A World Of Decree: And The Seven Laws

Chapter 49 - The Broken Battlefield

The night began with excitement and fear; a thrill of two powerful emotions, colliding together to create an unforgettable moment. The blissful winds of night swept the ground like dust on a shelf. The gentle breeze gave a colder feel to the scene, but not enough to shiver from the absence of heat.

Alastor led everyone to Princewood's dock, located at the north edge of the island. Two large boats were stationed on one of the edges, looking as if they weren't even close to ready for sail. However, a much smaller, older looking boat was stationed on the other side, only about the size of a couple classrooms put together. There was no sail, no wheel, and no feeling of safety. Broken wood and gaping holes were splattered all over, and yet Alastor hopped on like he was stepping on a massive cruise ship.

His grin reappeared in his face, "What are you waiting for?"

Cartuja jumped on, rocking the boat from the giant leap he took. Faibel, Atlas and Laena followed right behind him, being much more careful than he was.

After Mooks leaped on, Alastor cut the rope that connected the boat to the dock, and slowly began to watch as the boat drifted into the open sea. "Take your seats, this'll be a bumpy ride." Alastor walked towards the stern, gently waving his hand towards the water right behind it. His eyes seemed to glimmer, and the water began to bubble fiercely beneath the boat. After a few moments, the boat seemed to pick up it's speed, and soon enough, they were soaring through the nightly calm waters like birds in the sky.

Alastor made sure the boat was at full speed, and sat back down to join the rest. "Does anyone have any guesses as to why I asked four second-year students to come along with me on this… Expedition?"

He waited for any replies to come, only being greeted by splashes of cold waves being lifted by the speed of the boat. The wind whistled in his ears like a harmony, breaking the silence he was accustomed to.

"Many years ago, I met the seven deadly sins. They looked no different from you and I." Alastor started, "But their hearts lacked what humans call: emotions. Their hatred and regret overpowered them, only wanting chaos to spread across our world. The sin of Wrath, was the strongest of them all at the time, broke his own sin."

"Although he begged for Mercy, Lucifer didn't take kindly to his act, sending him off to purgatory for eternity. That is, until just a dozen years ago or so, a new sin stepped onto Lucifer's board game. His name was Draymond Bright. The only sin I've ever seen that still had his human emotions in place."

Faibel quickly realized what Alastor just said, nearly falling off the boat from his sudden alertness, "Bright?! You can't possibly mean.."

Alastor's smile reappeared on his face, "My my, what did I do to get such a fabulous student?" He chuckled, "Draymond Bright is Atlas' father."

Rina's stomach dropped, "D-Does he know?"

"Yes. I told his mother to tell him the truth. So no that you know, this leads me back to our current situation. I wanted to see if the four of you are truly the destined laws of our universe. Atlas, Leo, and Paris have already proved themselves to me. You four however, have not."

"Prove ourselves to you?! Who do you think we are? We don't have to prove anything!" Laena suddenly screamed, which was unusual for her.

Alastor broke out into a sea of laughter, "Ah! But you do. Because if you truly are the Laws... The amount of power you hold," His expression grew dark, "some would slaughter countries for it."

A dim silence fell across the boat once again. The waves continued to splash on the deck, and the wind continued to whistle in their ears.

"You are indeed correct. Proving yourself to me does nothing. But I am here for the four of you to prove yourselves to you. Whether you are truly the laws or not, the task I've decided to give you is nearly impossible. Oryx's power level is 22,000. Out of you four, Faibel currently holds the highest power level since it's nighttime, but it's still far too below to even leave a mark."

"So what's your plan? Bring us to our deathbeds?" Rina asked sarcastically.

"I want to see what the four of you can accomplish on your own. When it seems like you've endured long enough, I'll intervene." Alastor gestured in a polite manner.

"And how exactly will you do that?" Laena asked nervously.

Mooks looked at him with a strong aura of examination, "Are you really going to tell them?"

Alastor remained quiet, waiting for someone to ask another question. Luckily, the boat seemed to stop before anyone could, prompting Alastor to turn around. "Seems like we're here." He stood up slowly, "Welcome to Oryx's Layer, or as I like to call it, the Devil's nest."

