Dragon Ball: New Life

Chapter 45 - School Day (part 2)

Reiss was instantly interested in the fact that one of their classmates fought crime as a hobby. He could see how it would be fun running around the city fighting crime. As a hobby he thought it was a good idea, however if she believed she could actually end crime she would be a fool.

"A crime fighter, you say?" Gohan asked. "That's interesting."

"Yeah Videl's dad is Mr. Satan. He is a professional fighter." Erasa was happy to explain her friends position. "She even works with the city's police department."

Unknown to Erasa, she had given Videl the opening she needed to bring up the bank robbery. She had been thinking of a way to broach the subject. However before she could bring up the subject, Reiss provided the answer.

"So is this a high crime city?" the prince asked. "Just this morning, Gohan and I stopped a bank robbery on the way to school."

"It was you two after all!" Videl accidentally shouted. Recognizing her error she quickly slapped her hands over her mouth.

"Ms. Videl, if you could please lower your voice, class is about to start." the professor said.

The pig tailed girl was angered by her own impulsive outburst. The students refocused their attention on the professor as he droned on with his lesson. Reiss looked around, trying to find something interesting in the room. He noted Gohan was especially studious from the amount of notes he was taking.

When the class was over, Erasa offered to show Reiss and Gohan the way to the their next class. They were swamped by a mob of students the entire walk towards the outdoor facilities in the back of the five story building. Once word spread about the imperial prince attending school, he became the center of attention.

"I didn't think it would be like this." Gohan whispered to his cousin.

He never imagined his cousin would attract the level of attention that he did. Their past interaction made Gohan view Reiss as just another person with no regard for his status. Now he was seeing the effects of having a famous family member first hand.

"I told you, there was no way I was going to be low profile." Reiss shrugged.

The various students in the crowd slowly started to disperse to go to their different classes. Videl thought it would be the best chance to get her questions answered. From the interactions she saw Reiss have with the other students, he seemed approachable.

"About that bank robbery you two stopped. The way witness described it, you two were like nothing they had ever seen." Videl began her question, "How were you able to do that?"

"That wasn't anything special." Reiss looked to Gohan to in an attempt to figure out why the pushy girl was making an issue out of the robbery.

"What do you mean nothing special? People said you both had golden glows." Videl asserted.

"Yeah, we are Super Saiyans. That's what it looks like when we transform." Reiss explained. "My cousin is also a half Saiyan, our fathers are brothers." Videl had totally forgotten the fact that the blue haired boy was half alien.

"Oh wow, that's amazing Gohan." Erasa chimed in, "The children of world champions club at this school is growing."

"Erasa's joking." Sharpner said, "At least, there is no club yet."

In the back of the school was a replica of the world tournament arena encircled by a large track. On the opposite side of the track was a domed facility almost as tall as the five story school building.

The instructors separated the class into those that were interested in the martial studies versus the students who just wanted to play traditional sports. Surprising for Reiss, his cousin opted to not to take the sports course. He was sure Gohan had grown less interested in combat over the last few years.

The instructor informed the students that there would soon be a school wide selection. The strongest students would be picked to represent the school in the upcoming World Martial Arts Tournament. When they were told of this, many of the students became excited by the prospect of becoming world champion.

Next, the class was led into the indoor training facility inside the domed building. There was a multitude of equipment and machinery neatly arranged in the building. It was explained, for the benefit of the new students, that the building was used for strength training and assessment tests. The students would often be tested to insure they were making progress. Their first stop was a machine that was made like a vertical ring with a platform in the center. The platform was one meter in diameter and if one stood in the center it would look like Leonardo da Vinci's "Vitruvian Man."

"Ms. Videl, would you like to demonstrate?" the teacher asked.

Videl confidently hopped onto the platform and reached out to clutch the hand bars at her sides. She smirked slightly because she currently held the school's strength record. In the last month, she intensified her training to prepare to compete in the World Tournament.

"Are you ready?" the teacher asked.

When she gave the go ahead, the instructor activated the machine. The girl slowly began to pull the bars closer together. After a few seconds, her progress was being reversed by the machine pulling back against her, Videl doubled her focus and renewed her fight. When then machine returned to its original position, the test was over.

"Exceptional as always, Videl!" the instructor cheered. "If your martial skills match your strength, which I know they do, you'll be a shoo-in for one of the school's tournament slots."

