13 - Chaos

“You stay here!”

Yuuki, known for his fast feet, ran outside in the blink of an eye.

Flustered, by the time I ran out after him, I couldn’t see Yuuki’s back anywhere.

For now, I began to run in the direction of the violent explosions.

But how did enemies find us here? If anywhere should’ve been discovered, it should’ve been the headquarters.

I finally found the site of the explosions: it was complete chaos.

The guards had engaged the enemy troops, and somehow the front and rear guards managed to surround them with the weapons they had on hand, but compared to the combatants on the front lines, their equipment was sub-par and their skills also left something to be desired.

And what’s more, the enemy wrapped in camo fatigues were Akkad and his unit.

My saving grace was that Akkad hasn’t seen me yet. He was probably where all the explosions were coming from, which was a little ways away from me.

I realized that I might be next to that man soon, and I couldn’t calm down. My heart was beating out of my chest, and my blood rushed to my head. I couldn’t suppress my body’s excitement.

Get a hold of yourself, me. The fact of the matter is that in these sorts of situations, our top priority is to not allow the central pillar of defense to crumble before the allied Kaijin arrive: I have to help hold off the enemy.

I relaxed my breathing and readied my beam-gun. I had them go all the way back to the Gilgamesh factory to retrieve it, my beloved gun.

I could feel my concentration rapidly increasing. The sensation of my line of sight growing narrow. I was not afraid of anything. I did not feel anything. I held the heavy barrel of the gun firm, without the slightest bit of shaking, and I pulled the trigger.

One shot. Two shots. Three shots…

“Found you”

A voice I could never forget blew into my ears.

Arms like steel coiled around my torso from behind, and in the next instant, my world was dyed pure white.

BANNNGGGGG

I was surrounded by Akkad’s shield, and an explosion went off before my eyes.

Shit. I forgot myself.

“There’s no way…”

In one hit, the shield was obliterated.

The flash of the explosion gradually faded and my vision cleared up enough to see that, besides me, all combatants had collapsed onto the ground, limp.

Among this miserable scene, where not a single sound was made, I discovered a familiar figure. I gasped.

I shook off Akkad’s arms and ran off.

“Ah! Yuuki!”

“Hey.”

“Yuuki! Yuukiii!!”

I noticed Akkad frowning with dissatisfaction in the corner of my eye, but that couldn’t have anything to do with me.

I hugged Yuuki, trying to check his injuries.

“He’s fine. I held back, so no one should have died.”

Akkad breathed out a heavy sigh, and once again wrapped his arms around my body and forcefully picked me up. Confused, I held my precious gun to my chest.

Is he taking me with him?

Crap. Shit. My heart was beating even faster.

“Alex, hurry up.”

A stupidly cheerful voice echoed out, and the squirming figure of an enemy combatant appeared before us.

I couldn’t believe it. How had he managed to survive that blast?

“Ah, I’m already done.”

“So this kid’s your wifey?”1

The owner of the voice peered down at my face with a wide grin. 9 times out of 10, people who smile like that with a mouth full of sparkly white teeth are Americans.

“Mn. This is Hiroto.”

“Ergh. You don’t mean Hiroto No. 1? The ace sniper?!”

The (provisional) American leaned away from me with a face of growing horror. What the hell’s his problem? I didn’t think you guys would know my name either.

“Great, let’s head back.”

Akkad gathered my shoulders up in his arms, and allowed for his troops and even my injured allies to quickly apply first aid.

“You’re retreating? You’re not going to invade any further?”

“Ensuring your safety comes first.”

The (provisional) American gave me a vigorous thumbs-up right in front of my nose.

“If the wifey hadn’t been in this area, we planned to search from hell and back until we did.”

Why would they go so far for my sake? Did Akkad actually think of me as a lover? But before I could ask they started running.

“Tch.”

The moment Akkad clicked his tongue, everyone became tense and alert.

We’d left the building and were moving through the island’s forest. The unit was cleverly spread out.

“It’s coming from below us!”

GUR-GUR-GURGLE…

With a thunderous roar, a dark red tentacle burst out of the ground, writhing through the air.

“It’s the Mongolian Death Worm,” I unconsciously muttered.

“FIRE!”

In a flash, fire erupted from the troops’ guns.

TL: me, staring at the onomatopoeia, sweating.
