Chapter 37 Part 2: Memories:

Gravity in memories? That sounded very outlandish. “So I wanted to look at a very, very light memory, a memory from just a day ago, and… just like gravity, it would naturally pull you to things that are stronger, you’re drawn to things that are very memorable and have had a big impact on shaping your person. It’s inevitable, because there’s an attraction to everything.”

“So… that’s my…… heaviest memory?”

Lee Eun-Woo asked in a shaky voice. What the hell was he looking at? His face was very pale.

“Don’t worry. According to the contract, I won’t say a word.”

I was starting to get nervous.

“Then let’s get this over with. My work time is about to come up!”

As I watched Lee Eun-Woo’s body slump, almost dragging himself out of the machine, I thought to myself. What is my most memorable memory? The memory that had the most impact on shaping me?

“Don’t worry too much. I’ll stop you before you go unconscious.”

That’s so believable. I had a slow, ominous machine over my head. My vision was blocked by darkness, and my body felt increasingly weak. I felt my mind being sucked away. When I woke up. I was in the queen ant’s chamber again. Floating with my back in thin air.

‘What was that?’

I looked down at my hand and saw that it was translucent. It seemed to be some sort of…. Thought or form. This is how I see my memories? Below me, a battle was in full swing.

“…Start casting!”

“My accuracy on a moving target is poor. It’s a waste of mana!”

“I’ll try to distract it, but first, start casting!”

“How can you!”

Lee Eun-Woo shouted harshly, but the person below me didn’t seem to mind at all. With a stern face, I looked at the queen ant that had flown up to me and shouted.

“It must have expended a lot of energy hatching, this is our chance!”

“Try to hold on… As long as you can, so we have a better chance of survival.”

Then, suddenly, I felt my body collapse. I knew it instinctively.

‘I’m rewinding’

Time, and my memory is playing backwards. Like when you spin a videotape and the sound isn’t quite right. I was left with the sensation of something fuzzy passing through me. When my senses returned for a moment.

“… How long was I lying there?”

“About a day.”

“And the other ants?”

“I haven’t seen them yet.”

“Can you contact the others?”

“I’ve been in and out of here, but the cell phones and the walkie-talkies are not working.”

“Oh.”

I could see the freshly awakened Lee Eun-Woo asking me questions, and there was no sign of embarrassment at my appearance at all. After All, I already know what he looked like. A little more time passed.

“So I was thinking, what if I give that room to Seo-Ha instead. What do you think? Do you want to live with me?”

“Okay… Wait a minute.”

A very happy moment and then.

“… I’ll lure the boss monster out.”

The moments of me risking my life passed by quickly. How far was I going to go? I’m already past the queen ant’s chamber.

“Kill me, please… Ritch… Please… God will take me… Please”

“I’m going to die anyway…… I’m going to die… I can… I can… I can…”

“Let me go… without pain… Please…”

…I felt a splash of blood. I reached out, but I couldn’t touch it. There was no time for sentimentality. Time was still rewinding.

“……Are you afraid of fire?”

“What…?”

The nostalgic faces blurred pass. I wondered if the people at the gym were okay. We didn’t really know each other beyond our first names, and there was no way I could find them again. Well, even if I did, I would be remembered as someone who stayed for a while and then left. This time, a very long time had already passed. I wandered around in an empty space for a while. Was this what Choi Seok-chul was talking about, being sucked in by ‘Gravity’? The backgrounds that were shuffling around in my mind stopped. It was a familiar background. It was also greatly softened.

In it, was the area of the indoor gymnasium. I was walking around the perimeter alone, in the dark of night. When I saw the water gun strapped to my waist instead of a dagger. It was then that I realize that… It was me before I regressed.

Before regression, It was the ‘Me’ who got caught up in the gate without really knowing anything. It was the same me who ran out of the grocery store like I’m about to die, and barely made it into the indoor gym. Every night, I prayed that I would survive another day, and I shivered with an unknown anxiety and fear.

“This is enough,” I muttered in a small voice. My complexion was very pale. I looked around from time to time. With skillful movements, I climbed up a tree. I snatched the rope I had stolen and tied it to a tree that pierced the concrete floor. I clumsily tied a knot.

“If I fall, then it’s all over.”

“Ha… Ha….”

I was nervous. But I was also filled with despair of not knowing how much longer I’d be stuck inside this hellhole, with the grim prospect that I’d end up being fed to the monsters if I held on much longer. I gripped the rope tightly with a solemn expression.

“Hey, are you okay?”

Oh, yeah. It was then. In that brilliant moonlight, her sandy-colored hair shone almost blond. She didn’t seem to find it strange to be talking nonchalantly to a young girl who was about to end her life.
