43. Moments in Carriage

Hearing the question, Su Jie answered in an unhurried manner, “My parents once helped Elder Zhou, that’s why he treated me nice.”

That made sense, and plus Su Jie’s natural look, Xiao ShengNian believed it, gave a slight nod and leaned against the cushion behind him before saying in a lazy tone, “Tell me something about your childhood.”

Su Jie put on a thoughtful look before he uttered some insignificant words on and off.

“I’m the only child of my parents.”

“I remember there was a fire in the place where I lived as a child.”

“I liked a lovely girl when I was a child.”

After these, he stopped, trying to recall whatever might be suitable to talk about. However, after quite a while he found these were all that he could share with Xiao ShengNian. For other things in his memory, he had to keep them in heart for himself alone.

Xiao ShengNian was rendered a bit speechless. He wanted his childhood stories, not these boring and irrelevant fragments.

“Why didn’t you marry that lovely girl?” Xiao ShengNian wanted to ask why he was suddenly bent but his upbringing stopped him from asking such a rude question. Therefore, he put it in a more indirect way.

Su Jie was caught in a daze before he narrowed his eyes, thinking to himself, “Why didn’t I marry the girl? Because the Guqin Master said only one kid could walk out of the village alive, so I killed her. That must make me a selfish person? Killing so many kids to survive. Then since when did I stop liking the girl? Perhaps since Prince Qin first appeared before me in his pure white robe or when he first held my hands like he would never let go of me.”

“She became someone else’s child bride and broke my heart.” Su Jie lied.

“That’s good or you won’t be able to be by my side.” Xiao ShengNian didn’t say anything to comfort Su Jie for he had no experience of this sort due to his noble birth. And unknowingly, he let his guard down before Su Jie and began to speak in a more natural way.

“Yeah.” Su Jie nodded with a smile as he lifted the curtain to glance outside. The carriage had driven out of the capital onto a broad path planted with tall trees on its sides, the green refreshing to the eyes.

“Zhui Xing, stop at the next city for the night, we’ll set out tomorrow.” Xiao ShengNian raised his voice and ordered.

“Yes, Your Highness.” Zhui Xing’s reply was simple as ever. He kept a poker face as if what he was driving was not a carriage, but a chariot heading right into the middle of a battle.

“Have some refreshments if you’re hungry. I specially have them prepared for you.” Seeing Su Jie yawning all the way, Xiao ShengNian also got a bit sleepy. Yet luxurious and spacious as the carriage was, it could only accommodate one person to lie down and rest.

After a moment of hesitation, Xiao ShengNian gave a somewhat helpless smile, “Come, I’ll hold you in my arms then we can both have a rest.” With that, he took off his boots, ready for a nap.

Su Jie wanted to refuse when Xiao ShengNian asked with his brows raised, “What? You dare to refuse a prince? You don’t feel like sharing the same bed with me?”

He, a noble prince, condescended to share his not spacious bed with Su Jie, shouldn’t he feel honored and grateful?

At least that was what Xiao ShengNian was thinking about. Any other prince would just ask Su Jie to take the other carriage.

That gave Su Jie no chance to blurt out his refusal. Feeling a bit uncomfortable and strange, he lay down beside the prince as this was the very first time he had shared such a narrow bed with another man.

“Let’s change sides so you can sleep in the inner side,” said Xiao ShengNian.

“Oh.” Su Jie uttered as he moved to the inner side of the carriage. And immediately, Xiao ShengNian held him in his arms.

‘It’s so hot, and very crowded,” thought Su Jie. Then he closed his eyes as his thoughts ran wild, unknowingly drifting into sleep.

Yet Xiao ShengNian found it hard to fall asleep as he was worried that he might roll out of the bed during sleep. Therefore, he just held Su Jie and stared at his face.

The boy in his arms was breathing steadily, his long eyelashes casting light shadows on his face. Now in his sleep, his expressionless face had a touch of manful charm.
