A Necromancer's Journey

Chapter 4 - Choosing a Sect

Deciding to wait, Seth went over the list of sects in his hand. The kids around him were also reading the list of sects.

The list was massive, though it was enchanted to fit on a small paper. After spending about ten minutes looking through the list (taking special note of the schools that teach the darkness and fire path) a priest came into the room.

"Quiet down, everyone. Each sect on the list has a representative here waiting for their new classmates. Choose wisely, you will not have this chance so readily again. Those of you who'd rather stay home can leave now." the priest's old and hoarse voice sounded.

A few people stood up to leave, but many stayed, their parents had clearly told them how important this is. Seth followed the crowd towards the backyard of the church, hundreds of sect representatives stood closely together waiting for their new classmates.

Thinking for a while, Seth decided to choose the sect 'Deathly Hallows'. Partially because of the name, though he obviously wouldn't admit that, and partially because it specialized in the darkness and spirit path.

Walking towards the sign for the sect, he saw a cute redheaded girl with light freckles and green eyes standing next to the sign. She was clearly the sect representative. Behind her stood two boys and one girl, the boy being a black-haired boy with long hair, brown eyes, and a sharp nose while the girls were both brunettes and appeared to be identical twins with matching clothing and brown eyes with a bit of yellow in them.

"You're here to join the sect?" The girl asked

"Get in line, the event is almost over."

Silently nodding, Seth walked to the back of the line. The others were uncharacteristically silent for their age group. Seth couldn't help but wonder rather something had happened before he got there.

Not long after the girl pulled out a light blue crystal and said a few words and a giant bird appeared.

"Get on, we're not far from the sect."

Seth took one last glance around the church and found that most of the kids had found a sect. An occasional panicked child running to a random sect could be seen. After getting on, the bird quickly took off, nearly knocking him off.

The bird was blue and about 65 feet long with a width of around 40 feet. Seth was sure it looked like a mini hill traveling through the sky. There was plenty of room for their small group.

Around three hours later they reached the sect (quite a distance given the speed that the bird was traveling). After arriving, the redheaded girl quickly told them to get off the bird and the bird started to shrink before returning to its crystal form. A few people walked up to them and told them to follow them before taking them on a twenty-minute walk through a sea of mist. When they finally arrived before the gates of the sect, Seth noticed a troll guarding the door.

"What's the password?" The troll said, its deep voice coming out as more of a growl.

"Silence, my brother." One of the men replied.

The doors slowly swung open and the sect was revealed. Seth couldn't help but be amazed, and the other children were in shock as well.

The sect was entirely silver (not in color, actual silver). The men clearly used to this as they let out a short chuckle before explaining that silver is a great conductor for magic and having everything made of silver (beds and equipment excluded, of course) the wards of the sect had an easier time controlling everything.

Continuing forward, the children were eventually led to a room inside a large house with the title 'Application Office'.

Here the nearby kids finally began to speak.

"That crazy bitch! How dare she put a silencing curse on us!" The boy yelled.

"Quiet down," One of the twins replied, "You wouldn't want anyone to hear you, right?"

After talking for a while Seth found that the twins were named Francine and Mirabell while the boy was named John. The four quickly became friends as they talked about why they chose the sect and about their family.

"Wow, your father is the Rudolphus Morningstar!" Francine exclaimed at one point.

"You're so lucky!" John said excitedly.

After talking for around fifteen minutes someone came to the reception area and walked them towards separate rooms where an acolyte was waiting for them.

"You're Seth morningstar, correct? You're the one with high talent in fire, darkness, and spirit?" The young voice of the acolyte asked.

"Indeed," Said Seth, "May I ask what we're doing here?"

"You're here to confirm your talent and identity. After the first test, it becomes a lot easier to detect someone's talent. All you have to do is touch this orb." Said the boy (seemingly around fourteen years old).

Touching the orb, Seth felt a tiny prick on his finger and the orb went red, silver, and black.

"Excellent. You'll randomly be assigned a free class tomorrow, but classes after that are going to cost you. For now, I'll lead you to your quarters."

The sect clearly didn't care for etiquette as Seth found himself in a house together with Francine, Mirabell, and John. Sighing to himself, Seth quickly got into his bed and fell asleep. He has a big day tomorrow, after all.

As the morning arrived Seth found himself being awoken by a banging on the door. Quickly waking up, Seth found everyone around just as confused as him before they heard a voice call out to them.

"Hurry up! It's time to select your classes."

Everyone hurriedly got up and walked towards the door before gently opening it and walking outside. As they were led towards a building in the distance they couldn't help but talk amongst themselves in excitement.

Arriving at the building, they were once again separated as they arrived before different acolytes that lead them towards a room.

As he reached the room, Seth looked inside to find it to be a small room with a silver table and two chairs with dice and a piece of paper on the table.

"Roll the dice, your number will decide your first class."
