The Unknown God

Chapter 36 - Never challenge me on the Battlefield... If you want to live.

Like a spring, Simply launched himself at the bloodthirsty wolf-like beast. Mid-air his body twisted out of the beast's path.

"Stabby stabby," his mouth curved into a smile.

The short spear in his hands vanished. Reappearing in the rider's c.h.e.s.t. The impaled goblin blicked, as his brain tried to process what had just happened. At that moment, Simply still in the air, flashed past him. His fingers clutched the spear's shaft below the metallic tip. And ripped the rest out of the goblin, reclaiming his weapon.

The goblin looked at the bloody hole left behind by the spear with a disbelieving look.

"Damn," uttered the goblin, before passing out.

[You have killed a Goblin]

Simply continued on his killing spree.

Behind him, the worg riders and the expedition forces crashed at full speed. At first, the troops panicked. Some gritted their teeth, others paled. Fear crossed the front row's faces. However, after a moment had passed, the troops quickly realised their strategic advantage. The combination of acute spears working in conjunction with longbows firing at practically point blank range left behind an increasing mountain of enemy corpses.

Simply spotted the enemy commander at the back of his troops. He promptly appeared before the hobgoblin captain.

"He is going to kill you!" loudly proclaimed the goblin beside his hobgoblin superior. "But, I'm the one who is going to have fun with all the leftover bits!"

The yellow-faced hobgoblin proudly readied himself and with a gleaming flash of his spear, he jabbed towards Simply's silhouette. But the shadow of Simply suddenly jerked and the fatal thrust was deflected by Simply's mirrored jab, it passed his body by a hair's breadth. By that time, his short spear already slammed hard into the c.h.e.s.t of the yellow-faced hobgoblin. The distance between the two closed within an instant.

Badly startled, the hobgoblin attempted to swipe with his spear, only for it to be parried by Simply's sword. Yes, sword. The short spear had disappeared and in its place was a longsword. The parry seamlessly transitioned into a riposte.

With a loud swish, Simply's left hand traced a path with his blade across the enemy commander's neck. After the blade reemerged from the other side of the neck, the head of the hobgoblin flew off and landed on the ground with blood spurting all over and the body still standing slumped and unmoving.

[You have killed a Hobgoblin Captain]

All that happened within a time frame so short that the observers only saw the two figures clash once before witnessing the gruesome death of the hobgoblin.

The goblin standing behind was shocked into a stupor. Before he recovered, he heard Simply say, "It's your turn next."

Seeing Simply rush over like an unstoppable storm, the goblin scrambled to draw his sword to parry the incoming strike.

Like a raging tempest, the sword in Simply's hand lashed out in a series of attacks nonstop, with each strike creating a loud, crisp sound of clashing metal.

Clink! The sword of the goblin snapped into two from the barrage. Unable to believe what had just happened, the goblin stood there unmoving and in but a flash, one of his arms was severed and was sent flying through the air.

[You have killed a Goblin]

"Arrgh!" cried the goblin, before Simply decapitated him and silenced him permanently.

"You…" the rest of the goblins nearby began retreating nonstop as if they had just seen a wraith.

Seeing Simply turn his attention to them only served to unnerve them even more.

Simply laughed and said, "Never challenge me on the Battlefield... If you want to live.!"

The sword in his hand whooshed as it arced through the fabric of space. At that moment, Simply felt extra energized and focused. He activated his dynamic vision, making his enemies looked like a horde of slow, stunted puppets. Simply danced with his sword into the sea of goblins and worgs…

Blades flashed all over with chunks of meat airborne as fountains of blood stained the whole battlefield. Amidst severed heads and limbs as well as broken weapons, Simply was akin to a dragon that had gotten into the middle of a herd of sheep. Chaos broke out wherever he went: everything could be summarized into a series of agonizing screams, swords clashing and surprised gasps. The enemies started to retreat.

The goblins all fleed from Simply, leaving him standing alone. Bathed all over with blood, his whole form was dyed dark red with about thirty seven or thirty eight corpses lying on the ground beside him, some of which were headless or had their limbs separated from their body.

The whole battlefield fell into complete silence with everyone looking at Simply, speechless at the gruesome sight. The goblins were all dumbfounded by that scene while the expedition's forces looked upon him with crazed fervor, admiration, and respect.

Wiping some blood off his face, Simply started laughing lightly.

"Those who dare oppose House Umbra, shall face its wrath. These shall henceforth be the words of my house."

The expedition forces roared in response.

"Kill!" shouted Yngol Forgefire. The rest quickly roared in response. They broke formation and rushed at the crestfallen enemies.

The battle was quickly wrapped up. A few managed to get away at which Simply responded with:

"We shouldn't kill them all. Always leave a few alive to tell the tale of our victory. If they come looking for us again... well... that's just sending chickens to the slaughterhouse. With a force like ours, they better bring a troll!"

He instructed the expedition's forces to loot the battlefield and catch their breath. He went back to the decapitated hobgoblin and looted its corpse. He gave a half-smile at the familiar loot.

The equipment that the captain wore was very similar to his last slain captain. Although it was not for a shield knight, it was for a swordsman. The armour consisted of a close-fitting leather jacket, a single piece of chainmail, and a pair of vambraces and leg greaves. Every metal piece of the set had also been tainted black, with the same matte finish. Paired with familiar brownish-red leather, it made the armour impressive to look at.