"Thank you, sir." she replied. Even if she didn't use one of the school's tournament participation slots, she would still be able to compete on her own.

Reiss looked over at his cousin, mouth hanging open, absolutely shocked by the girl's performance. Gohan gave a slight smile and shrugged at his cousin's surprise. Reiss never thought a display that weak would be worthy of high praise. The level of power Kakarot's friends possessed shaded what Reiss expected from average Earthlings.

"Impressive, huh?" Erasa nudged Reiss in the ribs with her elbow. She thought he was staring at her friend because he never saw person around his age that was as strong as Videl.

"I guess you could say that." the blue haired teen wasn't sure if the blonde girl was being sarcastic or not.

"Since we need to check both of you, who would like to go first?" the instructor looked to his new students. He was curious as to whether the prince would be as strong as his father.

"Sure, I'll do it." Reiss said.

The instructor waited for the prince to step onto the platform. When Reiss gripped the handlebars of the machine the teacher prepared to press the start sequence.

"Now remember, this is state of the art equipment. Don't feel down once it surpasses your strength level, that is what it's supposed to do." the instructor calmly explained. Many students feel depressed every time they lose because it feels like they haven't improved.

"Okay," Reiss nodded.

When the machine started, Reiss pulled the handlebars while the machine fought back. The equipment's machinery began whirring and humming as it tried to overcome the teen. The instructor's eyes were jumping back from the console to the boy and back to the console. The readings were higher than he had ever seen.

Reiss's hands were nearly touching together when the machine's ring snapped in two. The blue haired teen was left holding the bars and the metallic pistons attached to them. If it wasn't for the machine's depressed humming sounds as it shut down defeated, a pin could have been heard dropping. Everyone was staring at the destruction Reiss caused.

"That shouldn't be possible, right?" Sharpner's voice was barely audible.

"That still counts, even if it broke, correct?" Reiss asked. All the students shifted their view to the instructor, waiting for his answer.

"Ye-yes Prince Reiss." the instructor was frightened by the readout on the console. The maximum exertion capacity of the machine was 25 tons. Judging by the ease in which Reiss destroyed the device, he was capable of much more.

The teacher glanced over at Videl and sighed to himself. She was the frontrunner to represent the school until now. Looking at the other students he could tell that most of the males had broken out in a cold sweat. They clearly had plans to embarrass the prince in some way to elevate their status, now their dreams were dashed into pieces. Others looked on believing that they should try and enter into Reiss's inner circle, that way they could gain cushy jobs in the future.

"Mr. Gohan, we will have to do your assessment tomorrow." the instructor said. "We will have to replace the machine." Gohan nodded in understanding.

After school, Videl, Erasa, Sharpner, Reiss, and Gohan met out front because the blonde girl wanted to talk to them. By the end of the day, Gohan had come to terms with the fact his plan of remaining anonymous wouldn't be happening.

"I was wondering if you guys wanted to come study at my place?" she asked, "I mean we all seem to get along just fine."

"I should probably go out on patrol." Videl said. She liked to give the city a once over before going home to make sure there were no criminals running rampant.

Reiss looked over at his cousin to get a sense of where he stood on the choice. Gohan, like Reiss, had no experience with going to a friend's house.

"Sure, we'll go." Reiss answered.

"You sure?" Gohan asked, "I mean, I have a long flight back to Pozu, and I need to look after my brother."

Sharpner was internally thrilled by the prospect of the two Saiyans not tagging along to Erasa's house. It would be one less person to overshadow him, besides they didn't need anymore members for their little group.

"If you are sure Gohan, then I'll just go." Reiss offered, "Although I'm sure your brother will be fine."

"You know, I think I changed my mind." Videl said, "It has been awhile since we all did something together."

Sharpner was happy his crush, Videl, decided to go. He didn't care why she changed her mind, though she rarely did.

"You're right Reiss," Gohan quickly added, "I think Goten will be alright."

Sharpner's mood swiftly dropped to rock bottom the moment Gohan changed his mind. Videl thought it might be a good opportunity to discover just how strong the new boys were. Gohan was actually interested in learning more about the pig tailed girl. Erasa was smiling with excitement that her friends decided to come over, while Reiss wasn't quite sure what was going on.

The flight to Erasa's home was supposed to be short, but the group spotted a disturbance. A group of masked men with lasers were attacking what appeared to be protesters near the circus that recently came to the city. Videl didn't know what caused the situation, but she was determined to put a stop to it.
