11 – Test of the Sect Leader 2

I couldn’t help but harden my expression at the news that the Sect Leader was calling me.

…I could hardly think it would be for a positive reason.

‘Not only did I use the forces of the house without permission, but I also pushed the rapidly growing Church of Heaven to the brink.’

It was clear that he was calling me to question my responsibility for this.

I sighed lightly as I realized the extent of the repercussions of what I’d done.

‘So, what should I do?’

Ideally, it would end with a light punishment like near god.

But if that didn’t seem plausible, I would need to prepare in many ways.

As I was pondering what would be the most useful card I could play among those I could use,

“Then, shall we take our leave, sir?”

The steward politely led me.

Upon arrival at the Sect Leader’s office,

Before me, without a glance, was the sect leader engrossed in paperwork.

Listening to the scratchy sounds of his quill pen, I could measure how angry he was.

From noble mtl dot com

“You’ve caused quite the spectacle this time.”

The family head slowly put down his quill pen, casting his lot.

I was thinking about the best way to dodge what seemed like an impending scolding, but the family head surprised me with his words.

“You did well.”

“…?”

My mind would be filled with question marks if it felt like anything.

Befuddled as to why it wasn’t a scolding but a compliment, I deliberately made a puzzled expression.

Looking at my face, he responded tersely.

“You got first place. And with full marks in both theory and practical tests.”

Even as I was thinking that there were more important things than exam results, he continued in a calm voice.

“Do you want something? I’ll accommodate as much as possible.”

I couldn’t comprehend the situation. Instead of a reprimand, it felt like a reward was being offered.

Observing my silence, the family head locked eyes with me and spoke.

“…Do not forget that you are a person of Lerche.”

These words, indicating that all these things were forgiven because I am a part of Lerche, were definitely apart from conventional thinking.

During the jittery moment when I was pondering this, he picked up his quill pen and continued.

“If you are unable to maintain your status, you will indeed have to answer for the things you have been forgiven for being a person of Lerche.”

To avoid the responsibilities endowed upon me… or to be precise, to delay them as much as possible, I needed stronger power.

Nodding my head somewhat in agreement at his words, I couldn’t help but think,

‘As long as I can maintain my grades, it means I’m free to do as I please.’

While I had thus far contained majority of my actions due to social norms, hearing that I no longer needed to maintain the status quo, I felt liberated.

My spirits were oddly lifted, and all the while, the family head laconically continued,

“Then, I’ll look forward to next time too.”

Excitement, a feeling that I had not experienced in a long time, made my mood odd.

I responded to his words with an awkward smile, affirming, ‘Let it be so.’

After my confrontation with the family head, I headed to the guest room where Lumi was staying to check on my wounds.

But in the room, there were only maids cleaning.

Seeing this, I sighed, guessing that Lumi had gone home.

‘…She can’t bear to be a nuisance.’

Although being a nuisance would have been better, her constant attempts to escape were suffocating.

I know that these unalterable behaviors were ingrained by her adoptive parents, but I wanted desperately to stop her from spiraling down an abyss knowing the consequences in a novel of behaving as such.

I tried to contain my complicated thoughts and let out a sigh but then decided to stop thinking about Lumi for now.

‘… I have a guard, so nothing should happen.’

Even if something arises, I will be able to know immediately, so there won’t be a problem.

So, I looked at the new magic books I bought, thinking it’s time to focus on my personal growth.

‘Let’s start with research first.’

I finished all the basic magic research last time.

From now on, it would be beneficial to primarily learn about magics that can be used in battle.

In order to decide what kind of battle magic is best for me, I began ordering what I needed based on my last combat experience.

‘I clearly lacked long-range attack spells and spells that can handle variable situations, as well as immediate use spells for emergencies.’

Without magic that can take away the opponent’s magic, there was no magic that could create a variable.

Going through my many problems one by one, I sorted them in my mind and determined the magic to learn first.

