Chapter 21 Part 2: Natarossa Seminary

“The path is not easy, but did you not come here to be together in the arms of God?”

“Yes, Sister.”

The rest of the children answered, except for me. I seem to be the only one who is confused.

“Pray like the dawn, purify your bodies, keep your hearts right and your minds clear! … Only then can you become a vessel to receive 「God’s Fragments」.”

“Yes, Sister.”

“Once you have received the 「God’s Fragments」, you will look down upon world and become a ‘saint’ who carries with God’s Will.”

“Yes, Sister.”

“Since the current Saintess is unwell, that vessel must come from among you, but…… it is disturbing to see how you are unable to see the bigger picture, you are intoxicated by the comfort in front of you.”

The nun looked straight at me and continued with her final words.

“This seminary is a place cut off from the outside world. Your family, your status, your learning… Means nothing. To leave all of that behind and be reborn as a vessel. That is your mission and your destiny. Keep that in mind.”

With that, the nun turned and walked out of the classroom.

「God’s Fragments」, vessels, saints, disconnected from the outside world… This one smelled like trouble.

I was mentally exhausted, after a full day of classes. It wasn’t easy to pretend to understand a doctrine I didn’t even know. Before I knew it, the sun was already setting. The sunset was visible through the window of the room.

“Now what?”

“Nothing. Let’s say our evening prayers and go to bed.”

I was afraid that we still have to take extra lessons, so when I asked her, Dahlia nonchalantly replied that we still had one more appointment. Damn.

The path of clerics, are so demanding. I suddenly admired Jo Yeon-ho, even though he’s not a priest.

The evening prayers were held in small groups in each room. The six of us sat in a circle, knelt on the floor, and prayed.

At what seemed like early evening, we all turned off the lights and went to bed. It was very strange not to have a clock or a mirror. I laid down, closed my eyes, and pretended to sleep. I shouldn’t fall asleep completely.

I wondered, if the others are also inside the seminary.

I had the impression that it was more like a convent than a seminary. That’s because I couldn’t see any signs of men.

The other kids told me that priests would often come here, but they are always busy and hard to meet. I don’t know what they’re doing, but they’re obviously working on something. The children laughed, saying that they must be trying to turn them into vessels.

‘Then maybe Kim Ki-taek or Jeon Chung-Woon will be assigned the role of a priest. I think Sun Ha-Rang is probably in the secondary division too… And Hyewon-Unnie, is probably a nun? I haven’t seen her yet, but I don’t think we’ve seen all the nuns.’

I need to meet up with them and confirm each other’s location immediately. It’s a basic rule of thumb when entering this type of stage terrain to look for your teammates first.

Except for me, everyone else are professional hunters, so I’m sure they’re doing well.

‘Jo Yeon-ho said that we didn’t get in together last time, so it must be the same this time.’

I figured I’d just have to find someone else.

I woke up to find the children fast asleep and realized that the nuns were taking turns on patrol outside. As my eyes adjusted to the darkness, I could make out blurry outlines even without a candle. But the simplest way was this.

«Spatial interference»

I activated my unique skill and quickly took a grasp of my surroundings. At least the hallway in front of me was empty.

I cautiously made my way out of the room. My destination is the upper floor where the priests live. The top floor is a prayer room dedicated for the priests, and the two floors below are where they live. So if I follow the stairs up, I should be able to find something.

‘There’s a high probability that either Kim Ki-taek or Jeon Chung-Woon will be on the priest’s chambers, while she was not sure about Pyo Hye-won and Sun Ha-Rang’s whereabouts, so let’s start with the one with a higher probability.’

Just as I was about to step onto the stairs, I saw a light coming from the opposite hallway.

It’s a nun.

A nun was walking down the dimly lit hallway holding a candle. At first I thought she was on patrol, but then she was accompanied by a young child. I don’t know her name, but she was in the same class as me. She was following the nun wordlessly with a hardened expression. I watched them, while hiding in the darkness.

They began to climbing the stairs without saying a word. Feeling uneasy, I muffled my footsteps and followed after them.

One floor, two floors, three floors… gradually passed.

I also passed by the area, where the priest’s chambers are located, and headed to the top. The top floor was supposed to be a prayer room for the priests, but… What could a nun and a child who hadn’t even become a nun be doing there?

She picked up the doorknob and knocked. The door to the top floor opened.

“God bless you.”

“God bless you.”

After exchanging religious greetings, the nun pushed the child into the room. The child stretched out a skinny arm and grabbed the nun’s collar, but was coldly shoved away.

As the nun turned and ran down the steps, I hurriedly clung to the ceiling, and hide. I had to know what the hell was going on inside the door. However, I had a terrible premonition.

I swallowed hard and cautiously placed my eyes on the keyhole of the door. Unlike the dark stairwell, the inside was well lit. As if it were broad daylight. I frowned at the lack of light for a moment, but then I could see everything clearly.

The child was restrained in the center, that’s all I could say. Her arms and legs were pinned to the chair, and she had a rag covering her mouth, and a terrified expression. The child seemed to know what was to come.

People in neat robes took turns muttering blessings over the child’s head. When the ceremony was over, the child’s fingers were suddenly cut off.
