What's A King Without A System?

Chapter 106 - Hol' Up

"What's going on there?" A troubled young woman looked over her shoulder and saw a ruckus going on in the distance.

Hearing the table banging and the roaring laughter coming from that direction drew her ire. She was just about to eat her first food for the day when a bunch of kids suddenly interrupted her. Her already bad mood was getting worse.

It was bad enough that her red hair was unusually untidy today, leaving it to a mere scrunchy to make a sloppy ponytail. If only those bastards at the second floor actually looked at her new prospect. She can't even sleep properly because of it.

They dismissed her claim of scouting a potential 'Class S' as soon as she mentioned St. Legaspi. When she first applied to do her scouting here, no one discouraged her or anything like that. It was only yesterday that she got to hear about this place having 'differing perspectives' on the use of gifts. Simply put, no one had ever told her anything about this stupid school being treated like it was a damn plague!

Still, it could be said the even while wearing only light make up on her face, Jessica was a beautiful woman. She just had that welcoming face that is paired with her trademark angelic smile. The mole on the right of her luscious red lips was enchanting, as enchanting as her deep, blue eyes. What's more, her body was something that most people would want for themselves. Both men and women alike.

Her long legs were hidden behind a pair of black stockings, topped off with a professional, black skirt. Her form fitting top showcased her well-endowed c.h.e.s.t, but not too much that it makes those who see her make out what's hidden underneath. But that didn't make those with enough courage to lose hope. If anything, it only made them want to see more of her.

But even as she grew up having such a fine appearance, she was never one to flaunt it. She had never felt that her appearance was a benefit inside the 'company', not really. She was confident enough to say that it wasn't something that helped her climb the ranks or anything like that.

Even her mentor, who was just as beautiful, never felt that her beauty was something to be considered as an advantage. Having gifts usually grant a person with a beautiful appearance, with those having a grander ability being much more attractive as well. That's why she never bothered with it.

If anyone was to ask Jessica of what she was proud of the most, it would be her 'special' gift. Sure, most of the people in the 'company' were gifted as well, but she was more than just a mere telepath. Telepaths like her are able to create barriers and use voiceless communication, but those are just the basics. She had a secret that she had never told anyone before, not even her beloved mentor.

She could see a person's potential. Not just those with 'gifts', even those without them. At least not yet. When she activates this ability, her whole perspective on the world would turn dark, pitch black.  At first, she thought that she had turned blind, only to see the first color other than black in that space.

A volcanic red sphere that bordered on orange, all encased inside a light red silhouette in the shape of a person. When she indivertibly ran out of energy, she finally saw that the human silhouette was actually her mentor. And even though there were many people in that room, she was the only one that wasn't just pitch black.

At first, she wanted to tell her mentor about her ability, wanting to confide in her to further understand her gift. But knowing her mentor, she'd be too focused on finding out what caused her to develop it in the first place, rather than finding out what the gift actually does.

After a thinking about it for a good while, she decided against telling her mentor about it. At least until she's able to know if it was even something that's useful for anyone, because she knows a few gifts that were more like 'curses' to be honest.

It took her a while to finally reach a good level of understanding of what her power was for. When she was sent in for the test, she had used her ability to check her fellow test takers. She wanted to see if there were people in the room that had any color to them. For that test, there were a total of six passers. Excluding herself, there were five people that had any color. All of them passed.

But even though she could say that those with colors had potential, those people also had varying levels of talent as well. Even though she had only ever seen three colors before, she knew that there might be more than that. It was exactly what happened when she first saw her new prospect, a boy named 'Zel Huertazuela'.

It was from this new prospect that she saw a new color, as well as the most complex image she had ever witnessed. Even though she had awakened her gift at the tender age of five, she had never seen one like the one that boy presented to her. He showed her a simple purple crown with seven gemstones on it, although only one was glowing ever so brightly. Though the red silhouette was disappointing, that could be solved by training.

She knew a lot of people that had the color of their silhouettes change over time, even her mentor's red had turned green just a few months ago. What really made her feel confident about the boy was still that complex image that he had, something she'd never seen before. The radiant light it gave off was so distracting that she hadn't tried to use her ability when she knows he's at school.

As of now, it was something that only she could see, at least that's what she always thought. It's not like the 'company' ever discloses information like that to first level members like her. If she wanted to show the 'company' her worth, she needed to bring in some proof of her gift's capabilities.

As a way to maximize her gift's capabilities, she decided to be a Prospector. A role that is only given out to those who have decided to take it easy and leave the front lines. If anything, it was a job for those who had given up on climbing the ranks. Passing their responsibility of taking a more active approach to a younger member that they'd recruit themselves, a prospect.

But it wasn't like that for Jessica, it never was. She just wanted to give back to the 'company' that her mentor loves so much. In a confusing sort of way, it was all just a ruse so that she can leave. This way, she can leave without looking ungrateful to the people that raised her.

Seeing as trouble looked to be brewing between a group of children just a few tables away from hers, Jessica stood up to face them. What she didn't expect was for her friend, Jenny, to hold her back once she did.

"Don't do it, Jess. Those kids there are the 'untouchables'. Children of the boss' friends, very rich friends that pretty much own this school. You could lose your job if you try doing anything against those kids. Just let them be, they'll stop after a while anyway."

Jenny was a short but lean bodied woman. She had always been a teacher that takes care of her students, but that's only in the classroom. In this school, there are certain unwritten rules that must be followed to succeed. Never mind succeeding, it should be followed just so they could keep their jobs.

It is her love of children that made her a competent teacher, a caring teacher. But it was also due to this job that she could feed her five siblings and ailing mother. She can't lose her job over this, so she won't act if she could help it. The same was true for her friend as well, as she knows that Jess needed this job to pay for her student loans.

As much as she wanted to follow her heart on this matter, she couldn't let Jess take that risk. As knowing that those who cross that line usually don't end up doing well for themselves. Those tricky rich men can be quite the sticky trouble if handled improperly.

"It's not like I'm going to slap them or anything. Watch, I'll handle it."

Jessica wasn't going to have any of that nonsense. If there was something that she had learned from being in the company her whole life, it was that being passive is not a solution to anything. If you want things done, you have to make sure that you do something about it.

'Untouchables? My a.s.s. If those kids touch a single hair of that boy, I'm going to give them a proper scolding!'

Looking at the children that were being bullied, Jessica was able to see Zel sitting among them. She used her ability to check up on Zel's 'potential', just so she can assure herself that this was worth it. After all, if she really was to make a stand for him and it turns out that she won't gain anything from it, she'd lose a lot. Even though she'd probably still do it anyway, she at least wanted to get something out of it.

'What?'

But when she was checking out Zel's potential, which was glowing a rather deep indigo now, compared to the red that it was before. What was strange was that he wasn't the only one as the girl sitting next to him also showed a deep indigo silhouette.

'What's going on here!?'
