40 – Toughness before the war (4)

There was a TV broadcast in which viewers in their preschool years sent questions they were curious about in their present life, and then experimented and showed them whatever the contents were.

If you put Mentos in Coke and shoot it like a water rocket, it will fly well, can a person swim naked to cross the Han River, and if you order jajangmyeon on a bus, they will deliver it to you.

It was a broadcast that vicariously satisfies all kinds of curiosity, but among them, this was the most memorable attempt.

How far will a person disguised as a policeman follow if he asks a good citizen he met on the street to do something stupid like push-ups?

As a kindergartener, I just laughed at it, but now that I think about it, it was a very surprising development.

This is because when a PD pretending to be a police officer made a citizen perform movements such as jumping with arms open, jumping rabbits, and push-ups, most people did so without raising any objection.

What if it was a world where the authority of the high-ranking people was really strong because of the class system?

If you make good use of the situation of war and the weapon of status, you will be able to feed the Czechs in an amazing way.

While I was organizing my thoughts like that, a soldier who was reconnaissance on horseback about an hour ahead of the detached main unit came back and said.

“Major, if you walk for about an hour from here, you will find Sylph Village.”

As soon as I heard that, I ordered the detached team to stop and said.

“Everyone get off your horses except me and Captain Werner. And from now on, we will be disguised as food requisition troops belonging to Czechia, and we will pretend that the horses you rode are used to pull the wagons. If you act confidently, you won’t be caught, so go ahead with the idea of putting a steel plate on your face.”

Then we started acting like we were part of Czechoslovakia and approached the men standing guard at the entrance to the village and said:

“I am Lieutenant Marek Nowotny belonging to the supply unit of the 7th Division of the Army of the Principality of Czechia! I’m here to requisition insufficient food on my way to intercept the Reich Imperial Army that invaded Vysochia, so guide me to where the village chief is!”

Then the men looked at us suspiciously, but sighed as if they couldn’t help it.

“I see, Lieutenant. Then follow me.”

“Guide me quickly. The way to go is urgent.”

**

When I arrived in front of the village chief’s house guided by a man, a man with white hair appeared, wearing clothes made of clean cloth.

As soon as he saw us, he knelt down and asked in a very cautious manner.

“I heard that you came from the supply unit. However, according to what we received a few months ago, I understand that there is some time left before the requisition…”

Unless the Czechs were fools, they would of course have given notice of the deadline for requisitioning food while building a large army.

When the village chief sees me appearing much earlier than expected, he has no choice but to be suspicious.

So there is a possibility of getting caught doing something wrong, but just in case of this, I have dozens of fake certificates made in the form of Czech Republic official documents while I was in Bruno Castle.

But I said it like a rhyme first before showing it.

“I fully understand your feelings of embarrassment. But things don’t go very well. Of course, it’s not a story that the army of the Principality of Czechia will lose, but it seems that the evil Reich Empire’s army will attack faster than expected. That’s why an order has been given to prepare food in advance in case the war draws on quickly.”

When I said that, the village chief nodded his head slightly, doubting whether he agreed with my words.

“Is that so? If so, could you give us a certificate just in case? don’t you know? If you don’t have a certificate when you are requisitioned, it could be a problem later…”

It would be unimaginable for a single village chief to mention a ‘problem’ to an aristocrat of the rank of lieutenant.

However, since the issue of supplying troops during a war is not something to be easily overlooked, his request to issue a conscription certificate is quite natural, even if this is a medieval fantasy world full of discrimination and absurdities based on the caste system. If you don’t listen to this, you’ll get suspicious.

So I showed him the fake certificate I had made in the Czech Republic’s official form and said.

“Here are the papers. Let’s check it out.”

“thank you.”

After a while, the village chief said with a very sorry expression, probably thinking that the documents I showed him were real.

“Sorry, no matter how important this is, I acted like I was suspicious of the lieutenant.”

“No. It is good for each other to be sure. So, how much food is prepared? Also we couldn’t bring a wagon. I want to rent a wagon or cart in town. Would that be possible?”

