When Back In Time

Chapter 17 - Seconds to Fall

SHE NOTICED two guardia civil (civil guards) were following her. Esperanza turned her head to ensure that she was wrong.

And dang! She's not wrong.

Two civil guards were indeed tailing her.

'Why? Why me?' she asked herself.

Her pace changed. She felt as she walked faster, the two behind her picked up with her pace.

'Oh no. This is not good.'

She started to run.

She heard the two called out to her to halt. Yet she continued to dash away.

The two chased her.

'Why are they following me? I'm not Pepe nor a rebel. I didn't do anything wrong. So why?' she pondered to herself.

She pondered in the corner of her memories that she indeed didn't remember doing anything or may upset the police.

The sky was dark and the rain started to fall.

The road she sprinted was starting to get wet. The two behind her still pursuing her.

'Why?!'

A hand suddenly grabbed her. She looked surprised to see Pepe. 'He's alive. I' m so glad to see him in one piece.'

"Pepe!" she exclaimed. Her heart warmed to see him good and alive.

Pepe looked at Esperanza and told her to follow him. The two took the road near a cliff. Behind them, the two civil guards were still in tow.

'Don' t they get tired of chasing people? When will they stop?' she questioned herself. 'Meeting civil guards is tiring. Being chased by them is tiring. When will this stop?'

One of the men in uniform loaded his revolver with ammo and started to fire them.

Esperanza jolted as she was taken in surprised. This caused her to trip accidentally as her foot caught a rock.

It was so fast, Esperanza could not fathom how things happened.

As she remembered grabbing Pepe's arm as she was about fall.

He bent down to help her, but her f.o.r.c.i.b.l.y grabbing his camisa de chino (white shirt) cause them to fall. Then she remembered Pepe rolled (of how this happened, she had no idea). Then he suddenly slides off and went off the cliff while Esperanza was in tow, grabbing his shirt.

"OH MY GOSH!" she exclaimed.

Their screams reverberated in the forest.

And then on there fall they hit branches from a tall tree and fall again and hit another branch. Esperanza lost her hold on his shirt.

It took them seconds to hit the ground inside the forest. Pepe landed first facedown before Esperanza landed on him.

The two guards from above the cliff, looked down to see people they were chasing. They saw nothing but green heads of the trees.

One of the guards assumed, "Patay na siguro sila." (They might be dead)

His comrade looked at him and nodded.

The two turned their backs and walked away.

Down below, Pepe and Esperanza made it, safely, full of scratches and wounds and some broken bones.
