A World Of Decree: And The Seven Laws

Chapter 44 - An Unexpected Guest

In the midst of a Friday afternoon, classes were beginning to settle down, preparing for the long weekend ahead. A holiday would take its place on Monday, cancelling all scheduled classes for that day.

Faibel had spent all night studying the Index, learning the placement of every word from back to cover. He spent most of his time studying the Curses and Fusion, disappointed by the lack of information he found on Fusion type spells.

All he found was basic information he could have dug up in the library or perhaps ask one of the professors. However, he did find something unique that peaked his interest.

Fusion spells have the ability of mending together two different sets of magic. It's not something an ordinary magic user will ever achieve, but there have been rare occasions. What Faibel found was the link between two sets of magic depending on the person's mood and intent.

A bond that keeps a person's sanity in place, but rips them apart as time goes on. It wasn't exactly his situation, but he had no idea such things even existed.

In the open halls of the third wing on the second floor, all of Endless Sun walked towards the direction of the outside Garden. It was a relaxing place most students found peaceful and elegant.

The narrow pathways intertwined between freshly sprouted vegetables and colorful fruits gave off a feeling of warmth and comfort. Benches and tables were firmly planted just far enough apart that different groups can find their own peaceful silence in the garden. Besides, it was finally warm enough to enjoy the outdoors in the depths of the September days.

The garden was maintained well enough for the vegetation to subdue on the first snowfalls. Professor Crane kept a goodeye on the garden, using her magic to prolong the life of the plants.

"So there's 12 Curses in total?" Paris asked as they took another turn down the last hallway.

"Yes." Faibel answered. "Osiris has the Curse of Command. It allows him to fully track and control any living being he leaves his mark on."

Atlas gulped, hit with a realization about his mother and the yellow mark on her shoulder. Alongside all the students that have been corrupted as well, laying under constant surveillance in the medical department.

Faibel was about to say something else when a sudden scream from outside caught everyone's attention. They rushed quick towards the end of the hall, bursting through to the garden to see the commotion.

The first thing they say was a girl and her friends looking in the sky above, faces filled with nothing but horror and confusion. They all looked up, not believing what they were seeing.

A colossal dragon rode the clouds like waves, roaring like thunder from above. The dragon's scales were blistered blue, outlined by a matte clack on each edge. The aura emitting from the beast could be felt by every student and professor at the Academy, sending everyone to nearby windows or any place able to glance above.

Rina's attention suddenly switched from above to below when her necklace started to give off a faint glow from within. The white miasma within the dragon's heart lit up around her c.h.e.s.t, shifting her focus once again onto the dragon.

Although she wasn't sure, there was no denying the gaze the dragon held onto her. She could feel those yellow eyes stare deep into her soul, almost like they found what they were looking for.

She gripped the necklace tightly into her hand, and stared back at the beast with confidence.

In Calvin's office, Mooks and Calvin glared through a window onto the dragon. It flew back and forth a few times while making growls and howling at the Academy until it finally flew away to the east.

"I'm going after it." Calvin said without looking at Mooks. "It's after Rina, there's no doubt about it."

"You could, but you won't win against Oryx alone." Mooks gawked at the beast flying away. "Just because you and Violet killed Azimore, doesn't mean Oryx will be easier. They are brothers, but Oryx was always stronger."

"That I cannot deny, but all I need is a scale, nothing more."

"Hmm," Mooks scratched his ear, "I'll go with you, but I won't help."

Calvin looked at him confidently, "Very well. Let's go."

Calvin and Mooks waited until Oryx got a reasonable distance away from the school to not drag any attention onto them. Besides, there was no way they could fight or attack Oryx in the middle of the sea surrounding the Academy.

Going east, a few dozen miles away was the closest landmark away from Princewood. It was nothing but trees and hilltops that stretched for miles upon end before civilization, giving it the perfect battle ground for such a monstrous creature.

Mooks and Calvin could both use teleportation, but traveling such a long distance with a mere spell drained their magic stores drastically, meaning only one would be able to fight to their full potential.

Clavin grabbed Mooks' paw, and they were off to the east with a quickly distortion of light. Calvin was prepared to face the consequences of his actions, but he couldn't allow Oryx to get away unscathed.

They arrived in the woods as Oryx was flying over them, leaving Calvin little time to prepare or think of a possible attack.

"You're on your own. Aries." Mooks looked at Calvin with a wry grin.

Calvin shrugged him off, looked above, and prepared his inner concentration for combat. However, he only needed to land one successful attack, strong enough to pierce through the dense scales.

Mooks stepped back, seeing Calvin form small particles of white light between his hands. It took a few seconds for the particles to expand into much larger forces of blue and white light, stopping their expansion just outside his finger tips.

He joined all the particles together into one hand, and caulked it back as if he were about to throw a ball into the sky. "Star of Aries!" Calvin yelled as he released the acc.u.mulation of particles in his hand towards the dragon in the distance.

The mass of particles expanded up to ten times its original size, hurling through the open air immensely. The speed of the particles flew over the treeline, dragging it along with assistance from the wind.

Calvin's markings around his neck lit up along with his eyes, watching Oryx take the hit from afar. The spell collided with the back of Oryx's tail, dimming the sky into an abyssal black with the massive explosion of particles.

However, Oryx only seemed to let out a screech of pain, and nothing more. Something fell from the body of the Dragon, but neither Mooks or Calvin had far enough eyesight to see what it was.

Oryx would've turned around and easily fought back, perhaps even demolished Mooks and Calvin with a single breath, but he had orders to follow, and a leader to obey.

As the two of them watched Oryx disappear into the horizon, they traveled further towards the east in search of what had fallen. It didn't take long to find considering the massive crater in the ground created from the blast.

Calvin bent down in the beaten soil, seeing a pointy blue edge sticking out of the surface. A few brushes and a small blow of air filtered the dirt off of it. Stretching only 6 inches long and 4 inches wide, the slightly curved scale glimmered from the sunlight.

"Out of the very few chances you had of success, it seemed to pay off." Mooks walked over with a blank expression.

"Although I have my suspicions with him, Alastor will know how to track down Oryx with this." Calvin hid the scale deep within his jacket pocket, making sure to scrub any last pieces of dirt he might of missed in the process.

"You used one of the Zodiac spells." Mooks questioned, "Will you have enough magic to bring us back?"

Calvin's marks began to glow once more, "Yes," He held out his hand, "Let's go."
