Chapter 23 “Underground Morgue Part 1”

Below?

What is underground in a hospital? Parking lot?

We’ve been in the parking lot already and flipped it inside out.

But what’s further down?

Dawn was shocked by his own imagination and gulped out of what came to his head.

Further below… isn’t that where they store the dead bodies, the morgue?

What exact species is my new tenant?

But no matter what, I’ve seen a haunted ghost already. What am I acting so afraid of for?

The morgue was a place that hospitals traditionally used to store the corpses of the deceased. Unfortunately, it’s also a topic of attraction for those bored and with too much time. Therefore, to prevent such entities from slipping in for a joy ride, the public patient elevators cannot connect with this floor. Compounding this issue, the Twilight Central Hospital had been built early on in the city’s development, meaning they had a special partnership with the nearby medical university to house some of the bodies for preservation.

As it so happens, Dawn entered the hospital’s morgue once when his parents passed away here, which meant he also knew where the morgue was and the tunnel used to transport the bodies between the two facilities. Now that’s good news. They didn’t need to run around without any clue to the location. The problem was though there were guards at the checkpoints to prevent outsiders from entering without permission.

“We need to find a way to get in,” Dawn said with a troubled face.

“Isn’t the solution obvious? Remember the trick I used to carry you both last time?” Boink followed up with a cheeky grin.

He snapped his paw and enveloped their party in a mist of haze to camouflage their existence. In the eyes of those looking from the outside, they don’t exist right now.

“Okay, let’s sneak in from the edge of the passage.” After Boink finished speaking, he made sure to glance over to the catling provocatively to imply can you do that?

With Boink’s “camouflage,” the team successfully bypassed the attention of the security guards and entered the underground tunnel where it leads to the main rooms housing the bodies. Since it was so far underground, the temperature naturally dropped by several degrees due to the nature of things. Then adding in the dim lighting, there’s an uncomfortable gloominess in this place that highlights the large iron door at the end of the tunnel.

“Let me sneak in and see if I can open the door from the other side.” Boink jumped down from Dawn’s shoulder and squeezed through the two-finger gap at the edge. Thankfully he’s a hamster, otherwise it would be a real drag to find a way to break this door down.

“You able to open it? Don’t hurt yourself if it’s too hard.” Dawn warns.

“Wait a minute, I’ll get it done in a sec.”

Soon, there’s a quick “clicking” sound, followed by the rigid creaking of metal against metal as the door swung open.

“He is really good at lockpicking.” Shadow lightly smiled and sighed at the hamster’s skill.

“Of course, I’m professional.” Boink took this as a compliment and frankly admitted.

“But last time you said you were professional in the spiritual field…” Dawn couldn’t help but complain about how easily the hamster changed his mind.

“That’s because I am versatile?” Boink forked his waist and didn’t back down.

“Then that’s great. I love your versatility.” Dawn smiles so they can drop the subject.

First stepping through, the guy’s view immediately got welcomed by the tarnished yellow tiles of the previous era. It’s pretty apparent the hospital didn’t spend much of their budget on this underground facility. But no matter, a place where corpses are stored didn’t need these sorts of superficial things anyway. What did matter though were the storage cabinets used to house their bodies.

When Dawn took his first whiff of the air inside this morgue, he involuntarily choked at the intense disinfectant smell. It’s intense and fresh, a sign that someone’s been here lately. Thankfully they were clued in on this. Right after they bypassed the first three smaller rooms after confirming they weren’t it, the fourth door in the hall suddenly swung open and out came a man donning a doctor’s white attire!
