Time Traveling Hero

Chapter 6 - Unnamed Boy Meets The Depra King

After breakfast, me and Eris said our goodbye to our Luna, and ended up walking to school together. It was rather strange, not having to run for fear of being late.

Eris seemed particularly happy about our current situation, humming along happily as she walked next to me, her hands behind her back as she carried a satchel. The satchel was also happily bouncing along with her humming, as if it had a life of its own.

I myself just had a normal backpack, and was not too happy. The events of the past day or so kept on protruding my normally calm thoughts, and I couldn't help but be slightly nervous.

Noticing my anxiety, Eris wrapped an arm around me before putting me in a headlock. "What's bothering you lil' bro? You're too young to be worried about life. Worry about it when you have bills to pay at least, like the rest of us."

I miraculously managed to get free before glaring at her carefree face. "You really are damn annoying, you know that? Your idiosyncratic nature toward me is attracting attention, so stop it."

It was true. People kept on giving us strange looks as we passed by. It wasn't often you saw a 25 year old woman mess with a teenager after all. Oh, guess I should say my age now, huh? I'm currently 15 at this point in the story.

"There you go again, using words no one knows. You should come down to our level some time," she noted before pushing my head down, trying to get me down to what she would call 'normal people level'.

Ugh. She's always been like this, even when I first met her. But, for some reason it had gotten worse since I started high school.

"In a way, you're just so damn needy." I muttered as I brushed off my dark brown fuzzy hair, which was slowly making it's way into becoming an Afro.

She clutched her c.h.e.s.t in shock, her over-exaggeration obvious. "I'm hurt that you would say such a thing! I just love you so much, I can't help but doting on my helpless lil' bro!"

She wrapped her arm around me once more before rubbing her frosty white face against my own dark brown face.

"Ugh, seriously! I love you too, but stop it! It's unbecoming of a teacher to do this to a student you know!" I could feel myself getting more fl.u.s.tered by the second.

She let go with a "Fine," before leaving me alone. I sighed in relief. She really was troublesome, that sister of mine.

We continued our walk in silence for a while before reaching the store from the first loop. It was then that she spoke again.

"Hey, so about that request I was telling you about last night," She started, her green eyes looking at me inquisitively.

"Yeah, what about it?"

"There's a student I want you to meet. I believe he's in all your classes if I'm not mistaken. Shy guy, looks heavily depressed, you know the type."

I couldn't think of any such dude in my classes. Then again, it's not like I talk to anybody in my classes.

"Anyway, he had an incident at the beginning of his freshman year. Due to his circ.u.mstances, his friend asked to be placed in all of his classes for the time being, and the school accepted. This year however he doesn't get that treatment, so, being the meddler that I am, I decided to help him! He's also like you in that way," she continued, that mischievous smile appearing her face. "I think you get at what I'm trying to say."

Oh yeah, I do remember something like that happening. A freak incident where a guy's entire family just disappeared off the face of the planet. Every family member that knew him, gone. It was a part of those strange instances I had mentioned, with that one being one of the weirdest.

We had arrived at school while Eris had been busy explaining herself to me. We had block scheduling at my high school, and today was a even day. I was unluckily in my big sister's AP psychology class first thing in the morning, so we made our way their together.

"Anyway, I want you to introduce yourself to him. He could probably use someone like you in your life, and you could think of this as gaining you first friend!"

We had arrived at her class, on the second floor. We stopped by the door, watching as students walked in.

"I really don't want to though. Seems like it'll be a pain in my a.s.s, dealing with a guy like that."

"I'm making it a grade for you," she responded cheekily.

Damn her, I thought as I clicked my tongue in annoyance. "You really shouldn't abuse your power as a teacher like that."

"Uh huh, like you abuse yours?"

She got me with that statement. I sighed before looking in the classroom. "So, who is this guy anyway?"

She pointed at the seat next to my seat, which was by the window. "It's him, right there."

The person she was pointing at was wearing sweatpants and a sweatshirt. He had his hood cover his face as he laid it down on the desk, probably trying to sleep.

I looked at my big sis, who nodded encouragingly. I took a deep breath and exhaled before making my way toward the boy.

I walked over to the side of his desk, the side with my desk on it, before speaking.

"Hey you," I called out to the boy. He made no movements indicating that he heard me.

"Oye! You, the one with the hood covering his head! Ugh, screw this." I ripped off his hood and was met with a shocked face, his brown eyes looking at me with sadness.

"Who are you?" he asked, clearly confused by my behavior.

"My name doesn't matter, what's important is, are you going to keep moping around day in and day out!?" I got the entire class's attention with that outburst, but I could care less.

He looked away from me, his face filling with shame. "So that's your answer? Seriously, why the hell do I always have to do all the damn work!"

I grabbed his shirt in anger, forcing his face to look at mine. "If you keep acting like this, you're only going to make it harder for me to become your friend damn it! I need that 100!"

His face changed to one mixed with shock, confusion, and wonder. "100...?" he asked slowly, his voice riddled with sadness.

