41 – Personality before the war (5)

Upon hearing the report, I cheered and said:

“Ohh~ that was good! Then, from now on, let’s go prepare for the final play with fire that will completely drain their minds! Is everyone ready?”

All the members of the detached corps answered my words with a loud voice.

“Yes, I am ready!”

“Just give me orders! I will burn everything!”

“I will trust and follow the battalion commander.”

The faces of those guys who said that were already full of expectations to play with the enemy one-sidedly.

As the leader leading them, I opened my mouth to answer that expectation.

“Then I will explain our operation. This time we are not going to take a very complex tactical action. Just spray oil in the woods near where you expect them to come, and lay in ambush with a barrel of oil. Then, when the enemy advance unit approaches, they will roll down the oil barrel, fire explosion magic and fire arrows to give the enemy a taste of fire, and then immediately retreat to join the Jaeger Battalion, the main unit of our advanced reconnaissance unit.”

It’s a much simpler operation than playing mock battles.

The content of the operation is only ‘sprinkling oil in the forest near the enemy’s expected passage, then ambushing it, and when they come, rolling the oil barrel and blowing it up, setting it on fire and splashing it’.

In order to carry out such a simple operation, our detached corps, which are high-end military personnel, said let’s fight against an incomparably larger number of enemies.

I think I should explain the proper reason, but Laura, who is already curious and has a lot of questions, poses a question on behalf of everyone.

“There is something I want to ask you, battalion commander.”

“Okay, allow it.”

“If the enemy’s advance unit didn’t notice us, wouldn’t it be better to use this opportunity to attack them with fire and surprise?”

If you take the risk, you might be able to surprise them directly like Laura said.

If we succeed in doing so, we can earn a reputation for showing bravery by striking the enemy’s vanguard with only 20 men.

It’s a strategy that any commander who is willing to sacrifice and doesn’t mind a bold operation can try it.

“It’s a good suggestion, but our detached unit has already succeeded in stealing food to be requisitioned by the enemy and making it useless. Therefore, the food ration of the army of the principality, which relies heavily on requisition, will be greatly reduced, and the soldiers will go hungry. It made morale and fighting power inevitably go down. In other words, we have already succeeded in weakening the enemy’s combat power.”

“It is as the battalion commander said.”

“In addition, we have valuable information that other reconnaissance teams have not secured, such as the size of the enemy force, morale, and distribution. However, if I get more greedy and attack the enemy directly and die, wouldn’t I lose it without even seeing that valuable information?”

After saying that, Laura began to nod as if she had realized something.

In addition, the officers belonging to the other detached units seemed to have the same question, and they began to mumble and agree.

“As the battalion commander said, if we fight, in the worst case, all of us could die here, and we would end up dying as dogs without even seeing the hard-earned information.”

“In other cases, they could be pursued by the cavalry behind them and run behind them.”

What they said is correct, but there is one more reason why I do not want to launch a direct attack on the enemy advance.

“Tell me honestly. In our current operation, it doesn’t matter if we can’t kill a single enemy. All we have to do is instill fear in them that they might be attacked by us anytime and anywhere.”

When I said this, all the officers looked shocked, but I continued to speak regardless.

“In the opinion of the Red Army commander, they are still marching inside the Principality of Czechia, so they must be marching comfortably with minimum vigilance. That way, the soldiers will be able to fight the allies while conserving their stamina.”

That’s also true in Europe, where you can cross the border in one minute on foot just by holding out your passport, like checking a bus ticket, thanks to internationalization and EU policies.

Most of the people living within the borders of France are French, and the majority of people living within the borders of Germany are German.

Even more so, in a fantasy world where open borders are not allowed even after death, it is common sense that even if a war is waged against an enemy country, the invading attacker bands together to prepare for danger.

Even if the enemy’s small units are roaming around, the basic unit is at least a battalion, and even then, when a large army of the allies comes nearby, they have to retreat to avoid being defeated individually.

If you don’t, you don’t know how you’ll be attacked.

Since there is such experience and wisdom left by our ancestors, all armies reduce the weight of vigilance in allied territories in order to preserve the physical strength of soldiers.

“However, once attacked, the enemy’s commanders and other high-ranking officials are embarrassed by unexpected situations and raise their alert level. If you don’t, you may be attacked by allies again.”

