Devil's Word Magic In Fairy Tail

Chapter 40 - Arthur VS Gildarts!

Okay.

I'm ready now.

It's time I faced off with Gildarts, the ace of fairy tail…

Now if that ain't a challenge I don't know what is!

"Let's go to the back everyone, the shore will do for a nice battle ground!" Gramps said, walking towards the back of the guildhall with everyone in tow.

People we're debating excitedly, even betting on who would win with large sums

Somehow our supposedly little mock fight turned into a big thing! Though I guess we're only doing it for shits and giggles, they kinda already made me S rank unofficially.

This is more of a sealing of the deal or like just to make it official kind of fight.

Once we arrived at the shore of the lake behind the guild hall, everyone gathered in one area to spectate me and Gildarts. We both walked up in front of the beach and turned to face off with each other.

"Aren't you a little too close to the guild here…?" Someone from the crowd pointed out nervously.

It was no secret that Gildarts was prone to destroying buildings after all, nor am I a saint when it comes to that.

Though I do fix the things I break….

"Don't worry, I got this." I replied before people could even talk it through, walking up to where the water was.

"{Platform}!" I said, creating a decently sized arena in the middle of the lake and jumping to where it was.

"This should do nicely, no?" I asked, gesturing to Gildarts to hop on

He complied, jumping on to the platform with a hop.

"This is nice, seems like it might actually hold up to our attacks ey?" Gildarts grinned at me.

"Perhaps it might, need one last finishing touch though. {Barrier}!" I replied and surrounded the entire arena in a barrier cube, as to protect the others from any stray attacks.

The entire place was about a three hundred by three hundred meter space. Decently sized for a battle in the middle of a lake.

"Hoooh? That's good enough for me, well then. Shall we begin?" Gildarts asked.

"Whenever you're ready." I replied and began muttering all of my enhancement spells one after the other.

"Good luck you both!" Cana yelled out as she waved to us.

"Good luck Arthur, make sure you win as well!" Erza yelled to me as she held on to Cana for support.

"I'll beat your a.s.s myself if you lose! You hear me Gildarts?" Ur yelled to Gildarts with a grin.

"Show him who's boss, Arthur!" Gray yelled to me.

"I'm not sure who to cheer on, but show us what you've got you two! This is getting me all fired up!" Natsu yelled to us, unable to calm himself from excitement.

Many more cheers came from the crowd, while Ultear and Lyon simply debated it quietly.

"Who do you think will win?" Lyon asked.

"Hmm… Arthur has the advantage of maneuverability and amount of potential attacks he can dish out, be it at once or as in types of spells. He's really versatile while Gildarts is a pure one shot one kill type of fighter with an extensive amount of stamina and fighting perception… It's hard to say but I think it might end up as a battle of attrition." Ultear gave her opinion.

"You're probably right, I can't think of a better outcome myself… But really, who wins out in that battle?" Lyon said

"Guess we'll find out." Ultear replied.

"The two combatants are ready! May the fight, Begin!" Gramps yelled out the announcement for our fight to start!

I had already used every enhancement I had and activated Ether Zone, my focus was through the roof and at the moment gramps announced the start I was prepared to launch my attack but…

Gildarts attacked first!

With a sound breaking dash he appeared in front of me, hand outstretched and ready to slam down on to my face!

I immediately teleported to the top of the barrier cube! Conjuring twenty Cruel Suns all the while and sending them towards Gildarts who simply smirked.

"You really did react even though I moved that fast, I knew I could take you seriously! Hahaha!" Gildarts laughed as the balls of flame rained down towards him.

Using my magic control I had them spiral above him in a flaming tornado that would soon engulf him!

Of course Gildarts would be able to easily deal with something of that level, so instead I went back to the ground while he was preoccupied and cast the spell "{Silence}" around myself, preventing Gildarts from hearing any of my future words of power.

"{All Crush}!" Gildarts yelled out, outstretching his palm towards the sky and sending a wave of crush energy that separated the tornado of flaming suns into nothing more than embers.

As the embers fell, I moved in towards my opponent with two Rasenshurikens in both of my hands, throwing the first one towards him and using the momentum of the throw I made a 360 degree turn to throw the other one as well.

"So that's your new spell that Ur mentioned, huh?" Gildarts said with an amused expression. "Interesting!" He yelled and wound up his fist to strike at the first shuriken.

With all but ease, he completely obliterated the attack. The second one followed shortly only to meet the same fate but that was only what was natural.

Attacking Gildarts head on will yield nothing, he can obliterate most of my spells with ease using his crush magic.

Instead, I used the fact he still didn't know about Ether Zone to my advantaged and moved while using the first two shurikens as a diversion! Once I was in my twenty meter range and Gildarts was more than focused on my charging self who held a spiraling flame in one hand.

I had all the pieces needed to strike him!

"{Rasenshuriken}." With that silenced mutter, a closed in on Gildarts who was ready for my frontal attack, while my actual spell had formed behind him!