"Ignore that last part. So, are you going to be my friend or not," I asked before stating my nickname for him, something that came out of the blue. I'm not sure why it came to me at that moment, but looking at his clearly depressed face sparked my creativity.

"The Depra King!?"

After school was over, and my daily job complete, I walked outside to see a familiar face waiting for me.

His face lit up as he saw me approach him. "Hey there! I've been waiting!"

The Depra King, or Depra for convenience, was standing by the gate of the school. For once, his face had a smile on it, probably due to my prior proclamation.

I scratched the side of my face at this predicament. "Why did you wait for me?"

"Oh, was I not meant to? I was hoping we could hang out..." he stammered off, his face full of disappointment.

"No, that's fine with me, I was just wondering why when we hadn't made any prior engagements."

He sighed a breath of relief. "That's good to hear. I wanted to go to a nearby cafe, if that's alright with you."

I nodded in agreement. "Lead the way, Depra King."

And so we made our way to a nearby cafe, about a 10 minute walk from the school. We sat down at an empty booth before picking up our menu's.

"I've never been here before, but my friend had always wanted to go. I decided to try it out before coming here with her." He commented before diving his head in the menu, trying to figure out what to order.

Ah, he must be talking about that friend, I thought to myself. The friend who was worried about him after his incident. Still, it was rather strange. For a guy who also didn't talk to anybody at school, and distraught about his situation, he was surprisingly friendly and well put together. It was as if...

I watched as he struggled to choose what he wanted, and set my menu down, already knowing what I wanted.

"Hey, can you answer something for me?"

His face, hidden by the menu, peaked out from the top. "Yeah, I guess. I did want to come here so we could get to know each other better after all."

I nodded before trying to find the right words to my question. "I guess, what I'm trying to ask is, is this your true self, or are you trying too hard to hide your pain?"

His menu clattered down onto the table as he looked at me, his face filled with shock before turning to bitter sadness. "You saw right through it, huh?"

"I can normally tell these things easily. After all, you're not the only one who tries to hide their feelings," I said, turning my head toward the window. "You don't have to try so hard you know. I could care less how you act, just be yourself is all I ask."

Depra clenched his fists tightly. "I just wanted to make a good first impression is all," he said, his eyes turning downcast.

I scoffed at his statement. "Please, do you call what I did a good first impression?"

A small smile, a genuine one, appeared on his sad face. "Yeah, I guess you're right about that."

I took a deep breath and sighed before turning back toward him. "Now that's out of the way, let's order our food."

"Hmm," he agreed, picking up his menu. I ordered chocolate cake with hot chocolate, while Depra ordered strawberry shortcake with a caramel latte.

We ate in silence for a bit, before Depra spoke up. "So, are you like me in that regard?"

"I'll let you be judge of that," I said, not really answering the question.

"I see... It seemed to me that Mrs. Cardea may have been telling the truth then. Well, I hope we can become great friends!"

I couldn't help but smile. "Yeah, so long as you keep being yourself, we won't have any problems."

"Well, what about me?" said a new voice, with it came a hint of anger.

I looked over and saw a girl standing by our booth. She was breathing hard, and actually wasn't that bad on the eyes. Her blue eyes flared with anger as her blonde hair was becoming loose from the ponytail it was in.

Depra looked shocked as he looked at the girl. "La-Lachesis!? What are you doing here?"

"I should be asking you that! I thought something was up when you didn't want to walk home with me, but to think that this would be what you were doing!"

Lachesis grabbed Depra's arm and slid into the booth with us, getting cozy with him. "Listen, If you think you can easily steal him away from me, your surely mistaken!"

I took a sip of my hot chocolate. "You can keep him, he's just a friend."

She squinted her eyes at me, a look of obvious distrust in on her face. "Hmph, whatever you say."

"Lachesis, I would appreciate it if you would stop."

"Nope, because then you would just go off with this bastard!"

Hey now, I take great offense to that. And why is that I feel as if I've seen this exact scene so many times? I got shivers trying to figure it out.

I finished the last of my cake and hot chocolate before slinging my bag on my back. "Well, I'll be going now." I got up from the booth and made my way to the door.

"Hey! Hold up just a second!"

Ignoring Depra's cry's, I made my way outside before stopping to gaze at the setting sun over the hilltops.

"Hey! Wait a second!"

I turned away from the sunset to see Depra, who had somehow managed to get away from his friend. "Yeah, what's up?"

He took a deep breath before scratching his unkempt black hair. "Well, I never got your phone number you know?"

"Seriously? Alright then, let's hurry it up then."

He grinned at me, his happiness almost palpable. We exchanged phone numbers, and I had started to make my way back home before I heard him shout out one last thing.

"Thank you! For today, and for a whole bunch more like 'em!"

I scratched my head, a little bit embarrassed by his sudden outburst. Feeling strangely motivated, I turned back to see him.

"Yep! Hope there's many more to come!" I yelled out in response, a big grin on my face.

And so, that's how the Unnamed Boy met the Depra King, as their friendship bloomed on that fateful day.

The Depra's King's story is for another story dear reader, but slowly but surely, the Unnamed Boy's life was changing, bit by bit.