‘Long-range attack magic.’

Deciding to study long-range attack magic first, which could supplement my lacking attack power and restrict opponents, I rolled up my sleeves.

‘At this rate, I wouldn’t die from fighting Lumi… but from overwork.’

Research is fun.

But missing sleep for days takes a toll, I thought as I stretched.

‘It’s a good thing my possessed body is young… if not, I’d probably have fainted.’

Honest, I feel faint right now. I looked around the classroom with weary eyes.

The classroom was emptily abandoned, with about half of the students gone.

I giggled at the realization that all the students that didn’t show up were on my end, as Lumi beside me handed me a note.

Curious, I checked it.

[I want to talk after this.]

Read the note.

I looked at her questioningly, and she met my gaze with a grim expression before quickly diverting her eyes as if she were about to cry.

Wondering if there was a problem, I swiftly checked my body but didn’t find any apparent injuries.

‘Is it safe to assume I am unhurt?’

Then what could be the problem? I decided to talk to her after the lecture to figure it out.

The moment the lecture ended, Lumi took me to the hallway and started talking to me with a hesitating expression.

“Stop, stop worrying about me.”

… What is she talking about?

“Why.”

At that question, Lumi dropped her head to the ground and mumble her words.

“I mean… I hate being with you. No, not really hate… umm…”

Because she was so all over the place, I honestly didn’t understand what she was trying to say.

But looking at Lumi’s tear-choked face, I roughly caught on to the situation.

‘She seems to push away because she feels she’s being a nuisance being around me.’

Since her childhood, her step-parents repeated destroying anything Lumi was interested in or liked.

As a result, Lumi tended to push away anything precious that came her way.

“Then I get into the habit of watching it from afar and being as happy as I can to myself.”

I had a strong tendency to push away when some affection or attraction developed.

At that very moment, I was contemplating what to do while looking at such Lumi.

“If you dislike my fiancé so much, could I take her away for a while?”

A calm yet purely innocent voice came from next to me.

I turned to the side at the unexpected word ‘fiancée’, and a fairly familiar figure caught my eye.

Blue eyes with sky-blue hair reaching down to the waist.

She had an unusual hair color that was hard to see on Earth, but it fitted remarkably well on this woman.

As she approached me, she wore an artifact that proved she was the student council president.

She greeted me with a face devoid of any emotion.

Her voice, settled, said hello to me.

“Daren, it’s been a long time.”

“……”

The novel proceeded from Lumi’s perspective and emphasized on it.

Though it didn’t detail Daren’s private matters, it portrayed his evil deeds in detail.

I didn’t even know he had a fiancée.

I was frowning at Daren, who even though had a fiancée, attempted to assault Lumi.

The student council president approached me and continued speaking.

“I wonder if you’ve been well.”

To me, who didn’t know the relationship between the student council president and Daren,

Trying to observe while concealing as much about myself as I could was the best possible course.

When I accepted her greeting and nodded, she arranged the sword hung around her waist and spoke.

“I’ve heard some unpleasant news recently. I just stopped by to check on you.”

The unpleasant news she was referring to was probably the event of the Sky God Sect.

I quickly realized that if I went into detail about this, it might embarrass Lumi, so I purposely kept my mouth shut.

The student council president cleverly diverted the subject and continued speaking to me.

“I originally intended to just take a peek and leave because I was busy, but, recalling that we hadn’t talked recently, I braced myself for the rudeness and visited.”

If you only listened to the way she spoke, it seemed like she was happy to see Daren after such a long time.

However, the actual atmosphere was more of a ‘I saw you talking with another woman while ignoring your fiancée and now I’m irritated’ kind of feeling.

Of course, I didn’t know about the relationship between Daren and the student council president to say for sure.

But I was certain that what she was saying and thinking were different.

So I wondered just how much I should pretend to accept when,

The student council president pointed towards the hallway and spoke to me.

“Then, would you accompany me as a fiancé, Daren?”
