Chapter 21 Part 1: Natarossa Seminary

The place where I woke up was shrouded in darkness. Children lay in each of the bunk beds side-by-side. No one was awake, as if it were still dawn.

You might be surprised by the sudden change of scenery, but it was quite familiar to me. It was a sign that I had entered a stage-type gate.

This stage-type gate takes on a form that is similar to a “role-playing game” format.

Once inside, each player is assigned an appropriate role and follow a sub-story within the gate, which is the usual way to clear it. It wasn’t clear now, but presumably the other people were assigned roles as well.

「Natarossa Seminary, LA.」

I glanced back at the name shown on the notification. It was a seminary with an unfamiliar name.

Opinions about stage-type gates are divided. Although the stage-type gates came from varying backgrounds and purposes… Some researcher’s have argued that stages share a single worldview, which only changes depending on the circumstances and time period in which each person finds themselves in.

This has never been precisely verified, but I agree with the assertion. Many of the stages I’ve cleared have subtly similar cultural styles.

I could infer that the field-type gates were different in nature, as the passage of time were identical to the outside world, while the stage-type gates had different scales.

I cautiously got out of bed. The sensations in my arms and legs were not unfamiliar. I felt my hands, and it was as if my body had come as it was. I was relieved that I wasn’t in the form of another person. There were no mirrors in the room, so I couldn’t be sure.

I felt like something was getting in the way, so I ran my hand over the nape of my neck. An old pendant was caught in my hand. It was shaped like wings spreading from each side.

What? Was it an item necessary to clear this gate?

I stepped closer to the window and peered out. It was still dark, so I couldn’t see properly, but there were a lot of white buildings, that befits the name ‘seminary‘.

“Ugh… Is that you Ritch?”

I heard a sleepy voice from behind me. I couldn’t give a quick answer, so I remained silent.

“You’re up early… I’ll have to wake the other kids up soon. Morning prayer meeting is about to begin…”

She yawned softly, but there was no sign of distress in her voice. Apparently my name is ‘Ritch’ here.

Note: You’ve met the main character (Dahlia)」.

That girl must be Dahlia.

Dahlia lit the candle, with a familiar gesture. Only with the dim light, could she finally see her properly.

Her faded golden hair was naturally curled and fell to her chest. White skin complemented her Western-like features. Her green eyes were still half-closed, and even that made her look beautiful. She was a gorgeous woman.

“Everyone, wake up!”

Dahlia shouted, and one by one, the lying children began to rise.

“Hurry up! If we’re late again today, we’ll get in trouble!”

“Okay, Dahlia, I’ll be right there.”

The room brightened as several candles were lit. All the children had an exotic appearance and various hair colors.

“All right, we’re ready!”

“Let’s go!”

“I wonder what’s for breakfast today? I’m already starving.”

“Mary, is there ever a day when you’re not hungry?”

The way they talked, they sounded like kids their age. She couldn’t have been more than 17 or 18.

“Ritch, what are you doing?”

Dahlia asked sweetly. I nonchalantly replied that I was going to go, and that I would go with her.

“You seem a little down today. Is something bothering you?”

“Nothing like that, I’m just a little sleepy.”

I don’t know what religion it is, but from what I’ve heard, morning prayers are led by a rotating group of nuns every day.

I thought, that it was a bit harsh for growing teenagers, but I kept my mouth shut as Dahlia told me that a life of worship was meant to be like this, and that it’s more valuable because it’s difficult.

I was served a pale potato soup with a loaf of crusty bread for breakfast.

After breakfast, we went back to our quarters and rested for a while, and when the sun rose and the birds chirped, we began our religious studies.

We studied about myths, rules, and truths about the gods they worshiped. I stopped listening because I wasn’t really interested.

Dahlia, who was sitting beside me, was listening intently with a twinkle in her eyes.

“When the gods were created, gates began to open, and chosen people with power were born. That’s where the 「God’s Fragment」originated…”

Then, the nun teaching the class pointed towards Dahlia.

“Miss Dahlia.”

“Yes, Sister.”

“You are an excellent student, Miss Dahlia, but I see you have not yet learned how to make good friends.”

My head snapped up at those words. It was definitely a snipe at me.

“I hope you will use your wonderful personality to guide those around you in a good direction, Miss Dahlia.”

“Yes, Sister…”

As Dahlia took her seat, I whispered a small apology. Dahlia smiled softly as if it was okay. If she didn’t like my behavior in class, she could have pointed it out to me directly.

“You are all here to accept a fragment of God.”

I nodded as if I knew about it, even though it was the first time I’ve heard of it.
