Chapter 115: Lu Wei x Yan Shuyao: Adulthood (1)

Time flew by, and Lu Wei grew up.

In the summer of her eighteenth year, she was admitted to XX University and once again found herself studying alongside Yan Shuyao.

From middle school to university, she had always been Yan Shuyao's junior, constantly following in her footsteps, seemingly without a shred of her own opinion. She had thought about it but couldn't figure out why. She didn't have grand ambitions or firm life goals. Within her acceptable range, it didn't matter which university or major she chose.

So, weighing her options, she chose a place where Yan Shuyao was.

XX University was a prestigious institution, located in a coastal city in the south. It wasn't too far or too close to Jiangcheng, and its admission requirements were extremely high. Lu Wei always believed that without Yan Shuyao's guidance over the years, she wouldn't have studied so diligently and wouldn't have reached that score threshold. Her choices would have been limited.

Following Yan Shuyao  made her feel happy. She didn't have to worry about making a living or fret about the future. She could simply do things that brought her joy.

University life was more exciting than she had imagined. Upon arriving in the new environment, free from the nagging of her mothers, she felt like a spirited wild horse, frolicking freely. She was a little scared during the first few days of school, but with Yan Shuyao by her side, she quickly adapted.

Yan Shuyao  was in her sophomore year, studying business management. With her stunning looks and wealth, she mingled well among the students and had a great reputation. Wherever she went, she had "friends."

But she didn't care about all that.

She attended classes diligently every day and spent her free time taking Lu Wei out to play. Over time, Lu Wei grew particularly attached to her. Whenever they both had free time, they stuck together like conjoined twins.

After the two-week military training ended, various clubs began recruiting new members. Lu Wei joined seven or eight associations all at once, including the Student Union. She participated for a while, expecting it to be fun, but was disappointed and eventually quit. She pulled Yan Shuyao aside and vented her frustrations.

"Why does the Student Union feel like a cult to me? The chairpersons and leaders all have such big egos, and everything seems so fake. People talk as if they're acting on stage. They blow things out of proportion for even the smallest matter. It's truly speechless."

The young girl pouted and murmured, her face turning slightly red with anger. She always spoke softly and gently, even when expressing her grievances, it sounded more like she was acting spoiled, making her incredibly adorable.

Her hair was tied up in a bun, and she wore a light yellow dress that Yan Shuyao had given her. She had a slender and slim figure, and because she was slightly shorter, when walking with Yan Shuyao, she had a somewhat dependent and clingy demeanor, like a little bird.

In reality, Yan Shuyao was just too tall.

She was 174 centimeters tall.

After entering high school, Lu Wei's height didn't grow much. On her birthday as an adult, she measured her height and it was 165 centimeters, which was considered normal, but compared to Yan Shuyao, she appeared shorter.

In late autumn, the weather remained warm.

Yan Shuyao listened quietly, her gaze falling on Lu Wei's rosy face. A smile involuntarily formed at the corner of her mouth, and after a moment, she said, "It's good that you stopped in time. Most of those places are just a gathering of mediocre and narrow-minded people. Don't take them too seriously. What's important is that you're happy."

"Yeah," Lu Wei lifted her chin and leaned her head on Yan Shuyao's shoulder. "I think those clubs are all boring. I quit all of them and only stayed in the piano association. Being with Sister Yaoyao is the most enjoyable."

"Really?"

Yan Shuyao paused for a moment, then continued walking.

"Of course, Sister Yaoyao is my favorite~" she said, her mouth coated with sweetness.

Little fool.

Yan Shuyao smiled, her thick lashes lowering down, her eyes a deep ocean of swirling whirlpools. Her fingers quietly reached into Lu Wei's palm, intertwining with hers. "What do you want to eat tonight? Shall we cook at home or go out?"

They had rented a whole house near the school, occasionally staying there. They cooked their own meals, and Yan Shuyao had a driver's license and a car, so they often went out for drives and to find food.

Lu Wei pondered for a moment, about to speak, when her phone vibrated.

A WeChat message from a senior.

[I've got the sheet music. Do you have time now? I can bring it over.]

"Let's grab a meal together too."

"Ah!" Lu Wei screamed, staring at the screen as she jumped up. "He said he wants to have a meal with me!"

"Who?"

Lu Wei looked up at Yan Shuyao, suddenly remembering that she was unaware of the situation. She blinked her eyes and smiled, saying, "He's a senior from our association, a piano performance major in the School of Arts. He's incredibly handsome! His skills are amazing, and his voice is so nice~"

Yan Shuyao's face slightly stiffened, her smile freezing in her eyes.

"Sister Yaoyao, should I be a bit reserved? But I really want to go a little..."

Her thoughts were clearly displayed on her face. She was like a bud ready to bloom, bathed in the spring breeze, youthful, shy, radiating a glow from head to toe.

"Then go," Yan Shuyao softly interrupted, gently releasing her hand and turning to walk towards the parking lot.

Lu Wei stood there in a daze, taking a moment to react, and hurriedly caught up with her. "Sister Yaoyao—" She grabbed her hand. "Are you angry?"

Yan Shuyao pursed her lips and remained silent.

"Then…then, I won't have dinner with him. Let's go back..." Seeing her unhappy expression, Lu Wei's first instinct was to soothe her, without delving deeper into the matter.

