Chapter 27 - To the Middle Square

Although they were using the alleys and were running along the tricky areas that people would not normally choose to be in, they were unable to get all the way over to the middle square without being seen by anyone.

When they passed over a block of houses, the two of them encountered a group of people who were coincidentally, also jumping over someone's backyard wall.

They were dressed in black and white with bits of silver accenting their sleeves and collars. They didn't utter a single word as they attacked Harvet immediately on sight. Her attempt at wearing Guild colors backfired with this group from the Association.

Luckily, Harvet was quick on her feet, and managed to twist out of the way just as a stream of flames jet past her head. The flames licked up a tree and trickled over the dead grass, promptly lighting it and it's immediate surroundings on fire. Harvet clicked her tongue and didn't waste any time as she dashed over to the nearest person, it was a woman who had gone a little to far out.

The woman from the Association was away from her teammates and the perfect target for Harvet to attack. Uteu, not wanting to let Harvet fight alone, let the stream of red physical energy wrap around his right arm and both of his legs before he too, dashed to back her up.

Uteu from behind, kicked out the woman's feet from under her. The spell she was preparing skewed and hit upwards at a house instead of at Harvet. Harvet was quick to chop at the side of her neck, knocking the woman out cold.

They let the body drop to the floor and were quick to evade another stream of flames headed their way. Without a target to hit, the flames were quick to disperse in the open air. A man with dreadlocks cursed when he didn't hit either of them.

The man was preparing another spell, Harvet didn't let him finish it as she brutally kicked him in the t.h.i.g.h. She then grabbed and twisted his right arm, dislocating it. As the man screamed in pain and tried to scramble away, Harvet chopped the back of his neck and promptly knocked him out as well.

Uteu on the other hand was trying to reach the woman that was directly behind the man with the dreadlocks. She had used her own teammate as a shield to keep herself out of view. She had been preparing a bigger spell, and succeeded since she was unnoticed for just long enough to finish it.

A tall wall of flames encircled them burning away at the dead grass by their feet. It cut them off from the remaining members of the group. Uteu nearly ran into the wall of flames, he had just barely managed to stop himself in the nick of time.

He was just a mere foot away from the woman, he was so close to her but the towering flames prevented him from getting any closer.

Harvet, however wasn't deterred by the flames in the least. She used his back to leap right over the wall of flames. He heard a shriek and then a thud as a body dropped to the floor. Then he heard an angry shout and worried someone else was attacking Harvet.

Not wanting to be trapped here any longer, Uteu dug into the ground and threw dirt onto the root of the flames, just enough to extinguish a small portion of the wall, enough for him to get through unscathed.

Rushing out, he was just in time to shove a man out of the way from landing a stomp down on Harvet who was on the ground. Harvet recovered by tumbling forward and punched the man in the chin, hard. The man shook his head trying to clear it. He stumbled to the side, and then he was falling. He was unable to control his movements as he hit the floor. He looked stunned.

A man swung a flaming torch in Uteu's direction. He was able to dodge but was caught off guard as another man grabbed him from behind. His arms were locked behind him and he could feel them burn in the man's grasp. Gritting his teeth, he pushed off the ground with his feet. He used the man's hold against him as he kicked backwards into the man's legs.

He heard a snap and a holler of pain. He could already feel Grello's heal ability working on him as he and Harvet rounded a kick at the man with the torch. Turning back to the man who's leg he had just broken, Harvet was quick to drop a kick down on him, successfully knocking out the last of member of the group.

Uteu let out a quick sigh of relief. Although the battle took a few short minutes, it felt incredibly long.

He motioned at Harvet and she led him out of the backyard area. With all of the flames, the air was becoming difficult to breathe. The flames were also spreading rapidly, it would just be safer to leave.

As he ran with Harvet to a safer location, for just a moment, he worried for the people on the floor, knocked unconscious. Remembering how they attacked first and injured the both of them, he threw the thought out of his mind. Most of them had a fire ability, surly they'd be fine.

Now at a different block, they were able to check their wounds. Harvet had another mild bruise forming right under her c.h.e.s.t, luckily nothing was broken. Uteu on the other hand still had burn marks on the back of his arms. They were healing rapidly but Harvet still threw some ointment on them.

"Damn... how unlucky. No idea what those guys were even doing over here." Harvet took in a few breaths, she was a bit winded and was trying to regulate her breathing.

"We're not far now. Another two blocks and we'll arrive at the middle of this town." Her breathing, now under control, Harvet quirked an eyebrow at him as if asking if he was alright to continue.

No longer feeling much pain from his burns, Uteu nodded towards Harvet. He didn't exactly feel ready, but he wasn't ready for any of this from the start.

He took a quick glance back at the burning buildings a block away from them. The smoke was black and the flames were already l.i.c.k.i.n.g up the roof tops of some of the homes. He then turned back around and ran alongside Harvet. They didn't take the alleys this time, opting to head straight for their goal. The fire would alert anyone and everyone nearby, there was no point in trying to hide now.
