Chapter 72 Part 1:  Compatible

A familiar place inside Theo’s room.

As if he had agreed to do so beforehand, I found Theo waiting there for me.

Hyewon-unnie1Unnie: Older Sister thought I was captivated by the view of the blue reed gate, that’s why I kept going back inside often, but in reality, I mostly spent all my energy and time inside this dim cave.

“Theodore.”

“You’ve finally come, Earthling!”

He was sprawled across the top of the desk with his tiny body.

It could have been considered cute, but right now all I could see is a hateful tiny creature.

“I told you. You can just call me Theo, but you’re so stubborn.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

He must have sensed my mood and sat up straight with his back to me.

“Why are you acting this way? Oh, is it because of that gate the other day?”

“Yes. That gate. Didn’t you say you were going to sell me the information about the non-wave gates, and I will give you all of Earth’s food, drink, pictures, and movies!”

“Hmmm…”

He laughed coldly.

I frozed.

“Earthling, I thought the deal that we had was that ‘I’ would sell the information when ‘I’ wanted to sell it?”

“… It was.”

“In my defense, I had no choice. I have to have a good track record to keep this job. If I tell you about it in advance, you’ll clear it right away, so I can’t help it either.”

I couldn’t control my expression, and I could feel my face freeze into a nasty grimace.

‘Yeah.’

I knew about it in my head.

Our deal had been light, and I hadn’t asked for information on ‘All’ non-wave gates, and Theo must have been feeling a bit overwhelmed lately, with all the plans he’d worked so hard for ending up in vain.

‘I know. I know about it… Because of that reason…’

I clenched my fists.

My lips were pressed together even more after I remembered the look Pyo Yeon-Won had while staring dazedly, outside the window.

“Oh no… Something must have happened when you ran out the other day..”

He chuckled.

“If I’d known it was going to be like this, I’d have just told you. It hurts me to see my one and only Earthling friend upset. I’m sorry if something bad happened.”

Objectively, it wasn’t anyone’s fault.

Theodore was doing his job, and I was doing mine as a Hunter.

It’s just that Pyo Yeon-Won was caught in the middle of it…

He was just unlucky, yeah.

It can happen to anyone born in this modern era where gates exist.

Gates are a natural disaster after all!

Nevertheless, why do I keep feeling emotional about it?

‘If I think about it, what happened to Yeon-Won was just his—bad fortune, and I can’t blame anyone… I can’t. Even if I want to.’

After finally thinking about it, my body couldn’t help but slump over, and my mind went blank—To Theodore, what happened to the gate meant nothing.

“… I think I just got a little too carried away. I’m sorry, I took it out on you.”

He finally took a breath of relief.

“Yeah. You don’t look well! You need to watch your temper.”

“I hear that a often!”

My head almost hurt.

“Did you have a good time exploring the dungeons?”

The gate officer said the same thing as always.

I somehow felt even more drained.

“Yeah… Thank you.”

I walked out with my head in a bow.

I’m sure he was just saying it out of habit.

It’s a time when gates have become prevalent and hunters are revered like celebrities.

While I was walking around, I passed by a billboard with a picture of a Hunter on it.

It was an ad for a hot chocolate with the tagline ‘Cozy, and Sweet.’ And a Hunter, who’s on the rise these days, was the face of the advertisement.

Tap.

“Excuse me.”

While I was walking past the billboard, someone approached me from behind, and my body reacted first.

It wasn’t until I grabbed the person’s wrist that I realized this wasn’t the gate anymore, but the streets.

“Oh. Sorry.”

If I hadn’t realized a second later, I would have chopped my hand over his wrists…

It was a dizzying thought.

A normal person’s wrist could have been broken in an instant.

“No, no. It’s okay, student. I was just going to tell you something nice…”

“I’m sorry, I’m not interested.”

He seemed to be someone from a religious organization.

I was just about to walk away when he squeezed a pamphlet into my hand.

“The world is about to end!”

Wow.

That was radical.

“It’s too late to regret it then, student! Listen to me now so you don’t have to regret it later〜.”

“Go find someone else. I’m not interested.”

“Oh, don’t do that〜.”

I don’t know what kind of cult this is.

I glanced at the pamphlet and saw that it said—

‘One-Eyed Church.’

“One-Eyed Church?”

Seriously? Of all things??

Maybe it was before it was radicalized, but…

It was definitely a group I didn’t want to get mixed up with.

(T/N: This was first mentioned in Chapter 17, and Seo-Ha referred to them as the One-Eyed Cult.)

‘Fine I’ll just take it.’

I obediently took the pamphlet, after thinking that if I forcefully took my hand away, and failed to control my strength, the other person might be seriously injured.

Then, as if that was enough for him, he just turned, and walked away with a smile on his face.

When I was about to throw away the pamphlet into a trash can near the station, a sentence printed on it suddenly caught my eye.

“..Huh ….?”

I rubbed my eyes again, but the words didn’t change after reading the large print.

I realized that this is obviously talking about Toluk.

‘……That’s right, It was a cult that claimed that these Gates were a sign of divine punishment, so they always talked about the destruction of the earth, but… An Invasion from another world?’
