Under The Full Moon

Chapter 56 - The treetop

Not long after the confession; the long-awaited opportunity presented itself. We were contacted to rob a wealthy trader. The client provided us with all the needed information and description of the compound including where we are to enter and exit from; the robbery was to take place five nights from that day. Two nights to proposed night, I went to the village, entered the compound through our planned entrance, headed straight to the master hut and met the trader sleeping peacefully with one of his wives. I went over to the bed head and covered his mouth before he could wake up and shout.

There I informed him that a gang of robbers is coming to rob him two nights from that night. They would enter the compound the same way I did; he should be prepared and wait for them. He should make sure none of them makes it out alive for if any escapes; they would return with a higher number and be more ruthless. I reminded him how easy it was for just me; then he should imagine how it would be for a gang of armed robbers. I left him that night too shocked and scared to neither move nor talk.

The appointed day came and we all went to rob the compound as planned. I was positioned at the entrance to lookout for incoming persons while the rest went in through the proposed entrance. As soon as they were all in, I abandoned the mission and took to my heels. They all perished; justice was served; they deserved it" he said with the smile still lingering in his lips.

"What did you do to your uncle?" Okemmiri asked.

"After their death, I returned to the forest and began consuming our loots, those I could not eat I sold, and with the money, I bought more food. I was enjoying my lonely life. Some market weeks after; I decided to pay my family a visit. On getting to my village, I stayed out of sight watching my uncle enjoy my father's wealth with my stepmother by his side. Seeing them, I was filled with rage and fury; how could they be that happy after basically ending my own life. Right there, I made a plan to assassinate them. The plan was a very simple one – get in there while they sleep and machete them both to pieces.

Finally, it was midnight; I came down from the treetop where I have been observing them from. Slowly from the backyard, I made my way to their bedroom, slowly opened the door, and met my stepmother asleep. I just stood there with my machete raised, for some strange reason I couldn't strike her. Suddenly she woke up and on sighting me screamed; from nowhere her husband appeared at the entrance shouting "What is it!" I wasted no time in striking him, I can't remember where the machete met him, I didn't care, and he deserved it and even more. My stepmother intensified her scream, people starting trooping in. I knew it was certainly time to vacate the place.

On my way out running, I collided with the first son of my uncle and fell. He grabbed me while on the floor, we began fighting; I made sure I gave him the beating of his life. He recognized me and began screaming my name as he pointed the men in my direction. They viciously chased after me for days without giving up till I lost them in the evil forest after climbing a treetop from which I saw Ego the next morning".

After a deep breath, Okemmiri admitted, "There is nothing the ears will hear that will make it bleed". The people echoed "Yes oh!!! He turned to Ndubisi "So you saw Ego from the treetop, continue what happened next?" he asked.
