What A Dream Wants

Chapter 14 - Steven Sleeps Through History Class

After a few mountains, the earth was almost flat. Breakfast was over, and as a result, Steven had to head to his homeroom class.

Room 208.

Steven walked in, noticing that some of them had yet to settle down. He sat down, wondering what this homeroom teacher even taught. Would she teach an interesting elective or drone about something boring like history? He hoped this morning wouldn't be ruined by a boring lecture about history.

Slowly his classmates poured in.

"Alright class, settle down!" Ms. Happi said, walking in. She hoped they didn't notice she used the most cliche phrase two days in a row. She used it often because it would gather the attention of students magically when presented in popular media. For some reason, it didn't work as well in real life as it did in the movies.

She was wrong. They did notice.

She coughed and decided to take attendance.

But before she could do so, some stragglers walked in late.

"I'm so sorry! I got lost on the campus." One of them told her.

"Yeah me too."

"Me three."

"I didn't hear the bell, and I forgot to check the time!" Another one said.

"Yeah me too."

"Me three."

"Alright! Since it's your second day, I won't mark you late. But please don't be late again." Ms. Happi told them.

Editor: I am not doing that.

...

"So, yesterday, we played that icebreaker game!" Ms. Happi said excitedly. "Who had fun?"

A few murmurs and nods.

Then, crickets started chirping. Ms. Happi realized there were pest infections plaguing the classroom, and she decided, after class, she would make a trip to the janitor's office.

"Alright, so I'm one of the amazing history teachers at this prestigious school." She said, waving jazz hands.

More stares.

"Uh..." Ms. Happi didn't feel so happy right now.

"Ms. Happi," A girl asked in a pleasant accent.

"Yes... Tasnim?" Ms. Happi asked.

"What are we learning today?" Tasnim said.

"Well actually, I don't have a lesson plan today..." Ms. Happi said, then realizing what she said- "Don't tell the principal, please!"

"Free hundreds?" Call called out.

"I can't give you that one, but I can give you two zeros?" Ms. Happi asked. "Actually it doesn't matter how many zeros I give you, I'm sure you'll earn just as many as long as you try."

"No, it's fine..." Call said nervously.

"Anyways, where was I?" Ms. Happi asked. "Oh yes, world history."

"Hmm... Where to start? Well, I guess, first, I'll recap." She said, pulling out a dusty history book from her desk. Muttering to herself, she flipped through the pages...

"Okay," She said, closing the book.

"The universe was created by the Big Bang. Fast forward ten billion years, and that's when our solar system was created!"

Steven diligently paid attention to the lecture. He loved history, in all its glory.

'Zzz...'

"Four billion years ago, the first living organism on this planet formed. Who knew, eventually, these organisms would slowly give way to all different creatures!"

'Zzz...'

"Humans only arrived on this planet 6-7 million years ago. The modern-day humans only appeared around 800,000 to 300,000 years, ago."

'Zzz...'

Ms. Happi happily lectured on, obvious to what was happening in the classroom.

. . .

"Most of today's culture dates back to merely a few millennia ago. In fact, China, India, Egypt, and Italy are all ancient civilizations that managed to persist to modern-day..."

. . .

"Without some of these cultures, we wouldn't have some of the things we have today. For example, some technology was made possible by these cultures. I think the best thing they invented was some of the delicious food we still get to eat today!"

Steven woke up.

"Oh, well food isn't part of the curriculum..." Ms. Happi continued on.

Steven fell asleep.

. . .

"They contributed many of our moral beliefs. Leaving behind stories of fantastical creatures, and such wonders."

. . .

"Today, technology has advanced quite far. We have computers, T.V's, and the smartphones that you can't be without for mere minutes. We have Virtual worlds and faster and faster transportation. Everything these days is interconnected! We have made huge medical advancements and scientific breakthroughs. We have built so many architectural wonders!"

"History seems simple, it's like a memoir of the past..."

"Or... is that all there is to history?" Ms. Happi said, secretively.

The bell rang.