In addition, when a person encounters something unexpected, they receive a mental shock, and their judgment and intellectual abilities are temporarily lowered.

For example, a person who was dumped by a girlfriend whom he had a good relationship with on the day before the SAT is likely to fail the test because he or she is likely to make mistakes in questions that would have been easy to answer if he or she was in a normal state when taking the test.

Moreover, this is a battlefield where thousands and tens of thousands of lives are at stake due to a single mistake in judgment.

Even though it’s not a direct engagement, the damage they suffer from a wrong decision won’t be that great.

You can make something that you buy and suffer from.

“Then, the soldiers would have to go back and forth without sleeping well even at night, and they would have to spend all their energy searching for the non-existent enemy. At the same time, as the suffering increased, complaints about the commanders would pile up, so morale and stamina would plummet at the same time. Do you understand now?”

At that, the officers belonging to the detached unit nodded their heads and shot eyes at me saying, ‘It’s our major.’

“Then, as instructed, we begin preparations. It’s time to open the way to hell for them.”

**

An hour after the operation meeting of our detached unit, the advance unit of the Principality of Czechia.

Although he was in charge of identifying and reporting elements that could be dangerous by about four hours on foot ahead of the main forces of the Principality Army.

Captain Alex, the leader of this unit, wasn’t looking around so keenly.

High-ranking people could have said something when they saw him like that, but he also had something to make excuses for.

‘When going to enemy camps or dangerous places, a battalion commander or higher is sent as a precedent reconnaissance group, but seeing that I am only sent as a company commander, half of it means to confirm formally.’

Usually, when subordinates think that way, they are usually wrong, but judging from the situation so far, his thinking is extremely right.

“f*ck, what are you doing to wake up 3 hours earlier than everyone else and have to go through all this trouble because you took on the role of the advanced reconnaissance team?”

As he yawned and looked around, he heard the sound of something heavy rolling in his ears.

“Is it a rockfall? Damn it! Each platoon leader should move as far as possible from the direction of the sound and avoid it! If you get crushed by a stone, you will all die!”

At that, the platoon commanders were able to minimize the number of people killed by being crushed by pushing the soldiers back as much as possible with the help of the noncommissioned officer.

What rolled down to lay them down was not a rock, but a huge vat of oil.

Everyone there knew right away that this was the work of the enemy who was targeting them.

However, as they say, it is already too late when such an ambush occurs without noticing it, before they even scream to announce the ambush.

A burning arrow and Explosion magic flew from the forest at the same time and hit the oil barrel, igniting the barrel as it exploded, and the burning fragments flew in all directions, turning the surrounding area into a sea of fire.

“help me!!”

“f*ck, f*ck! it hurts!! water! water!!”

In addition, some soldiers were hit by burning shrapnel, and their bodies were already on fire, and they started burning alive.

Captain Alex, who had served in the army for several years, heard the sound of a platoon of enemy soldiers rushing away on horseback, so he decided that there would be no further attack.

“You have to shoot water balls at the children who are on fire to put out the fire, and return to the main point as soon as possible to report the fact that the enemy may surprise you at any time! Recruit your troops immediately and prepare to jump!”

It was the wisest decision to make under the circumstances.

Already, the morale of Captain Alex and the other soldiers was in a state where they couldn’t walk right away because of the fear of being surprised by an enemy attack in an unexpected situation.

Particularly, privates and privates who were new to war began to vomit at the terrible smell and sight of people’s clothes and flesh being burned.

In such a situation, the platoon commanders were of little help as they did not know how to control the situation.

Some of the veteran soldiers took advantage of this chaos and even succeeded in deserting.

However, as befits the rank of captain, Alex tenaciously made use of the experience he had accumulated in the military for several years, saving about 90 out of 100 soldiers safely and returning them, shouting.

“f*ck, dogs! Is it good to f*ck like a war like that?”

On the other hand, the headquarters of the Principality of Czechia, having heard the news from the preceding unit, said that even though the damage was relatively small compared to being surprised, this situation could be repeated at any time.

New guidelines have been passed on to all units.

“Doubling the number of night watchmen per company, increasing the number of units on patrol and the duration of patrols.”
