaning over until Kalifa shifted in her chair to lean back, bumping into my shoulder. The woman screamed like no tomorrow and definitely slammed the hidden emergency button underneath her table while hopping around in a rather haphazard manner. Khronos stopped his ramblings and cursed once before hammering on the keyboard.

I knew things were bad because the bas.e.m.e.nt went into red alert with doors closing down to trap the intruder. Kalifa pulled out her dialler while I wasn't looking and I was two seconds too slow to end her life. The moment I did, the holographic projection of Rion appeared.

The man's focus was on his now lifeless lover and I used that chance to grab Mia's folder along with others that contained her signature and looked important. Deciding that I had everything I required, the capsule timed explosives were dropped, the countdown had begun.

Using the charged orb, I managed to get out of the base to where Nash was just in time to hear the deafening boom as the lab collapsed. In the middle of the wastelands lay a huge pile of rubble now unhidden by light bending technology.

Nash gaped at it until I deactivated my camouflage, scaring the bones out of his skin.

"Blizzard baloney! Say something if you're here already! How did it go? Did you find anything?"

I nodded and shoved the doc.u.ments to Nash who seemed puzzled. "Take this to Khronos. I have to visit someone now."

"Why? What's the hurry?"

I glanced at the old man briefly. "Rion knows she's dead. I wasn't fast enough. If I don't go now I won't be able to get into the Inner City. I trust you to bring the last of what we need to Khronos!"

Without waiting for Nash's reply, I reactivated the camouflage and teleported away.
