Everlasting System: Changing Stories

Chapter 2 - The Mastermind Behind the System

Soren was the ultimate devil, Lucifer's right-hand man. So when did he carry the responsibility of carrying people's fate? Humans would beg the heavens for Soren to retire, who'd want their ready-made life placed on the devil's hand? But, it was the heavens who had accepted him. Ever since he felt remorse, and sympathy towards the humans, the gods above started thinking about his position. When they saw his wide range of novels in his private library, along with his works that emphasized sadness, pain, empathy along with sympathy, they had promoted him.

Of course, Lucifer had thrown a tantrum, but what could he do? It would do him absolutely no convenience in the end if he had insisted keeping a turned-good man by his side.

And the moment he was turned to the God of Fate, he invented the Everlasting System. Yahoo! What's its use? For those pitiful souls to get a second chance to have their lives fixed. His scripts and novels would be played by them, and if they win... They earned that second chance.

Typically, if they lose, they would stay dead and be a part of the Underworld, never to enter the heavens again.

The system was obviously for the dead, but it was boring. Most of the time they lost, and when that happens, they complain to the higher-ups. And the higher-ups would lash at him for being too difficult. But if he wasn't difficult, no one would see the meaning of life itself! Why can't they see it? Those pitiful souls either committed suicide, or got killed! They needed to know meaning to move on. His system was already a cheat, and to balance it all out, it had to be difficult.

One of the complaints finally struck his last cord, and he officially closed down Everlasting.

But, now it was open again. The Everlasting Trials had started and his main contestant was Elise Knight, the lovely lady who'd been to every tough spot in life, from second lead, to no one... And from no one, to villain.

A dismantled body lied in the concrete ground, it's rough texture digging on the delicate, broken skin. Her heart feverishly pounded on her c.h.e.s.t, only for blood to pump out from her head. Her shoulder ached, and her tears, unable to withdraw them, drop down her grubby cheeks in big drops.

"H-Help..." She whispered in the large mass that surrounded her. All the faces around here, she was looking for him. But, she couldn't see him. Where was he? And for once since she had gotten into the accident that caused her this sickness, fear struck her.

This was the feeling she was always repulsed with every time she saw it in the movies... Two people, reaching out despite the impossible odds. She didn't want to be alone in a crowd, suffering through the hums and buzz, while no one held her. She wanted someone to hold her, to tell her;

"Even if you don't recognize me... I will recognize you."

The last tear dropped to the ground. And there was nothing else to say.

Elise stood along the crowd, her brows in a frown as she turned to the handsome man in a three-piece suit, "Who is she?"

There was a mischievous smile on his face, "You."

"You must be mistaken, /and/ blind. I don't look like that." Indeed she wasn't. The woman, dying in the pavement wasn't her. For one, she didn't have wavy, blonde hair that stood out delicately as if it was woven from the skies. She didn't have a voluptuous figure that men would crave to claim the lady theirs, and women wish to be born with. And most importantly, she did not show her fear so clearly in her eyes.

"Indeed you aren't the woman... But, that is the woman you'll be playing." His smile turned to a grin, as he fixed his tie and vanished in the crowd.

"Hey!" She turned, running after the man. Just as she thought she'd lost him, she caught sight of his suit and rushed to grab it. He turned with a raised brow and pursed lips. "You've got to be kidding me!"

"We've discussed this, have we not? Princess Divorce, also known as Delphi, the prized daughter of the Kanes." He repeated what he said to her after he had explained his Everlasting System. "She breaks the hearts of many for the one who'd be 'the one'. You even said, and I quote 'the bullshit of the one'"

"I know, alright?" She hissed, "But you didn't tell me she suffered from... From..."

He gave a soft chuckle, obviously amused with her cat-like anger. "Her condition, in simple terms, is called Face Blindness or Prosopagnosia, it's original term."

"You... Expect me to find the happy ending with the villain, second leads and main leads with such condition? Are you crazy?!" She screamed, no one turned their heads towards them. After all, she was just a bystander, a no one. They were invisible in their eyes.

"Yes, a simple goal."

"She... Delphi has broken many hearts, Mr. Soren." Her tone went colder with each word. "One of those hearts was the main lead, Logan Kiel, whom suddenly, and I add, stupidly fell in love with the Delphi's sister, whom is also the main lead... I can't find a happy ending in this!"

"So, you want to be a slave?"

"NO!"

His eyes turned to steel, his patience wearing thin. "Then find a way to make it happen. I have told you their profiles, and how Delphi fell into the pit of jealousy to the point of wanting to kill her own sister. Pitiful human being was killed, or shall I say murdered---"

"What?"

"Either way, find a way to /get/ that happy ending for I have no more to tell you."

"B-But the ending has already happened!"

"I only emphasized her pain... The feeling of her jealousy as it boiled, and how it turned her to an unfortunate state... And you will start with her, surviving the crash." Without anymore words, he turned to leave, letting her rethink the whole story.

"Do remember dear... My words carry power, but only the readers could bring those words alive." With the words, Elise's figure materialized to dust, only for her to feel the pain of her bones as if it was still being crushed.
