A World Of Decree: And The Seven Laws

Chapter 36 - Friendly duel

The rest of the week had gone by without any more disturbing news. Laena and Faibel were out completing a guild mission while the rest slept in. Fridays usually didn't have any morning classes around the school, only a few afternoon and late night study sessions hosted by some of the professors.

Calvin and Mooks were together in his office, discussing some private affairs when Atlas and Leo suddenly walked in without a knock.

"What's up Calvin!" Leo waved as he came in.

"Good morning. And next time please knock on my door." Calvin's morning voice was still rusty. It was obvious he didn't get much sleep last night.

"What brings the two of you here so early on a friday morning?' Mooks asked with a calm tone.

Leo was the first to speak up, "Any news on the enchantment? Any borderless missions we can take? Nothing's happening."

Mooks glared at him for a moment before speaking, analyzing Leo from head to toe. "The enchantment will take a few more weeks. No news on anything else. And I believe a drastically hard mission will pop up within the next couple weeks." He turned to Calvin, "Osiris has awoken Oryx."

Calvin nearly spat out his morning cup of coffee he was sipping on. "Are you crazy! Why are you saying this in front of them?"

"I have made up my mind. There is no reason to hide information from them any more. We should tell them everything we know."

It took longer than expected for Mooks to convince Calvin, but in the end he agreed. They ended up sharing that Oryx has been brought back from slumber by Osiris. Oryx is an incredibly powerful dragon who's been sleeping for over 150 years beneath the sea. Mooks wasn't sure of Osiris was the one to bring Oryx back, but it was the only conclusion he could make from the given events.

Mooks was one of the most intelligent beings in Hovaria, having a record for being correct 99% of the time. He told them about Osiris, who was cursed upon by an ancient demon from the unknown. This curse made him a monster, a truly powerful human who was dealt with a few decades ago. Mooks doesn't know how he came back, nor does he know if he's truly alive. However, Mooks does know that the students aren't safe, and only time will tell what happens.

Atlas looked puzzled, unsure of how to comprehend the situation, "Then why don't you guys or the Bureau go stop him or something? Doesn't the Bureau have the strongest magic users in the country?"

Calvin leaned back in his chair, taking another sip of his coffee, "Yes and No. Plus we don't know where Osiris or Oryx are hiding if they are truly out there. Besides, Princewood ss guarded more heavily than some of the prisons in this country. Everything will be dealt with."

"What's his power level?" Leo asked with a little excitement.

Calvin scratched his chin for a moment, "Somewhere around 15,000-20,000 most likely. Oryx however…" He paused, "30,000 if we're lucky."

Leo's slight bit of excitement vanished without a trace. He sunk into his seat, and swallowed a clump of slight fear down his throat. "I don't even know if I want to hear mine now…"

"Yours is about 3,089. I can use detect quite easily." Calvin showed his underwhelming support, "Which is about a dozen times greater than the average sophomore at Princewood. The seven of you acquired a tremendous amount of magic from Abbadon last year." He took another sip of his coffee. "Tell the others about what we discussed this morning. They'll need to know as well."

Atlas and Leo nodded, heading out the door after a few more school-related questions. As the door shut behind them, Mooks turned to Calvin with a confused look, "They sure like to barge in a lot."

"Tell me about it." Calvin finished his coffee with a sigh of relief.

Atlas and Leo decided to head towards one of the Arenas to practice a bit. They've been quite busy this week, not being able to have a normal guy chat since last school year. They headed into Arena 12, an Arena made of polished dement and nothing but clear skies.

There were only two colors in the arena: yellow and blue. The sky above was as clear as it can possibly be, and the ground below as sturdy and smooth as a renewed road. A perfect place for not only space, but to catch each other's voices in the free air.

They headed towards the elevator; the easiest transportation confinement in the entire school. After saying the number of the arena to the enigma, the doors swung open immediately, bringing them to their destination.

Once they stepped onto the hardened ground, they saw profesor Hellsgate standing in the middle with another student. It seemed as if he gave the student a bright smile, sending them off towards the small silver handles below them to rift out of the Arena.

The elevator already disappeared behind them, so Atlas and Leo approached the Professor cautiously.

"Mr. Bright and Mr. Embers! What a wonderful surprise." The professor greeted them in his cool voice. "What brings you into the arenas today?" He tweaked his head a bit and broadened his smile.

"Oh.. Hello professor Hellsgate, we were just going to get some practice in if that's okay?" Atlas slowly declined his volume as he stared deep into the professor's eyes. If evil had a look, Atlas could see it deep within his soul.

"Please, please. Call me Alastor." His voice became more clear, still sounding cool. "I do hope you don't mind me observing you two, yes? It would be my utmost p.l.e.a.s.u.r.e to see some fine students spar in a friendly brawl."

Atlas and Leo looked at each other in unison, simultaneously shrugging their shoulders as to, "Eh, why not?"

They took their stance against each other, agreeing to begin as Alastor gave them the signal to go.

"Begin!" Alastor echoed his voice through the air, signaling the beginning of the match.

Leo quickly snapped both his fingers to produce a flash of sparks in each hand. Those sparks instantaneously rose into bright flames that filled a large chunk of space within a few seconds around him. Leo stood in the center of his bonfire, preparing to hurl it at Atlas.

Atlas could see Leo wasn't holding back, deciding to give him the same treatment. He didn't know how to attack, deciding to wait for Leo to launch his.

Leo swiftly swung both his hands towards Atlas, sending the massive wave of bright flames at tremendous speed towards the boy.

Over the summer, Atlas learned a few things about his magic he hadn't known before. First, he realized his magic revolves around creating pressure, solely built upon amplifying the direction of his d.e.s.i.r.ed action. Second, he realized he could physically amplify the pressure of almost anything he had control over. This meant that Atlas could even augment a breath of air from his lungs into a massive gust of wind if he d.e.s.i.r.ed to do so. The problem is that he hasn't had enough practice with it, or built upon the strength to allow him to do such challenging tasks.

As the flame approached Atlas, he decided to attempt amplifying the air that would drag along with his hands while swinging them. From the sides of his body, he forcefully clapped both his hands together in front of him. During the swing, he simultaneously yelled, "Augment!" with the direction of the clap.

This not only amplified the air that he swung through, but also the sound of the clap itself. Within a millisecond of time, the flames instantly vanished as the air erased them from existence. Originally, there was no wind in the Arena. However, a small sandstorm quickly formed from Atlas's spell as it lifted all the small specks of dust and particles off the smooth floor beneath them. All the dust hurled itself into the open air and extinguished the flames like water.

The storm settled down quite rapidly, along with the massive exertion of wind from the spell. Leo was nearly knocked over on the ground while Alastor looked more than intrigued.

Leo slowly picked himself off the floor, "Wow Atlas. When did you get this-"

"An absolute wonderful performance!" Alastor interrupted them as he walked over, giving Leo a pat on the back from the dust stuck to his shirt. "You two sure are an impressive set of students. It is no wonder to me that Calvin Pride is your guild advisor."

"Thanks Professor." Atlas and Leo replied in unison. However, Leo was still fazed by Atlas's growth over the past couple months. He was dying to find out his power level.

"My, my. I'll make sure to stop by his office later and let him know how wonderful you two were!" His grin widened to a more creepy level, sending slight chills down their spines.

"Professo-. I mean Alastor," Leo obliged to his requests from before, "How do you know Calvin? Like, outside of Princewood..."

Alastor's grin faded, masked by a deathly blank stare. "My, my. Curious are we now?" His grin returned, "You should get going now," He leaned in close to Leo's face, "Before I change my mind."
