Chapter 2: The Letter

St George’s was a church school. It had low tuition fees and student loans were available, but students had to find their own jobs after graduation.

Thulhu had learned his lesson from his last life. Thus, he had started preparing a long time ago, and the resume he sent out had attracted the attention of a lab.

Chewing the sandwich, Thulhu opened the letter.

To his surprise, there were in fact two letters. One was thick, and from Thulhu’s hometown.

Thulhu decided to open the thin letter first. When he saw the first line of the letter, he grinned.

“Mr. Botley, we’re pleased to inform you…”

“Wow, is this from the lab in Green Tree Fort? Congrats!”

Shawn took a glance at the letter and instantly jumped up.

“Thanks!” Thulhu had a big smile on his face. He didn’t feel bad about using the experience from his last life in this world at all, which could be regarded as a form of cheating.

In White Eagle Union, there were several occupations that worked best as stepping stones to success if you wanted to become part of the upper class, like doctors, lawyers, and scientists…

What about becoming a civil servant and working for the government? Forget it. Except for judges and a few other jobs, most civil servants enjoyed even worse reputations than clerics.

Green Tree Fort Lab was quite famous in the union. Becoming a research assistant in the lab was Thulhu’s first solid step toward the upper class. In the future, he would be able to earn at least two gold dragons every week. He would then slowly release the knowledge he had from his last life over the next few years and draw more and more attention. His value would increase, and then he might become a CEO or something, and marry a beautiful, rich girl and reach the peak of his life. All this gave Thulhu a slight thrill.

Shawn kept nagging like an old aunty beside him. “If Beatrice finds out, she’d definitely be full of regrets…”

“Can you skip it?”

Thulhu didn’t look too happy.

As an energetic young man, Thulhu had naturally tried to pursue love several times, and Beatrice had been one of his targets.

But… Every time Thulhu thought about it, one side of his face would start burning again.

Thulhu glared at Shawn until the latter walked away. He then opened the second envelope, which was from his hometown.

Whatever happened, he knew that he would have to face his family members sooner or later.

Like the saying went, the situation was already so bad that it made no real difference if it was made worse. Thulhu opened the letter. He noticed that the envelope was quite thick, and the papers inside looked quite exquisite. The fine wax seal on the back made the letter look more like an antique piece.

He slowly opened the envelope and poured out its content: There was a folded page torn from a book, and a letter.

The letter said:

To my beloved little brother,

The long night will finally end. No matter where you hide, you can never hide from your fate, our family’s fate. Yes, here, I feel greatly honored to inform you that Twilight of the Gods has come to an end, and a new round of extraordinary competition has started. Our family needs your power! Claws in the darkness are stretching out into this world. Proceed with great caution!

Attached is a page from a book of magic. I won it in a fight. Help me keep it for now. Also, it’d be great if you could read it for me. You know I’ve never been good at reading these ancient characters.

I’ll be visiting you in Niah shortly, as I have much to say to you in person.

Your sincere brother,

Roald Botley

“???”

Thulhu looked up from the letter, totally clueless. What did those words mean? Extraordinary? Twilight of the Gods? He thought this place was an alternate world which also followed science!

No! Thulhu had already accepted his fate. Why did the jokes keep coming one after another?

“Alright, if everything’s true, at least I don’t have to change my surname to Potter…” Thulhu murmured.

Full of complaints, Thulhu felt that it might be better to just knock into a tree and kill himself that way.

When he first came here, he did consider committing suicide.

After all, this was a brand-new, less-advanced world which he knew nothing about.

He missed the world he originally belonged to. That world was so convenient, safe and entertaining. He had cried a lot late at night.

Perhaps… This was just a dream. Once he died, he’d be able to go back!

The idea kept coming back to him. But Thulhu was afraid of pain. And if he still couldn’t go back after he killed himself, his suicide would turn out to have been a rather ridiculous idea. Thus, he finally decided that he would experience this new world and treat this life as a second one.

Death was inevitable. Sooner or later, Thulhu would die again, but different from most people, he was kind of looking forward to it.

But now, this letter from home had ruined everything!

Thulhu had a plan, a very good one, in which he would become rich and have a happy family. However, this western world had turned out to be a magical one!

Was this a joke?

He looked like a big fool!

Thulhu was pissed. He picked up the letter, prepared to tear it into pieces.

Maybe it was just a bad joke!

Although Thulhu had read lots of novels in his last life, his outlook on the world was quite solid and not that easily broken.

Thulhu murmured to himself and unfolded the torn-off page.

It was a piece of parchment, and after Thulhu unfolded it, the page was as big as half the size of a common table. Obviously, the book it was originally from was a big one.

Written on it were a lot of characters and a magic pentagram circle. Lots of notes had been added in the blank space.

This wasn’t the union’s character system, but… the ancient Heber alphabet!

Thulhu murmured in a low voice.

Heber was the common tongue in today’s union. It came from the Chris Empire, which had once had a lot of colonies, and was called the Rising Sun. However, ancient Heber was only used several thousand years ago. Rarely did people study the language, except for some of the old fogeys in the history department.

But Thulhu understood the strange characters! He had learned it as a child!

Thulhu’s breathing became heavy. Suddenly, a sharp pain pierced his head, and memories overwhelmed him.

In an old classroom, a serious-looking middle-aged man stood in front of an old blackboard. “Remember, ancient Heber is the common tongue of the extraordinary world, and is a mystery in itself. Ancient Heber has mysterious powers and is required in many rites…”

Then, the scene changed to a building that was on fire.

“I’ll never forgive you… Never!”

A boy who resembled Thulhu was crying. Then, the boy ran away without looking back.

Um…

Thulhu rubbed his eyebrows, digesting the memories that had just popped out. It seemed that Thulhu Botley actually came from an extraordinary family, but he once had a big fight with them and then chose to come to this university. It also seemed that Thulhu himself disliked these mysterious things very much, so he was devoted to science.

Thulhu gently stroked the book page and wondered what kind of world this place truly was.

Thulhu realized that his understanding of this world was still very shallow, but a new door had opened for him.

“Black… witchcraft… to produce… dead woman… NO! Should be Corpse Princess!”

Thulhu tried to read the characters using the knowledge he recalled from his memories. He was shocked by the title: Black Witchcraft – Corpse Princess.

It looked very evil to Thulhu.

At that moment, Thulhu saw a cluster of bright lights in front of his eyes, which then unfolded into a light screen.
