Chapter 30 Part 1: Night Revolver

Sunlight streamed into the hospital room. It was a sign of the arrival of morning. It wasn’t long before a nurse checked on me. The bandages on my abdomen were removed, disinfected, and rewrapped. When asked if I was feeling uncomfortable, I replied that I was fine. I was in a boring hospital room, there’s nothing to do but watch TV. But when I turned on the TV, it was all about the gate, so I didn’t want to watch it for long. After a while, a group of people came to visit…

“Seo-ha, big sister is here!”

Hye-won cheerfully opened the door and walked in, she was followed by Jo Yeon-ho. Even though I’ve been hospitalized for three months, they still come to visit me whenever they can, and I can’t thank them enough for it.

“Hyewon-Unnie, I’ll be discharged in a few days anyway, so you don’t have to come visit me, you’ve been so busy lately.”

“No, no, no, I can spare the time to visit you, my work is going well!”

Backwater Guild was currently in the middle of a legal dispute with the Red Flames. The reason, of course, was the Holy Grail, which was an S-class holy artifact. The Hidden Gate in question had involved Hyewon-Unnie and me.

Hyewon-Unnie claimed that Backwater also had a stake in the Holy Grail, and… a legal battle was underway to determine the exact proportions. “That’s right, Yeon-Ho, if you had joined us, we wouldn’t have had to argue about it, since it would be a three on three claim.”

“I told you… Healers weren’t allowed inside.”

“I know, but it’s still a shame. Don’t worry, Seo-ha, your sister will make sure you get your due.”

Jo Yeon-ho grumbled in frustration. Even if it was really a 3-3 claim, if they wanted to increase the ratio somehow, a legal battle would still be inevitable.

“Anyway. I’m sick of hearing the name ‘Red Flames’ anymore.”

Hye-won muttered as she brushed her fingers across the railing of my bed. “Unnie, I’m pretty sure I consented to what happened back then…”

“Yeah! That’s the problem, you child! How can you just say ‘Yeah, okay‘ to something so dangerous without thinking about it? I should’ve known when you said it was okay the first time the Red Flames came, and those bastards actually lured you in and made you see the worst of it?”

Hye-won gritted her teeth. Jo Yeon-ho nodded his head in agreement. I couldn’t help but laugh awkwardly, haha. Hye-won was so shocked by the sudden gate clearance, and the mess I was in right afterward, that she even grabbed the Red Flames Guild Leader by the scruff of the neck. I was in the operating room at that time, so I don’t know, but… Kim Ki-taek was also stunned, and Jeon Chung-Woon was injured, so they must have been taken to the hospital as well.

She can’t just grab Sun Ha-Rang by the collar, so I think she just grabbed him instead… What a reckless thing to do. It’s a shame that Red Flames also knew that they wouldn’t look good if this matter was revealed to the media, so they kept quiet, and it’s no different from social death for an Average guild to be pushed around by such a large guild. Well. Anyway, I’m only 20 years old now, so it would be morally reprehensible if I used that day to clear the gate. Although the process was a little rough.

“Did you say that someone from Hunter Management Bureau was coming later?”

“Yeah. You’re about to be discharged.”

It’s a good thing that they waited so long. I’m sure they were a bit understanding because of the severity of my condition at the time. I’m the number one contributor to the clearing of the Yeonhwado Gate. It hasn’t been officially revealed, but some of the people on the Red Flames side and the government side knew about my involvement. I don’t want to make a big deal out of it, I don’t really want all these trouble…

It’s not just about me being the number one contributor in the Yeonhwado Gate clearing, even If I wasn’t, just the fact that I contributed to clearing it was enough to make me turn off my phone to stop all the buzzing. The government wants to keep useful people in the country. The military is always poor, but it’s also stable, so it’s not a bad option.

“I think they’ll suggest that you enter the academy, too. So it’s best that you think about it carefully first.”

“I will.”

I smiled softly. It’s better than having them worry about me. Hye-won chatted like that for a while, but when Jo Yeon-ho said,

“Guild Leader, you should get going.”

She finally stopped and let me off.

As always, he was such a lovely man. I guess it’s worth siding with him. As Hye-won said, today is the day that someone from the Hunter Management Bureau is supposed to come. Basically, people who became Awakeners due to an unfortunate accident like this would often blossom their abilities by surviving through the crisis. So this is probably a rare era of great opportunities for the rookies. In the meantime, the country recommends them to academies or provide compulsory training for prospective Hunters.

‘Not all Awakeners become Hunters, as they are a very small minority.’

“Hello, Ms. Han Seo-ha. I’m Shin Dong-Woon from the Hunter Management Bureau.”

A man who looked like a salaryman smiled and extended his hand for a handshake, but underneath that suit lurks a disciplined body. The Hunter Management Bureau is often called in to break up physical altercations with some Hunters, and most of them are current or former Hunters.

“I’m sure most of you are aware of this, but I’ll give you a quick rundown. In your case, Ms. Seo-ha, based on the interviews with the survivors at the gym, as well as the words of people from Backwater and Red Flames, you seem to have a lot of potential. First of all, I would like to recommend the National Hunter Academy to you, have you ever thought about it?”

Most guilds get their new recruits not through the annual national hunter accreditation test, nor a randomly opened gate, but they do it like in the movies. They’ll often stumble upon them at a random gate and bring them in. But how do they pick out the promising ones from the stellar field of Hunter wannabes?

That’s where the Academy comes in. It’s a kind of elite course, and the larger guilds tend to recruit graduates from there. After three years of training and practice, these new hunters are more like “Seasoned Recruits” and are better forged compared to others who aren’t able to train in an academy.
