Chapter 14 - The Physical Pain is No Match to the Pain in My Heart

"No! Please! Listen, my lord. He's just nothing." I wiped away my tears while chasing Lancelot as he approached the foot of the cross. "He's not worth the time! Don't kill him!"

Lancelot suddenly turned and slapped me across the face. It was so hard that I dropped to the dirt with the hit before a ringing resounded in my ear.

"No!" Ivano yelled when he saw me fell down while struggling against his binds.

"You're only saying this to spare this man his life!" Lancelot snarled menacingly down at me. "But I'm not your father that you can trick, Katherine! I will kill him! It's then I'll know he's really not worth your time to be bothered by his death!"

"Please, please." I clasped my hands together and knelt in front of the high priest. "I beg you, dont kill him!"

"I knew it!" Lancelot gripped his sword tighter that his knuckles turned white. "You love him, Katherine?"

I I glanced at Ivano and almost cried but I refused to let my emotions be known or he'd die. "What are you talking about, my lord." I smiled up at Lancelot, albeit with difficulty, before sneering towards Ivano. "What do you think I'll find in that pitiful man to fall in love with?"

"Stop smiling at me, Katherine!" Ivano suddenly barked from the cross. "Don't use your smiles while you lie with your tongue!"

"Stop blabbering up there, you, idiot!" I snapped at him. "You've done enough mess with my life! I don't want my marriage to the high priest be ruined because of your ridiculous imaginings that we're in love with each other! You're nothing but a toy to me!"

"Stop lying, Katherine!" Ivano repeated as he started to sob. "Stop using your smile that I loved so much! Stop lying! Stop! Stop!"

"Shut up!" Lancelot barked. "Bring him down!"

The guards obeyed the high priest's command and brought Ivano's body down the cross. I started to sob. It's useless now to deny my tears. It's no use to act unmoved when the love of my life would be killed. I wailed out at the sight of Ivano's limped body this close when he was finally removed from the cross.

It was so horrible. The wounds weren't just cuts. They're deep that his skin opened in such a way that his flesh hung out. His organ was tightly wrapped with thick cords. His knee was broken, too.

"What did they do to you?" I stood and whimpered as I touched Ivano's face.

"The physical pain they inflicted on me was no match to the pain you caused my heart, my love."

"I'm sorry!" My shoulders rocked as I cried my silent tears.

"Enough!" Lancelot jerked me away from Ivano and threw me to the side.

He reared back before aiming his blade towards Ivano's heart. I cried out in fright and lunged forward. The blade caught me straight to my heart that I gasped with the agonizing pain. But I smiled instead before looking up to Ivano over my shoulder. I saved him! I saved my love from death.

I stared at Ivano's face but I whimpered when he suddenly coughed out blood. My body started to sag as life began to ooze out of me. But I was able to slide my eyes down Ivano's body. The blade that pierced me went out of my back and impaled Ivano's heart as well.

"Noooooo!"