With no chance to dodge, Gildarts noticed the attack way too late and was slammed from behind by the shuriken!

His whole body frame was sent flying across the arena, spinning past me like a Beyblade before the shuriken exploded near the outer edges creating a dome of spiraling magic that continued to strike the opponent repeatedly.

"That ain't gonna cut it, but I should have done some decent damage…" I muttered to myself before starting another combo.

"{Lighting Javelin} {Spiral Flame} {Steel Spikes} {Tidal Wave}" I quickly uttered as the Rasenshuriken's dome was still spiraling at the edge of the arena.

The spells I summoned were many in number, over fifty lighting javelins and forty spiraling flames, aside from them I have nearly three hundred steel spikes hovering around me.

The first to go towards the dome was the fifty meter tall wave of water.

"UUUuuGGgHHhhOOOooo!!!" Gildarts grunted out a roar as the spiraling dome stopped and parted into nothing more but cubes of magic power, he had been battered up but it seemed that he mostly negated the attack with his crush magic breaking it apart in consecutive waves of energy that he sent out like pulses from his body all around himself.

Once he was out, he could only see a tidal wave akin to that in a thundering ocean looming over him

"Hahahaha! Now this is what I'm talking about!" He didn't even seem fazed at the fact I had taken the lead in this fight.

I can't stop using spells, if he gets the chance to attack back it would be quite troublesome…

Through the wave of water, a barrage of hundreds of spikes went towards Gildarts who merely smiled and dodged them like there were nothing more than small rocks a kid had chucked at him one by one.

Once the tidal wave had been just about to wash him away, Gildarts simply waved his hand, dismissing the wave of water like it was but a mere splash in a kid's pool, even what remained of the still darting spikes quickly vanished.

Although he had obviously come out unscathed from my attack, that was as I had expected it to be. What remained of my spells still, were the cubes that rained down like rain on to his location.

The moment he had broken apart the water I had already sent the lighting javelins flying towards his location

Gildarts could now finally see me again beyond the now missing tidal wave, his eyes widened upon realizing my intentions through using that wave of water.

The lighting hit the ground around him, I made sure not to send it at him directly else he'd just disassemble it with crush magic.

The electricity quickly ran through the now wet floor and reached Gildarts' location, all fifty javelins of lighting had hit!

Gildarts got zapped from the insane amount of electricity, stopping him in place as he tried his best to endure the numbing pain.

Now that he was stunned, I could use my last set of spells!

"{Wind Vortex}" I said, creating a spiraling vortex of wind around the many spinning orbs of fire above me.

I proceeded to unleash all hell down onto Gildarts as the wind and fire combined, the many spiral flame waves merged into one and that one wave of blaze was further enhanced by a horizontally turned tornado!

The destructive spell made its way quickly towards my opponent as I started to prepare my next attack.

"Not bad Arthur…" Gildarts muttered through the lighting zapping him.

My danger perception rang before I could even think of my next spell's incantation.

A white light shone from Gildarts' position, his hand raised towards my flaming vortex as it moved towards him.

The light had come from his hand, and soon that light was enlarged as a blast of crush energy overwhelmed my spell completely and moved towards me!

"{Crushing Evil, Spreading the Truth: Seraphim's Light}!" Gildarts roared as the blast of energy washed past the arena platform!

Even through my magic's warning, the light shone past me at beyond sound breaking speeds leaving me with no time to react! A mere foot was what separated me from being turned into small cubes!

I looked behind me, following the huge trail that had decimated the arena floor, to the barrier I had set.

There was now a huge perfectly circular hole in it, breaking it as if it were made of sticks!

"Yo! Arthur!" Gildarts yelled, gaining my attention. "I think it's about time for my turn don't you think?" He said with a grin before charging up his palms with crush energy.

"This is one of my new ones! Can't have you kids hogging all the spotlight with your fancy new spells now can I? {Crushing Evil, Spreading the Truth: Orb of Truth}!" Gildarts said, creating a perfectly spherical white orb, holding it with his two hands!

Not a moment later he threw the orb at my direction, which I promptly dodged with a teleport to the other side of the arena.

My dodge proved unsuccessful as the orb immediately turned around and began to rush towards me once more!

"It's a homing spell?!" I blurted out in surprise, though I couldn't be heard because of my silencing spell.

"Hahahaha!" Gildarts laughed heartily at my surprised expression as he moved his right hand from side to side, two fingers outstretched and obviously controlling the spell.

Eh, so it's not homing?

Either way he really came up with a new spell, huh! This is getting complicated…

I started teleporting from place to place within the arena, dodging the orb as best as I could but it would only continue to follow me as Gildarts guided it.

Finally, I cast {Conceal presence} and {Invisibly} before teleporting to the top corner of the back left from where Gildarts stood.

"Hmm? Where'd you go?" Gildarts asked, retrieving the orb to the palm of his hand as he looked around for me, scratching the back of his head.

"Damn it, I need to get rid of that orb somehow…" I muttered in silence.