Alastor raised his hands while muttering something under his breath, lighting rough edges of rocks and broken sh.i.p.s sticking from the water in brilliant flames. The light emitting from the flames was scorchingly bright, making view of the layer before them.

Nothing but rocks, broken sh.i.p.s and lost adventures peaked from the water. The moonlight reflecting from the calm waters made a colossus cave come into view, along with two yellow eyes inside it. They glimmered fiercely in the darkness of the cave, appearing closer and closer with every step.

Soon enough, Oryx stepped out of his slumber, greeting his guests with a vigorous roar of power. His blue scales looked meticulous along with Alastor's flames of red and orange around the nest. Two great wings of darkness presented themselves, along with sharp claws the size of humans clasping against boulders of harnden rubble. Oryx's jaw layed rows of white teeth in every direction, releasing a trivial amount of heat into the air and creating a small midst of fof along his head.

Laena shivered with fear where she stood, turning to Mooks beside her, "C-Can I go back. I don't want t-to be here…"

"Nonsense," Alastor wrapped his arm around her shoulders. "You'll be fine. You're in charge of making sure no one gets hurt. Me, you and Mooks will stand on the sidelines! Also, I will grant you the favor of a single spell, meaning at whatever time you d.e.s.i.r.e urgent help, I will cast a spell for your assistance."

"Whatever," Cartuja yawned, "Let's get this over with." He hopped onto a rock beside the boat, stretching his back dramatically.

Faibel gave his glasses to Laean, making sure she kept the safe while he fights. Rina on the other hand, started running across the water towards the right, a feat only she possessed, making the battlefield easy to maneuver for her. She pulled out her necklace from underneath her shirt as Oryx watched, "You want it?" Her face grew with confidence and excitement, "Come and get it!?"

Oryx locked eyes with her, letting out another devastating roar. The howl disrupted the calm waters, sending waves rushing in every direction.

Back on the boat, Alastor stared down the broken battlefield in front of him while making sure Laena was listening, "Do you know the real reason I brought you out here, Laena?"

Laena kept her eyes on her friends, nervously answering Alastor's question, "Uhm… I'm sorry professor. I don't know."

"It wasn't to prove yourselves. I wanted to expose you three to death."

Laena's heart skipped a beat, slowly rising as she waited for his explanation.

"You four need to be exposed to what it feels like to die. Not necessarily literally, but more of an experience per say. The three of them have a 7% of victory, most likely they'll slip up and be faced with a split moment where death is all they will see."

"Being apart of the Seven Laws doesn't mean you will have it easy. At some points in the future you will be faced with death. That I am sure of."

Laena's heart rate began to slow down as she surprisingly began to understand, "So you want us to have already experienced a near death experience. Therefore, when it comes again, we'll be ready, and we won't be afraid."

Alastor broke his attention and glared at Laena with a sinful grin, "My My, you're smarter than you look."

Laean stepped forward, raising her hands towards her three friends and closed her eyes. She concentrated for a moment, and let out the only spell she knew to help them, "HOLY LIGHT!"

An white miasma began to glow around Faibel, Cartuja and Laena. A feeling of comfort engulfed them, giving them the support they needed.

"Holy Light huh?" Alastor scratched his chin, "How did you come about such a spell?"

"It came to me in a dream, from my father." Laena panted as she tried to regain her breath.

"Light magic always fascinated me, especially the spells it can produce." He studied the recipients of the spell for a moment, gaining a look of amazement in the process. "My my, seems like you increased their physical strength, defense, awareness, speed, and agility. There aren't many spells that can do that, Laena."

"Thank you professor, but I haven't practiced it enough. They only have about 20 or so minutes before it wears off."

Alastor placed a hand next to his mouth, "YOU HEAR THAT! 10 MINUTES! MAKE EM COUNT."

Alastor cleared his throat once more, "Seems like their power levels are much higher… I'd say their chance of victory is 18%."

"CARTUJA! RINA! FAIBEL!" Laena screamed, "YOU CAN DO IT! SHOW THAT DRAGON WHO WE REALLY ARE!"

Cartuja cracked his neck as he felt the effect of the spell within him, drawing a malicious grin on his face, "With p.l.e.a.s.u.r.e."
