Daily Life Of A Ponytail Girl

Chapter 12 - Independent Research

As Yūi walked into the school's main building, she saw a short girl asking around groups of people. Recognizing the girl, she called out to her.

"Oh, hey coffee girl! There you are again!" Yūi said out loud while waving towards her.

"S- senpai?" the girl replied when she saw Yūi, and quickly approached her. "P- please stop calling me coffee girl! My name is Netsu! Netsu Jōnetsu!"

"Still as hasty as ever huh? Well alright, Nestu it is then!"

At hearing Yūi say her name, the redhead girl gulped with her face red of blush.

"Anyway Netsu, what're you doing?" Yūi started asking.

Netsu held up a notebook. "I t- tried to do some independent research to support you and the Ethics Committee."

Yūi tilted her head to the side. "You did some research on your own?"

"Y- yes, I asked around the other students to gather some information for you."

Yūi made a concerned expression. "I dunno if the Ethics Committee really likes us involving any more students than necessary though."

Netsu balled her hands. "I- it's fine, all of us want to support you guys in catching the culprit."

"If you put it like that, I can't turn down your help! What did you manage to find?" Yūi said with a confident smile.

With sparkles in her eyes, the redhead girl started talking. "Apparently, multiple students had heard sounds coming from school grounds late at night while passing by. Some are saying it might be the work of ghosts!"

Yūi gave a somewhat pained expression. "So it was ghosts who might've tempered with the vending machines? Aww, that's kinda disappointing. . ."

"Y- you don't like ghosts senpai?" Netsu quickly replied.

"Well, it's not that I don't, I was actually hoping it was some evil scientist or something, but whatever. What more did you find out?"

Netsu continued after shaking off her somewhat confused expression at the pink ponytail girl's words. "Something else I heard mentioned was that yesterday, the cafeteria stock seemed super empty."

"Well yeah, doesn't it make sense with all the vending machine down, everyone would get their drinks in the cafeteria?" Yūi asked.

"But that's the thing, it wasn't just limited to the drinks; They didn't have a lot of food either apparently. Some are saying it might just be because people had to go to the cafeteria anyways for drinks, so they bought food because they were there anyway, but it still seemed like a suspiciously huge amount of food was sold."

Yūi made a thinking face. "I think it's all starting to click together."

Netsu looked surprised at hearing that. "You figured out what happened?"

Yūi nodded. "So here's what happened; it all started with one super hungry girl. She was sooooo hungry, that she felt embarrassed at how much she wanted to eat, that she broke all the vending machines as a distraction. With all the panic it caused, no one would pay attention to the enormous amounts of food she'd buy and eat. It all makes sense."

Yūi was nodding to herself with a confident smile and telling her story like it was all-natural. Meanwhile, Netsu was just looking at Yūi with an expression that screamed ''This poor but innocent soul''.

"Anyways Netsu, I'll make sure to convey all the information to the Ethics Committee when I get in touch with them. You've been a huge help, so thank you!" Yūi said as she pat Netsu on the back.

"A- anything to be of help to you, senpai." Netsu said as she looked away with an embarrassed smile.

Looking from afar, two shadowy persons observed and listened in on the conversation between the two girls.

"Rep, it seems like we should execute the plan quickly."

"It indeed appears you're right. First break before lunch break, we'll finally engage with them, and put an end to this."