My options weren't many, but I might be able to hide from him for a bit longer before he notices me.

My concealment spells aren't that good against people of such a high level, though invisibility definitely helps out a lot here too.

"Hmmm, actually I think I got something… {Concealment Area}!" I said in silence, creating an area where everything was concealed in front of me.

"Okay, that should do… Now then, {Cruel Sun}" I said, filling up the entire concealed area with as many flaming suns as I could.

Now that the area was full, I had it move in to different places among the arena rapidly, leaving a hidden invisible Cruel Sun in each spot before Gildarts could notice the big mass' existence.

Such a big mass of magic power is hard to hide after all.

But thanks to me doing it quickly enough, he was now none the wiser and couldn't sense the spells around him in the slightest!

"Mmmm… If you're not gonna come out, I guess I'll search for ya!" Gildarts said after waiting for only a few seconds which were enough for me to finish my idea from start to finish.

He used the white orb to scourge the entire arena, moving alongside the walls and floor looking for my concealed self as I dodged and moved the suns around so he didn't destroy them before I could even employ my strategy.

I quickly revealed three of the cruel suns, sending them towards Gildarts from behind him.

"Oh! There you are!" Gildarts exclaimed, sending the orb towards the direction of the cruel suns only to realize I wasn't there.

The white orb decimated the cruel suns easily, leaving Gildarts bewildered as to where I might be.

Then I sent another wave of revealed cruel suns from another direction, and then also a wave of concealed cruel suns!

The revealed ones were just like before extinguished, while the hidden ones were only noticed in the last second and promptly dodge by the S rank mage!

I repeated the process a few times, almost hitting him each time but he was getting better at dodging the invisible attacks.

Gildarts quickly realized what was happened and changed the posture of his hand, opening his palm wide as he controlled the orb!

The orb separated into many tiny cubes of crush energy, gaining immense speed and darting about the entire place, randomly hitting the concealed spells and destroying them one after the other!

"Why don't you go ahead and come out right about now, ey? Hahaha!" Gildarts laughed as the Orb reformed in his hand, now once more turned into a fist with only two fingers outstretched and controlling said orb.

"Gladly." I said, no longer silenced by any concealment spell.

I revealed myself behind Gildarts, who immediately turned around to look at me and smile widely.

"Hoooh? That one seems different from the rest…" He commented on the spell which I was holding above my head.

While Gildarts was busy with dealing with invisible cruel suns, I took my time in creating the {True Sun} spell during my concealment, also silencing the area around it as the spell was quite loud.

Hard as it was, what with me teleporting around as to dodge his random attacks and the few times he managed to notice my location, I had managed to create the spell successfully!

"You'd do best to treat it as such, I'm still not very proficient with using it you see… Don't wanna hurt our beloved ace now do I?" I jokingly mocked, though the warning was serious.

I don't have any other spell that could beat Gildarts' Orb of Truth, so my only option is this True Sun spell…

If I can break that spell, I might be able to get back the flow of battle from before…

"You know how to make an old man excited, kid! My blood is pumping!" Gildarts said with a grin as he literally grabbed hold of the orb, charging it up more than before and enlarging it to about four meters in diameter!

I just hope I'm not underestimating Gildarts' new spell too much, or maybe overestimating my own…

We stood facing one another, my True Sun bulging and deforming while I held it, it gave a sense of power and domination.

Gildarts' Orb of Truth was the opposite, it stood proud with it pure white color, bright light shining like a beacon of hope!

These two spells would now collide!

Both me and Gildarts accelerated in but a single moment towards one another, holding out spherical spells over head with one hand each!

In a single breath we reached on another, slamming the two spells into one another as an earth shattering, thunderous explosion sounded across the entire lake!

My barrier shattered into pieces, the arena crumbled, the lake separated and tidal waves formed in an attempt to swallow up the shores!

A beam of bright light shone towards the sky from the center of where we collided all the while, neither spell allowing itself to led up as we both roared in an attempt to overpower the other!

My silencing zone was now long gone, blown away by the magic power that had been coming in waves as if pulsating from in between the Orb of Truth and True Sun, the sounds became even more disastrous as unstable Sun showed of its continuous explosive sounds coming from its unstable nature, it took me consecutively yelling {Equilibrium} and using all my magic control to keep it together!

Sadly, Gildarts had no such problem. Even though in truth my spell was more powerful in nature, Gildarts' spell was far more stable and he only needed to pump up magic power to overpower me slowly, while I had to do that and also keep the True Sun stable…

In the end, Gildarts' Orb of Truth overpowered the True Sun, erasing it from existence as it hit me dead on, landing on my entire body frame and sending me flying across the Lake that was still in the middle of emptying itself.

As Gildarts was not trying to kill me, he retracted the orb mid-flight allowing me to ungracefully crash through the trees and fly nearly three kilometers through the forest until I crashed into the ground forming a decently sized crater.

The damage from his attack was so severe that I blacked out before I even flew past my first kilometer…
