14 - Limit

“That guy’s your ally, right? You don’t need to fight, just stay here.”

While the rest of the unit was keeping the Death Worm occupied, Akkad set me down on a tree root and deployed his shield device.

The tentacle crawling out of the ground was lifted into the air, and you could see the hazy figure of a humanoid on the other side of the dust.

“An earth type.”

“They have poison and electric attacks, too,” I added on to the (provisional) American’s prediction, and Akkad swung his head over to me in surprise.

I could feel him staring hard enough to hurt. I did not look back at him, and stared pointedly at the Death Worm.

I’m a Humbaba android. But, just a little while ago, you didn’t kill my companions for my sake.

Shouldn’t it be fine to give you this level of advice, just so that your own companions won’t die?

“My lady, this can’t be.”

A loud and clear voice echoed over the area. At the same time, silver-colored light poured down on us.

“Ugh!”

“What the!?”

""

The troops’ knees hit the ground, as if something was crushing down on them, and the trees in the area began to creak and groan, some even splitting and breaking open.

“I thought you’d be in one of the offices. You can imagine how flustered I was when I found out that you had gone into battle. On top of that, you’re even leaking information about our Kaijin to the enemy.”

Radiating a ring of light, a silvery luminescent clump slowly descended from the skies.

I couldn’t be sure just from that dazzling silhouette. But that had to be…

“Gray!” 1

“Gravity manipulation. How troublesome.”

Akkad struck his chest with his hand.

“Transform!”

Brrrrruuummmm!

“Shit, I can’t move my body!”

“You guys take care of the Death Worm! I’ll take on Gray!”

Akkad and his men were having a hard time.

Everyone in Akkad’s unit was armed with a shield. It’s no wonder that they weren’t done in by Akkad’s explosion. The shield was built together with their weapons as a set, so even though the energy from their guns passed through them, they didn’t experience any heat or recoil.

Unfortunately, gravity was not something a shield could defend against.

“What the hell is this thing! Wiggling all over the place! It looks like a disgusting piece of spaghetti, so why is it so fucking tough!”

WHISH! SWISH! WAM!

The unit had managed to stop the Death Worm from moving with a barrage of attacks, but that was the best they could manage. Akkad and Gray’s fist fight was at a stalemate, and each was trying to crack open the other’s defenses with a finishing move.

“Destroy the tentacles! If you concentrate your attacks on one tentacle at a time, you should be able to cut them off!”

“It’s impossible! If we try to concentrate our fire, they just come at us with another arm!”

“Gyaa!”

One of the soldiers’ shields was hit so hard, he flipped over and crashed into the ground.

The attack destroyed his shield, and a tentacle laden with electricity approached him from above.

“NOOOO!”

At that pivotal moment.

PING!

“Wha— Hiroto!”

“Wifey!?”

My gun shot through the Death Worm’s tentacle.

PING! PING! PING!

I pulled the trigger continuously, shooting each tentacle one after the other so that it could not move.

Getting shot with high output energy-bullets was clearly weakening the Death Worm’s vitality.

“Wifey, you’re awesome!”

“They say that the absent-minded ones are the best at shooting. I’m quite the dreamer,” I quietly replied, without a single change in my expression,

“Damn it! The was fucking cool!” someone cheered.

“Alright! Everybody, Concentrate your strongest fire on the torso! We’re gonna knock them out in one go!”

“Yessir!”

“Now that is troubling.”

Despite being in the middle of facing off against Akkad, Gray’s quiet voice disrupted our reenergized morale.

“Seriously, what a troublesome person. My body isn’t even ready to be pushed this much, but it seems I’ll have no choice to bring out enough power to kill myself.”

Gray lifted both of his palms up towards the sky, and the silver light grew stronger. For a moment everything became weightless, and then a level of Gs incomparable to before descended upon us.

BRRRRM

“Uugh!”

“Guwaah!”

Even the thickest trees started cracking open, and the men crumbled to their feet.

In the midst of this scene of destruction, I was left standing, paralyzed in shock.

“Hiroto-san, I did not apply my gravity to you. Now, If you want to save them, come with me.”

Gray pointed his index finger at me. The tip of it was lit with light.

“OWW!”

“Like I’ll let you!”

Akkad unsheathed his sword. He conducted power through the blade, sharpening it, and summoned photospheres to the surface. However, compared to how he moved before, it was easy to see that he was struggling.

So this is it, huh.

“I understand.”

I felt a rush of pain, like my chest was being pulled and tied into knots. We came this far, but we’re already separating again.

I closed my eyes once, and then opened them. As long as he lived, I would be able see Akkad again.

I took a single step towards Gray.

“You can’t even protect the one person you like, isn’t that rich?”

The sound of an engine roared, and a giant shadow descended over us from the sky.

At the same time the silver light disappeared. The men who’d fallen onto the ground began to pick themselves up, groaning.

“I finished up the attack on the main building. While we were at it, I tried poking my nose around, and I found this thing out in the open in a random terminal. It’s pretty fucking easy to control.”

“Thank you, Genia!”

She had red hair and almost black eyes. Slender limbs. She was a beautiful woman, and with a facial expression like ice, she jumped out of the stealth drone she came with.

“Rush him while we have the anti-gravity device!”

The beautiful woman closed her eyes and thrust out her two hands. Using her brainwaves, she had the drone rush towards Gray.

BAM! BAM! BAM!

The drone’s suicide bombing gouged open a hole in his defenses, and without a moment of hesitation, I and the rest of the unit hit him with beams and rifle ammunitions, while Akkad launched photospheres at him.

“AAAAUGHH!”

Gray’s anguished scream rang out, and Akkad threw himself up into the air.

“Eat this!”

In mid-air, his stance changed, and he bore done on him with the tenacity and heft of a giant carnivorous feline. Those few seconds seemed to slow down, and I saw Akkad’s right leg clad in blinding light sink into Gray’s stomach.

ROOOAAARRR!

The area was blown away by the explosion.

TL: Such tokusatsu vibes lmao. Also, the onomatopoeia has left me crying. SO MUCH. I think the drone flew with the help of an anti-grav device, which is why they were able to use it against Gray, but it’s pretty hard to tell from the raws.

Footnotes

So you know how all the Kaijin are UMA (unidentified mysterious creatures)? Gray is a Grey Alien. When I first read this, I thought he was a werewolf for some reason and I was so confused lmao. I’m just dumb
