Chapter 47 - Acts and Lies

"Madam, do you still want to eat?" Butler Lou noticed that Feng Mian hadn't left even after Zhang Liang departed.

Feng Mian shook her head. She was already full. "No, I don't want to eat again. I'm already full. Butler Lou, can you prepare a car? I want to visit my mother."

"Certainly."

Yu Yan hadn't sent her the material, so she still had some time. Besides, there was a possibility that she would need to work later, so Feng Mian grabbed her laptop to bring it to the hospital.

Soon afterwards, Feng Mian arrived by the hospital and immediately headed to her mother's room. The location of the hospital was pretty far from Zhang Liang's Mansion in the capital city, but Feng Mian didn't mind. If she moved her mother too, that might raise some suspicion.

"Mom, how are you today?"

"Mian'er!" Lin San's eyes lit up when she saw Feng Mian coming. "You finally visited me again. Are you no longer busy with work?"

"I apply for work from a distance." Feng Mian tapped her laptop that she brought with her. Pulling a chair, Feng Mian sat down near her mother's bed. It looked like her mother's complexion had turned much better.

Lin San frowned. "Are you sure that it's fine? You're going to have less bonus this way, right?"

The company usually only counts bonuses for their employees who worked full time. With Feng Mian working from home, she might not even get any bonus for this month or even year.

"Don't worry. It's fine, Mom."

With her living with Zhang Liang, Feng Mian didn't really need any bonus. He was giving her freedom to do whatever she wanted, which included her work. Of course, she couldn't tell this to her mother, yet. Her mother always wanted her to be like her parents, meeting each other and marrying because of love.

It used to be her dream too, but Feng Mian knew that not everything could work the way she wanted to.

Lin San sighed. "Fine, if that's what you say."

"I'm really fine."

Feng Mian checked her phone. Yu Yan hadn't sent anything, so she picked up the nearby fruit knife and apple before starting to peel it. She wanted to make a few bunnies for her mother.

Lin San smiled when she saw what Feng Mian did. In the past, it was her who made the apple bunnies for her daughter when Feng Mian was sick. Now, it's Feng Mian's turn.

"Right, you haven't told me more about Zhang Liang."

"Zhang Liang worked in the same company as me, Mom. He's not in the same department as me, but I meet him sometimes during meetings. That's how we know each other."

It was both the truth and lies. Zhang Liang obviously worked in the same company because it was his own company. As for the department, she was not even sure where she should categorize Zhang Liang into. Probably on the director's board? That already sounded very high above.

Lin San nodded. "I don't really care for his background as long as you can earn enough for living."

"Yes, Mom." Feng Mian smiled. It was her mother's influence that taught her the word 'enough.' There was no need for her to be overly ambitious in pursuing money and stability. Simplicity would be enough as long as one could be happy with their lives.

"So, what's your opinion about him?"

"He's good," Feng Mian replied slowly. She was not sure what she should say to her mother. Should she just admit that Zhang Liang was a bit intimidating? However, he always acted polite to her, which was surprising considering their difference in status. He never acted out of the line.

Except her first kiss… probably.

But since it was also necessary for acting, Feng Mian knew that it couldn't be helped.

Lin San arched her eyebrows. "There's no way you can just describe him as 'good,' right?"

"Well… He's very kind and patient with me…" Feng Mian was at lost. She didn't know what else to say.

"You look troubled."

"There are just some things that's hard to describe, Mom."

"Do you like him, then?"

Feng Mian could only smile while forcing her cheek to turn red. Her mind was trying to replay some embarrassing scenes she did in the past to make her acting more real. Ugh, she should have taken an acting class when she was younger if only she knew that she would need it.

As she had expected, her mother stopped asking about Zhang Liang and talked about other things.

'I'm safe, for now.'

Feng Mian was not sure when her mother would start to pester her about Zhang Liang again. She just hoped that she would be able to talk more about him to her mother later.

With that, Feng Mian spent the rest of the day accompanying her mother and did her work in the afternoon after Yu Yan had sent her the material.
