Detesting The System: Sundering Fate

Chapter 12 - Unprecedented Innate Skill

After showing me around my new home, Hestia asked me to lay on the sofa topless for the purpose of granting me her blessing. But before that, I expressed reluctance as I was still covered in nothing but dirty rags as clothes. I wouldn't put it above the hateful Voidseeker to cause this bit of annoyance…

Luckily, Hestia just so happened to have several sets of clothes for people of all sizes and genders at the ready. So, after taking the clothes into my possession, I first took a quick shower to free myself of any dirt or grime the clothes the rags might have infected me with. I slipped into the bland white and tan clothes Hestia gave me, and after leaving the restroom, I followed her instructions and formally joined her familia.

As I lied on the sofa waiting for her to do conduct the ritual, she talked me through the process, saying, "Now then, I'll begin by marking you with my blood. That's pretty much the whole ritual. But, after you become a part of my familia I'll be able to update your status and give notice to any abilities you might manifest during your adventures. Don't be pressured to take on any risks and slowly grow as an adventurer. Usually, only those that progress steadily..."

As she spoke, I felt a cold breeze spread from the center of my back to my extremities as Hestia stopped making any movements. She was quiet and unmoving for several seconds, so I asked, "Is everything alright?"

Turning my head to lock eyes after not getting a response, I was met with a face of utter shock. With eyes widened and mouth agape, Hestia looked like one of Medusa's victims; petrified to stone. Helplessly, I fixed my head back to a more comfortable position, as the Goddess was still seated squarely by my back. Coincidentally, the moment I relaxed myself in wait for Hestia to escape whatever shocked her senseless, a notification clouded my sight.

Just as I finished reading through the last line of the notification, a high pitched screech almost caused my heart to fly out of my c.h.e.s.t. Hestia seemed to have gone mad as she looked at me with utmost terror. Jumping off my back and scurrying away faster than a cat catching sight of a cuc.u.mber, Hestia yelled at me whilst taking cover by the door, saying, "Y-You… W-who are you!"

Feeling a headache coming from the obvious interrogation Hestia probably intended to put me through, I said, "Mhmm… For now, I'm just another member of your familia."

"Why?! No one with an Innate Skill as absurd as your's should be looking for a Goddess as poor as me! Surely, you were born to strong adventurers, so why did you come to me?"

Tactfully, I averted the conversation from anything related to me or my origins, saying, "Why? Because no one else would entertain the thought of accepting me. Everywhere I went, I was looked at like trash and you were the only one to accept me." Seeing her calm down, I feigned ignorance and asked, "Could you tell me why you reacted like that?"

Hestia took a couple moments, but eventually, she said, "Right… I just overreacted..." She walked back into the room and picked up a piece of parchment before saying, "Lay back down and I'll imprint what I saw." Putting up with the act, I followed her instructions and waited for her to finish.

When she got off and handed over the paper, I noticed that my stats were actually written out in greater detail. My Son of Heaven Innate Skill was also written out, but knowing myself I didn't even try pretending to be shocked. Calmly, I asked, "Ok? What's the problem?"

"What's the pro- DID YOU EVEN READ IT? You can level up at will and grow indefinitely! Admittedly, it'll be extremely hard to reach SSS stats, but still…" She seemed lost as the words came out of her mouth. Her head turning down to face the ground, as the volume with which she spoke slowly decreased until she stopped talking altogether.

"Seems to me like that's a good skill. If you're worried I'll leave your familia just because others will appreciate my ability, don't. As long as neither of us mentions the existence of the skill, I'll just be another adventurer. I'm a petty guy, and the harsh looks others gave me when they didn't even know me have merited a grudge to form with each and every one of them."

My words seemed to have stolen the tension in Hestia's heart as she slowly stopped treating me so distantly. She and I talked for a bit longer about some of the processes I had to complete before heading for the dungeon. I learned that before I could enter the dungeon, I had to register at the Guild and get my ID to enter the dungeon. Additionally, we talked about my Magic Stat. Usually, magic was rarely found in humans, so she gave me some references to visit later when I made money to buy spells. Little did she know I could just think up any skill and already know how to achieve proficiency.
