Carnage In Another World

Chapter 16 - The Smell of Death

Adrian and Elain were camped at the base of the mountain, sitting around a campfire to combat the chilly mountain wind. The area they were in was still much warmer than the snow that covered the mountain peaks.

[The moon here is much larger than the one I remember from earth] Adrian thought as he gazed out at the stars.

"It's quite and peaceful out here, and the night sky is breathtaking" Elain commented as she followed his gaze.

While he was looking at the moon hanging in the sky above them, it looked as though it was simply drifting amid a sea of stars.

Soon they both drifted off to sleep, snuggled close to the fire to conserve heat.

The next morning, while Elain was still asleep, Adrian began to clean up their camp site. He whisked everything into his inventory. After he finished, he sat down on a log they had placed there as a seat the night before. He waited patiently for her to wake, attempting to distract himself from her beauty. He began whittling an oddly shaped twig he found on the ground.

After an hour or so, she woke from her slumber to find Adrian waiting on her. "You could have woken me up you know?" she said as she brushed the dirt from her clothes with a gentle yawn.

"You seemed quite peaceful, I didn't have the heart to wake you." he said sheepishly.

"You..." Elain replied fl.u.s.tered. "Come on then, lets get going. The demons aren't going to hunt themselves" she retorted as she turned towards the forest, so Adrian wouldn't see her now rose colored cheeks.

"Yes ma'am!" Adrian replied jokingly as he arose from his seat and followed behind her.

Strolling through the woods, at the base of the mountain, they had found the tracks of what seemed to be a large creature. Following the traces it left behind they came across a bloody mess. The body of a man, torn asunder. It had to have been at least a day since he died. The fragments of flesh, had already started to rot.

The pungent smell of death permeated the area with the help of the mountain winds, making it hard to breathe. One could tell by looking at the scene in front of them that he wasn't killed for food. This was deliberate, as though a child was playing with a cheap toy.

They continued on their path, searching for this mysterious, foul creature. Eventually they came to a cave carved out of the face of the mountain. Blood smothered the mouth of the cave -a clear warning to intruders of what was lying inside.

Adrian, produced a torch from his inventory, and passed it to Elian.

"inferna", Elain mumbled as the oils on the torch were ignited. She then returned the torch to Adrian.

"I thought the spell was inferni?" Adrian asked as he accepted the now lit torch from her.

"If I'd used that spell, the torch would have exploded. "she laughed, as she found his ignorance amusing.

"I see," he replied embarrassed, before walking into the cave, Elian following behind swiftly.

"ErgOoooo... erghooooo", the sound of garbled snoring rang out, echoing off the walls.

"We seem to be getting close", Adrian and Elain said simultaneously, causing them to laugh.

"jinx" Adrian, said jokingly

"I don't sense a jinx anywhere", Elain said confused.

"Forget it, it was just a bad joke", Adrian assured as he struck himself on his forehead, with the palm of his hand [of course she wouldn't get the joke] he thought chastising his own foolishness.

By now the snoring had grown increasingly louder, a sure sign that the creature making the sound was close by. Turning another corner they saw it. Curled up with part of a rotting corpse clutched in its disfigured hands. The putrid stench in the cave had been terrible, and this enlightened them as to why.

The abomination in front of them looked like a large child, only it was around 8 feet tall, and bloated like a parade balloon. It's arms where thin and withered, but had a large bone like blade protruding from each wrist that was curved at the end, similar to a meat hook. The demon's head was also deformed and miss-shaped, with the likeness of a deflated melon. Blood and bile stained it's skin and it was lying in a pool of that mixture.

"We should lure it outside, I would rather not fight it inside, it looks like it could collapse" Adrian whispered, to Elian.

Elian nodded" inferni" she muttered and through a fireball which ignited the bile coating the monster, before turning and running for the entrance.

The creature wailed in agony as it's skin became charred. It noticed Adrian standing there gawking, and lunged at him.

Adrian spun around and dashed out of the cave, the demon hot on his heels. As Adrian reached the exit, he saw Elain standing with two fireballs smoldering in her soft hands. He finally got out of the mouth of the cave and jumped to the left.

When Adrian was out of the line of fire, Elain unleashed the balls of flame. They shot fourth, impacting on the demon's already charcoal like skin.

The demon screamed at the sky as it smashed against the rock face, before slumping to the ground. It stood back up on wobbly legs and charged at Elain.

Adrian, wielding a sword shrouded in purple flames, lunged forward, and managed to slice off the monsters leg at the knee. The sword cauterized the wound as it cut, so blood did not erupt from the creatures stump. Instead it fell over and tumbled down the slight decline outside the cave, until it crashed heavily into a tree. Adrian charged forward again aiming his blade at the monsters neck.

However, before he reached the demon, it had lifted its arm and the bone hook on its wrist was launched forward. With only a second to react he opened his inventory. When the world froze, the hook like bone was only a centimeter from the bridge of his nose.

"That was close," he said with a heavy sigh of relief.

Moving his head slightly to the left, he closed his inventory, and the demons projectile whizzed past his head, embedding itself in the rock face of the mountain behind him.

Adrian plunged his sword deep into the deformed cranial cavity of the demon before him. The flames one the blade frying whatever gray matter was left. As he pulled his sword out of the creatures skull, a familiar tide of notifications popped up in front of him.
