113. Another Witness (1)

Strangely enough, Qin Huai, who had been trembling with fear since the moment he’d set foot in this mortuary, was now not afraid at all because of Li Zong’s arrival. He couldn’t help but step closer to He Zheng and whispered, “Bro, it’s true what they say, ‘Great trees are good for shade.’ You see, even my fluttering little heart calmed down as soon as my brother-in-law showed up.”

He Zheng rolled his eyes. Qin Huai, feeling that his words were a little misunderstanding-prone, hurriedly corrected himself, “Bah. No, that’s not what I mean. Don’t overthink it, because I’m straight! Purely, absolutely, incurably straight!”

“I think you’ve lost count of the number of boys you’ve dallied with these years, haven’t you?” queried He Zheng.

“How dare I do that? My elder sister would have broken my legs. I just want a little excitement occasionally, nothing more,” mumbled Qin Huai under his breath. He Zheng couldn’t be bothered to make a reply to him. He wanted this matter settled as soon as possible.

The four of them stood before Liu Lanxue’s body. Nobody knew when, but Tun Shanhai had returned and was lying on the ground, looking meek and docile.

He Zheng twisted his head around and inquired of Li Zong, “Can you see the black gas?”

“Yeah.” In a bland voice, Li Zong gave an answer to the question that had been puzzling He Zheng and Zu Zhichong. “The Yin Yang Eyes are like a bridge between yin and yang. No soul, ghost Qi or demonic Qi escapes it.”

“Is it ghost Qi that’s over Liu Lanxue, by any chance? Why did I not find any on any of the other bodies in here?”

“Liu Lanxue’s soul is already gone. You cannot see her soul. Her soul has perished, so naturally there’s no ghost Qi remaining in her. It’s demonic Qi resulted from the deal with a demon.”

Zu Zhichong and He Zheng briefly froze at the same time. Zu Zhichong could be regarded as a fairly experienced man who had seen it all. The moment he’d walked inside, he had indeed sensed that there was something not quite right with Liu Lanxue’s body. He had also considered the possibility that someone had extracted Liu Lanxue’s soul to make a deal with some demon, but he hadn’t thought that Liu Lanxue’s soul had perished.

“Then where did Liu Lanxue’s soul go to? Did it vanish the same way Xu Tianhao’s soul did?”

Li Zong lightly touched the middle of Liu Lanxue’s forehead with his finger. He Zheng didn’t know whether or not it was a hallucination, but he saw a tiny flame pop out of Li Zong’s fingertip and with that the black gas over Liu Lanxue’s body, like natural gas ignited by a lighted match, instantly started churning and in the end disappeared.

“What did you do?” He Zheng furrowed his brow.

“Nothing.” Li Zong rubbed his fingers. Suddenly, his eyes rested on Qin Huai. “Let’s go and see your niece. Eventually you’ll need her to supplement the information you know.”

In Qin family.

The eldest daughter of Qin family, face full of weariness, traipsed out of the room. Her younger daughter possessed by a ghost had finally fallen asleep and was quiet now, which was something she hadn’t done quite often lately, and which made the eldest daughter of Qin family heave a deep sigh of relief.

But what she didn’t know was that at this moment, Zhao Yao inside the bedroom curled up beneath the quilt and was uncontrollably trembling all over, biting her thumb.

Zhao Yao was terribly scared. She could never forget those scenes replaying themselves again and again in her head like trotting horse lamp (a lantern adorned with a revolving circle of paper figures).

The whole thing started on the night Xu Tianhao was given a detention.

Zhao Yao and Xu Tianhao were from equally wealthy families. Though Xu Tianhao didn’t do well at school and was a bad student in their class, he was very fond of sports, had great taste in clothes, and was also taller and more handsome than those bookworms in their class. On first acquaintance, Zhao Yao and Xu Tianhao struck each other as “the right type”. The two of them had been dating for half a year.

On that night, Xu Tianhao was given a detention by the new teacher assigned to their class, whose name was Liu Lanxue. Zhao Yao didn’t know why, but Haozi (Xu Tianhao’s nickname) seemed to loathe their new teacher. When the last self-study session was over, she wanted to leave the teaching building with Haozi, but he asked her to go first.

Zhao Yao waited for a while at the front gate of the school but Xu Tianhao didn’t come out. Since it was pitch-dark out there, she returned to the classroom, but unexpectedly, she saw Haozi quarreling with their teacher.

In fact, Haozi stealing the class fund was nothing in Zhao Yao’s eyes. She knew that Haozi disliked Liu Lanxue. Given his personality, of course he would do something.

What happened next was exactly what Zhao Yao had expected. She took it for granted that students like them were different from common people, and if Haozi easily gave in to a female teacher, she would look down upon him.

Unsurprisingly, Liu Lanxue apologized to Haozi. Zhao Yao also remembered that Haozi had laughed very happily as he’d told her that Liu Lanxue had pitifully knelt down before him and admitted her mistakes in the presence of the principal and Mrs. Xu.

“Ha ha. Yaoyao, you have no idea how pathetic that stupid cunt was. She’s like a whore who wants a chastity archway. She acts like a devoted teacher, but you see, the moment the principal threatened to fire her, she got scared and was willing to do anything.”

Originally Zhao Yao hadn’t had many opinions on this matter, but after hearing Xu Tianhao’s scornful tone, she felt that this was a little beyond the pale, so she remarked, “Enough. Why are you being so mean? She’s already apologized to you. Just let it go.”

“Alas, don’t be mad. Okay, okay. I promise this is the end of it.”

Thus Zhao Yao put this matter behind her.
