Chapter 7 - Time skip

Thirteen years had passed since Adam had his first day of training with his father, those lasting until he reached the age of 15 and became a squire.

Squirehood was still extremely difficult, as he left to war immediately along with the knight he served under.

Until he earned the rank of knight Adam had gone through at least twenty battles, many life and death situations and most importantly he had learned many lessons.

He had been deployed to fight against the forest barbarians in the west since he gained his knight title-something that most people would be terrified of, if they were ever told that. That is because the two hardest fronts to fight in were the Frozen North or the Western Forest.

The freezing temperatures made the north more than worthy enough to become an unbearable environment. On the other hand, the savages that inhabited the Western Forest would make a recruit faint on the spot.

That is why the knights that were stationed on either front were categorised into two elite units- The Huntsmen and The Rangers.

The Huntsmen wore thick fur coats and were mostly known for their stamina and endurance, able to travel miles a day through subzero temperatures.

The Rangers wore green clothes with hoods that covered their faces. Leaves and branches are also sewn into them, to offer perfect camouflage. They were well known for their impeccable aim with the bow and their tracking skills.

It was said that when the king wants someone to be afraid, he will sent a group of huntsmen after them. If he wants them dead the king will send one ranger, one is always more than enough.

Adam had not only become a bonafide ranger during the seven years spent in the forest, he also quickly rode up in ranks and is currently Lieutenant Colonel of the Rangers- translating to second only to the General.

That rank had automatically promoted his nobility status to that of a Marquis, granting him his own territory and castle once he returns back to the kingdom.

Though that day may actually come sooner than expected- Adam's brilliant use of tactics had pushed the barbarians to their limits and

the final showdown is at hand.

An army of 30,000 exhausted barbarians are desperately trying to overpower Adam's legion of 4000 Rangers. One may say that the numbers dictate the odds, but that is only until Adam is put in command.

His flawless victories over the barbarians is what caused his spike in ranks- more than often winning fights against the odds.

"Sir, the remaining barbarians are retreating to the mountain paths. Should we follow?"

"The General is waiting on the other side with the rest of the Rangers. We have won this battle before it even began."

Adam replied to the soldier that gave the report, his voice sounding deeper and more pleasing since he's all grown up.

He tested out his singing abilities one night when he was alone and was shocked at just how entrancing his voice sounded. Some soldiers heard him and whenever Adam would go out singing at night, the soldiers would secretly take turns in listening to him.

When Adam found out about it he didn't condone their behaviour and actually let them listen to him openly. This further increased their relationship with their Lieutenant.

"Understood sir... but doesn't that mean what I think it does?"

"That thirty years of war are finally over? I believe it does mean that, Franklin."

Franklin was a shorter fellow, a bit younger than Adam. He served as Adam's squire and after witnessing the man's brilliance he decided to continue following him.

He is extremely loyal to Adam and over the years he had proved himself in battle over and over again.

Adam used this loyalty and assigned a squadron of 50 soldiers which not only became loyal to Franklin, but also to the man their captain served under. This squad of 50 rangers were so loyal to Adam and Franklin that they would obey their orders over even the king.

Speaking about the king, he had passed away about three years ago- Adam found out first from a letter, sent to him by his dad. Some things had changed since then; the most memorable one being the abandonment of the Northern Front.

The Huntsmen were all recalled back to the kingdom and now act as the queen's personal guard. Other than that however, Adam doesn't know about anything else.

He had left the kingdom when he was fifteen and not once had he returned, now he's 25. Ten years in which he had quite enough of fighting and funnily enough, the only thing he missed more than farming right now was his old man.

Now with the war in the West finally coming to a close, Adam's first chance to return back home had come.

And boy was he feeling nervous... only person as nervous as him was Loki inside his head, who became a fantastic moral support to Adam over the years. He could even call him a friend by now, though he never really admits it.

*Remember that pretty girl Isabel? I wonder how she's holding up... more than that I want to see her react to your new look. If she took a fancy to you when you were a wee boy, I bet she'll jump straight into your arms by now!*

*She's probably already married, you know how nobles are with their daughters.* Adam replied to Loki's little teasing and began thinking about the prospect of marriage.

Should he get married? He's already achieved the rank of Lieutenant and Viscount at the age of 25, pretty much making him bachelor of the year.

One thing that his father always kept a secret from Adam in their letters, was how rumours about his achievements have already spread throughout the kingdom. A young, handsome Lieutenant that was changing the tides of the Western front.

Many nobles have come to Adam's father with propositions of marriage, some of them being quite high ranked. This made his father extremely proud of his son, never saying it to Adam's face but always mentioning it when he visits his wife's grave.

When news of the Western War coming to an end reached Adam's father's ears, he already began making preparations for a huge welcoming party. He even got his workers in on it, most of whom felt like their boss and his son were family and were therefore very happy to help.
