 Chapter 30 Part 1: Night Revolver

“I’m sorry, but I’m not interested in joining the Academy.”

“That’s too bad… If you ever change your mind, let me know.”

He handed me a business card. I made a show of taking it.

“I take it you’re not interested in being a hunter?”

“Not really.”

“Then you’re planning to take the ‘Gate Entry Qualification Test’ right away?”

Shin Dong-woon laid out the papers he’d brought in front of me.

“Considering Ms. Seo-ha’s discharge schedule, the qualification exam in two weeks seems to be the most appropriate. As you know, the course is to test your qualifications to enter a gate, so if you take it without special training, you could be seriously injured.”

Not all Awakeners are qualified to enter the Academy. There are only a limited number of spots available to join the Academy every year, and they can’t just let anyone into the Gates who don’t meet the minimum qualifications. That’s why they had introduced the Gate Entry Qualification Test. It’s a mandatory test that new Awakeners must pass to become a certified Hunter. Only those who pass this test are eligible to enter the Gates. Of course, it’s rare for a typical newcomer to pass the test on their own… And it’s mostly those who have attended private academies run by other guilds or hunter academies run by former hunters passes.

“I’ve also prepared the application documents just in case, so I’ll leave them for you. Oh, by the way, the Red Flame Guild has expressed an interest in contacting you. Since your injury hasn’t healed yet, they were not allowed to enter without Ms. Seo-Ha’s permission, but would you like to meet them?”

“What’s their name?”

“Hunter Kim Ki-Taek, Hunter Jeon Chung-Woon, and Hunter Sun Ha-Rang.”

“Just let them know I’ll meet with them later.”

“Okay.”

It’s a bit awkward to meet with people from Red Flames right now. Especially since they had a disagreement with Hyewon-Unnie at the moment… Now that I’m finally out of the gate, there’s nothing good about being entangled with a giant guild.

He’s not sure what items were given to the second and third place contributors though.

‘My companion…’ This thing had been with me before, and will be by my side again this time. My soul item. With a flick of my finger, the cylinder spun with a hiss. It was a revolver, a firearm characterized by a rotating cylinder.

“It’s a gun…”

Of course, it’s not just an ordinary gun. Although it looks like one, it doesn’t contain real bullets. What you put inside are not bullets but mana or magic stones. When I showed him the empty cylinder, Shin Dong-woon looked a little relieved.

“Even in this era, firearms are still considered a threat, so it’s still a little conservative with the permits. There’s a chance you’ll be banned from using them on a normal basis, so it’s better to know about it in advance.”

I nodded. I’ve been banned from carrying my holster outside of the gate before, but it didn’t matter much since I didn’t have much of a reason to carry it outside of the gate in the first place. That rule had been broken when the Toluk invasion was in full swing.

Shin Dong-woon bowed as he rose from his seat. When he left, it was just me and the item in the hospital room. I gently stroke the barrel of the gun. It looks like an ordinary black revolver, but that’s not the only power it holds.

Yes. It was a weapon you can’t buy. A weapon with an “Ego” that belongs to the owner and grows with them! Most of its features are still locked, and its skill level is low, but it will grow through time. More than anything else, it’s a weapon that suits me because I can use it at both close and long range. My marksmanship wasn’t that great, but, well, actually, looking back, I think I was more likely to just shoot myself in the head.

It’s more of a melee weapon so of course, I have to use a dagger or other sub-weapon together with it, but I’m sure I’ll evolve a set of abilities that work for me over time.

I stared at the Night revolver for a while, and reminisced the memories I had with it. I suddenly noticed the papers that Shin Dong-Woon had left behind and immediately filled them out. As long as I pass the ‘Gate Entry Qualification Test‘ in two weeks, I’ll be able to work as a Hunter, so my urgent desire needs to be put out. The gate was cleared much faster than before, so I had bought myself some time. But we had to move faster. We have five years until the Toluk invasion. It could be sooner, or it could be later. In the meantime, I had to figure out a way to outwit them.

I had one more advantage to gain by entering the gate. Theo’s Arrangements, the traitor from another world… I need to find all of them!
