His Little Pet

Chapter 1 - Unexpected Promotion?

I sit in my chair at the meeting, making small doodles all over my paper, boredom overtaking me. How do people sit through these things so easily? I can barely make it through one every week, and some people have to do it almost daily?!

"Miss Reins, see me in my office after the meeting. And bring the files I gave Miss Hill last week."

I stiffen in my seat and snap out of my own thoughts at the sound of my name coming from his mouth. My heart starts racing. I've been working here for two months now and Mr. Li has said maybe two sentences to me in total. Usually consisting of a word or two at a time. This was TWO WHOLE SENTENCES. Why does he want to see me in his office? Why does he want the files he gave Miss Hill? Am I in trouble? Is SHE in trouble? My mind starts to flood with endless questions, as I'm barely able to spit out a "Yes Mr. Li."

Miss Hill opens her mouth to protest, but before anything can escape, Mr. Li is speaking again.

"Is something wrong Miss Hill?"

"I just thought that," Mr. Li looks up from his paper work for the first time during the meeting now. "No, Mr. Li" she says as she looks down at the table.

"Very good, now let's continue." His head goes back down to the stack of papers in front of him, as the VP starts the meeting again.

I walk down the long, dimly lit hallway to Mr. Li's office. My palms sweating and my hands trembling with the files he requested I bring with me. I pause when I get to his door, taking in a long deep breath before lightly knocking.

"Come in Miss Reins."

I step in to see this beautiful, enormous office. The left and right hand walls are nothing but huge built in bookshelves, floor to ceiling, wall to wall. Completely full of books. I wonder if he's read all of those, I silently think to myself. The center of the room has a small black loveseat with two black oval chairs either side, suede by the looks of them, with a glass table sitting in front. Lastly there is his desk. Gorgeous black a white marble topped, with the newest laptop sitting off to the left hand side at an angle, papers and files on the right hand side neatly stacked and organized, and few photo frames. A single chair sat opposite his. I'd have to say though, the best part of the office would have to be the huge glass windows behind his desk overlooking the beautiful view of the city.

"Please have a seat."

He gestures to the chair in front of his desk, and I quickly take a seat.

"Did you bring the files from Miss Hill?"

"Yes Mr. Li" I stammer as I hand them over.

"Good, now do you know why I called you here this evening?" I shake my head in response as he starts flipping through the files.

"You've only been with our company for two months, and you've managed to bypass almost all of our team members in our marketing department. Why is that?"

I can feel my cheeks start to heat up, I start to fiddle with my fingers as I look away from him.

"Well, my mom was head of the marketing department in my dad's company. That's where you would find me any chance I got, I loved learning everything I could from her. They died in a plane crash my last year of school, when I was supposed to join her full time to keep learning everything possible for when I got to take over the role. But after their deaths, my uncle took over and turned the company into his, and wouldn't allow me the position. And so I ended up here, with the help of my friend, Miss Lin. She helped me get the position here, since she works in your financial department."

I sit in the chair, staring down at my hands in an uncomfortable silence for what feels like an eternity before I finally lift my head and look at him. This time though, instead of his face being buried in the papers, he's actually looking at me. This is the first time I've actually gotten a good look at his face, and it's like looking at a god. He has the perfect jawline and face structure, lips that look so soft and kissable, and my god... the most beautiful emerald green eyes that just draw you in and lock you in a trance. I can't look away...

I manage to pull myself out of it, fearing that I might be drooling all over myself just looking at him, and look back down at my hands.

"I'm sorry Mr. Li I didn't mean to throw all of that at you."

He closes the file and hands it back over to me. I look at him with a questioning look on my face.

"Miss Reins, I'm sorry for the loss, and about your uncle. I personally think you'll be a great candidate for the marketing team management position. With a little more training, I believe you'll be able to climb up to the position within a couple months. So with that being said, I'd like for you to take over this file from Miss Hill."

I look at him like I'm a deer in the headlights, I feel so shocked and lost. Is he being serious? He can't be serious. I'm so lost in thought that I almost blank him comeplely.

"Miss Reins.. Miss Reins do we have an understanding?"

I mentally slap myself to clear the thoughts, and cautiously take the files back from him.

"Are you serious Mr. Li? This isn't some kind of joke or.."

"Do I look like I'm joking with you Miss Reins?" he asks in a very serious tone.

"No... I'm sorry for accusing. Thank you very much for the opportunity Mr. Li. I won't let you down."

I nearly jump from my seat from excitement, a huge smile plastered onto my face. I clench the files tightly to my c.h.e.s.t as I make my way to the door, continuously thanking him. As I'm about to open the door to leave, he says one last thing.

"And Miss Reins, I expect to see you in my office at this time at the end of each week, for evaluations on your progress with the work I'll be assigning you from here on out."

I quickly nod in agreement as I step out of his office, but I can't help but get this feeling that there's more to this than meets the eye. But hey, this is an opportunity of a lifetime, I'm finally getting to the position of my dreams, I can't just pass it up! And plus, I'll be seeing Mr. Li personally in his office every week. With his looks, who could pass this up?!