Hearing this, the village head recalled his eyes of suspicion once more, but he judged that he could not protest further against me, who was borrowing the authority of public power.

The village chief answered me honestly.

“Originally, we tried to kill cows, sheep, and even pigs and offer them fresh meat and bread. Usually, before the conscript officer comes, the officials contact us first to give us time to prepare, but as you know, in this case… What we can give right now is 2 tons of wheat flour and 2 tons of barley flour, which we intend to eat in the winter. There are things like prepared cheeses, cured meats, and sausages. Also, if you mobilize all the carts in the village, you will be able to load them all, so borrow them. Instead, please write properly only on the certificate…”

I’m not a Czech, I’m a soldier of the Reich Empire, and the certificate is fake, but the village chief can easily write as much information as he wants.

So, thinking in my mind of the Czech Republic soldiers who would starve because they had run out of food, I wrote down the certificate to give to the village chief and the certificate I was going to take, and handed it over.

“Is it done now? I will support my soldiers, and you mobilize the villagers to load the prepared food.”

“All right. So, are you planning to stay here tonight?”

Just because I was staying here for the night, as long as I showed the certificate to the village chief in front of me, he wouldn’t easily suspect me and my men.

However, since you never know when and where a lie can be discovered, you have to be careful, and you also have to use that time to stop by at least one more village to get food by impersonating an officer of the enemy country.

“Don’t let your heart take it. Hurry up instead.”

Perhaps the village chief didn’t like me and the other soldiers staying in the village even for a night, so when I said I was going quickly, he replied with a slightly brighter expression.

“I will do as you command.”

In this way, the people of Silph Village and the soldiers of the detached corps loaded about 6 tons of food on 10 wagons over about 2 hours.

Even though I had already completely fooled the village chief and others, I had to worry about the thought that I might be found out.

However, in the end, we succeeded in robbing 50,000 soldiers of 2 to 1 day’s worth of food without being discovered by the serfs.

**

Around 3 hours after leaving town.

The soldiers of the detached unit started chatting with each other in cheerful voices, probably thinking that they would not have to worry about being found out anymore.

“Sergeant Lyle, are we really robbing you?”

“Can’t you believe it when you see it with your own eyes? Are you sick? get out How can a new recruit live with so much suspicion?”

“Today, I’m going to grease the boat for the first time in a while. There’s no such thing as beef or pork, but there’s a lot of sausage and cheese… I’m salivating just thinking about it.”

The other officers who saw it and Laura tried to tell her to be quiet to remind her that this place was the enemy.

It was rare to send a scout to a place that was at least 2-3 weeks away from the enemy on foot, and it was necessary to relieve the stress of the soldiers who were physically and mentally exhausted while serving as a detached unit.

I restrained the officers who were trying to stop the chatter and spoke loudly.

“Everyone pay attention!”

At those words, everyone’s attention turned to me at once.

“Considering your hard work, this battalion commander is going to rest here until the night without marching any more today. What do you all think?”

To my proposal, both the officers and soldiers showed their fierce agreement with their eyes.

“good. Then today we can eat, drink, and enjoy the daily rations bestowed upon us by His Highness, the Duke of Czechia! However, from tomorrow, I have to go to another village and shake it like this again, so I try not to drink alcohol. Got it?”

At that, the soldiers and officers said in unison.

“Yes, I understand!”

“Okay, then everyone gather trees and leaves around. Next time, let’s light a fire with magic and eat and drink to our heart’s content!”

And as I instructed, we ate and drank and rested for the rest of the day.

The horses were also fed unmilled barley to replenish their stamina.

And just before leaving the next day, they burned all the food they had gathered with the cart and started the forced march again.

While calculating the speed of the enemy’s march, he repeated the same method of robbing, resting, and burning the village’s food.

That’s how we succeeded in robbing 9 villages with a little overdoing it.

Lastly, in the village where the village was located, food and oil were requisitioned so that they could prepare for a fun prank.

Just in time, a soldier from the detached unit I ordered to patrol returned and reported.

“I have a report, the enemy advance unit is about an hour away from us!”

Then it’s time to start pranking.