She couldn't pinpoint when it started, but she had become particularly attentive to Yan Shuyao's words. Many things that her mothers and other family members nagged about a hundred times had no effect, but a single look from Yan Shuyao made her obedient. She couldn't explain why, perhaps it was because she cared about Yan Shuyao's emotions, or maybe it was simply a habit of being tolerant towards all female friends.

She carefully held Yan Shuyao's hand, and the latter halted her steps.

"Sister Yaoyao?"

"You're always like this." Yan Shuyao furrowed her brows, her tightly pursed lips trembling slightly. "You never consider your own thoughts."

Two girls holding hands passed by at a fork in the road. They seemed intimate, and one of them glanced around before suddenly pinching the other person's face.

"Ah?"

Yan Shuyao turned her head and saw the bewildered expression on the little silly girl's face. She couldn't help but find it funny and helpless at the same time. With a sigh, she said, "Do whatever you want to do without considering my mood. I'm not angry, you idiot." As she spoke, she raised her hand and pinched the girl's face.

Not angry, just disappointed.

Over the years, she had watched many works about same-sex relationships with Lu Wei. The little silly girl didn't reject them and even seemed to enjoy them a bit. She had come to believe that sexual orientation could be changed. However, when she saw the shy and excited look on Lu Wei's face when she mentioned the senior, she suddenly realized that she was wrong.

The little fool is straight, someone she shouldn't get involved with.

As for herself...

She used to have crushes on boys, but at some point, handsome guys disappeared from her eyes. Back then, she was young, her thoughts consumed by eating, drinking, and studying. Coupled with her disdain for the unsophisticated peers around her, she never developed any affection for anyone.

She and Lu Wei were more like sisters.

After entering university, many of her thoughts had changed. Things she didn't understand before gradually became clear. It wasn't until Lu Wei followed her that a seed hidden deep within her heart quietly sprouted...

"But I feel that you are more important." Lu Wei murmured.

So she cared about Yan Shuyao's feelings, worried about her emotions, and watched her reactions. She didn't say the last few sentences.

A subtle feeling swept through her heart, like the wind. Before she could capture it, it disappeared completely, as if it had never existed.

Yan Shuyao snapped back to reality, her heartbeat seeming to pause for half a second. "Why?"

"Because..."

Lu Wei pursed her lips, lowered her head, and tried hard to think of something. After a while, she spoke softly, "Do you remember in middle school when we got into a fight with someone and the principal almost punished us..." She lifted her head, and her watery black eyes sparkled. "At that time, you protected me, and I considered you an important person."

They had done a lot of childish and somewhat ridiculous things when they were young. Looking back now, it was inevitably laughable.

Yan Shuyao suddenly felt a jolt, her whole body tingling. But then she remembered that Lu Wei was straight, and she couldn't provoke her no matter what. Her heart turned into ashes once again.

She smiled, hiding the bitterness in her eyes, and ruffled Lu Wei's head like she used to when they were children. In a gentle tone, she said, "Got it, little fool. Since the senior invited you, go ahead. But remember to go dutch for the meal, don't let the guy pay for you. Don't go to secluded places with him, and keep an eye on your drink or water, never let it leave your sight..."

Yan Shuyao sounded like a nagging mother, going on and on about many things.

If it were her mothers, Lu Wei would have rolled her eyes long ago and let everything go in one ear and out the other. But Sister Yaoyao was different. Whatever she said, Lu Wei listened, willingly and obediently.

"Oh, and some guys like to put on a show, acting all impressive to deceive naive girls. For example, they might claim to be in a certain profession. If he's truly talented, he wouldn't be studying performing arts at a comprehensive university but would have gone directly to a music conservatory. So, you don't need to idolize him too much. You're talented yourself; you've just chosen a different path. Be confident, okay?"

"Okay."

Yan Shuyao pinched her face again. "Call me after you finish eating. I'll come pick you up. Don't stay out too late, alright?"

"Okay."

Lu Wei had always believed that she liked boys.

The senior was handsome, with a soothing voice and a gentle personality. They had common interests in piano, and they became familiar with each other quickly. She thought that was what liking someone felt like. But when the senior confessed to her, she inexplicably felt resistance and lost the initial freshness of their acquaintance.

Many boys pursued her.

Good-looking ones, talented ones, well-off ones... She thought they were all nice, and she could get along well with each of them. But she couldn't find that spark of attraction.

In the end, she rejected them all.

Something must be wrong. Lu Wei wondered. And it must be her own problem.

Troubled for a long time, she wanted to confide in someone. Yan Shuyao was the first person who came to mind, but after careful consideration, she instinctively felt that it would make her unhappy to hear all this, so she dismissed the idea. Finally, she chose to indirectly ask her roommate.

"If you like someone, you'll think about sleeping with them. First, your face turns red, your heart races, then desire surges, and finally..."

"Come on, you solo creature. Where did you read that from, some romance novel?"

The roommates started joking and playing around while talking.

Lu Wei felt completely indifferent as she listened.

Desire?

She didn't seem to have it.

No blushing or racing heart either.

"What if I don't have those feelings? For several different types of guys." She asked earnestly.

The conversation had already shifted to other topics, and her sudden question left them silent for a few seconds, as if they were pondering. Then, someone spoke in a matter-of-fact tone, "Maybe you like girls!"

The dorm room fell silent once again.

Lu Wei was taken aback, and Yan Shuyao's face appeared in her mind...
