Doctor Cho had served as Doktor Satow’s assistant 1 when he was in college overseas, so he could be called a specialist in android genetics and physiology.

“Hiroto-san’s body managed to do fertilization and implantation under his own power. However, after the implantation of the fertilized egg comes fetal development and childbirth, which is going to need a hand on our part to make work. Before anything else, our first problem is the size of the placenta. The growth of the fetus will influence whether or not the placenta will be small, but luckily Doktor Satow left the surgical scar from the initial operation, so we should be fine as long as we operate in the same place, adjusting the incision to fit the size of the fetus.”

Doctor Cho said that they could collect the blood from the afterbirth, and put me back together like new2.

“The second problem is the shape of your pelvis. Hiroto-san’s pelvis is not meant for childbirth. The same can be said of normal women as well. For example, compared to other races, Asian people tend to have a greater burden in childbirth. Their slender pelvis is smaller, and it’s difficult for the fetus to come out. Similarly, as a male, Hiroto-san, on top of your pelvis having difficulty opening up, the state of your birth canal is…”

“Unpassable?”

Doctor Cho nodded.

“You can’t expect a natural childbirth. It’d be best if we performed a Cesarean. However, in order to do that, we’ll need to open up a large hole in your specially reinforced abdomen.”

A wrinkle formed between the doctor’s eyebrows. We quietly waited for him to continue.

“Forget combat androids, there is no precedent for any android having a C-section… If I know Doktor Satow, he must have hypothesized a solution. If you want a safe childbirth, you’ll have to acquire his research results.”

Gathering the top executives, an emergency meeting was held.

This was the first I was hearing of it, but Humbaba’s headquarters, Research Department, and their attaché of combat androids had all suffered huge losses, enough that it would take more than three months to recover. Furthermore, the whereabouts of Doktor Satow and his Kaijin was unknown; even the main lab was completely cleared out, research materials and all.

“We need to find Doktor Satow.”

“The Intelligent Department already got a hit.”

Mark held up a pointer to a spot on the holographic map.

“An underground facility in the middle of the desert. The Kaijin are also there.”

“How many?”

“Gray and the Deathworm. There’s another one, but they’re an unknown; it seems the Doktor is still producing more Kaijin.

“Gray… and on top of that, an unknown Kaijin.”

There was a stir in the room.

“We can’t gather any more information?”

“While we’re twiddling our thumbs, waiting around, they could finish developing more Kaijin.”

“We have three opponents. Our best chance of winning against a new type of Kaijin is when they’re still inexperienced.”

“Genia, what’s the output for the anti-gravity device?”

“It’s been upgraded, but Gray should have also made some progress.”

“The Deathworm is also a pain in the ass. It should be able to move even better in the sand.”

At once, the room grew lively with murmurs.

“Then I’ll go, too.”

The conference room once again became deathly quiet. Everyone’s eyes fell on me.

“What are you thinking? You’re pregnant3.”

Akkad quickly walked over to me and grabbed my shoulder. He spoke in a harsh tone of voice.

I didn’t even flinch.

“That’s exactly why I should go. The Kaijin won’t attack me, especially now that I’m pregnant. When we were fighting Gray, he didn’t even try to touch me. If I go in, I should be able to create an opening. And in the unlikely case that the strategy fails, I can at least let all of you run away.”

“But there’s still the issue of your brainwashing. You can’t disobey Doktor Satow.”

“I’ve been wondering about that. When you were still stuck in my honeytrap, I succumbed to my survival instincts half-way through and abandoned my orders. Besides, the Doktor is a research-obsessed idiot, so there’s no way he’d let anything rash happen to the person carrying such a valuable child.”

Akkad looked over at Doctor Cho, “David, stop him.”

“Doctor, even if you stop me now, I will go. …It’s better to have as much attack power as possible. We’re out of options. And on the off chance that I am captured, regroup and come save me.”

“Hiroto. Please stop this. Just wait for us here.”

Akkad’s voice finally took on a hint of begging.

“I’m going because I can’t just wait for you. If you guys get slaughtered, what’ll happen to me and the child? We don’t know if you’ll be able to handle whatever attacks those guys will throw at you, and all for the sake of a safe birth…”

I swallowed a thick glob of spit.

“We may have no choice but to obey Doktor Satow in the end, anyway.”

Akkad fell silent. His back faced the light, so his face was covered in shadow, making it difficult to read his emotions.

“…That’s right. Hiroto was this sort of person,” after a long silence, Akkad spoke in a groaning voice, as though he was being wrung out. Forcefully smiling, his face seemed to be on the brink of tears.

“Hiroto was a person who fought with all his might.”

On the day of the battle, I put on a combat uniform with desert camouflage.

I wasn’t used to wearing it, but Sumer’s camo pattern was designed pretty well. Though Humbaba’s silver on black battle-suits will always be the coolest.

“Camo really suits you.”

Akkad was happily taking pictures. Stop it. You’re totally putting a damper on the tension of the situation.

Akkad put all sorts of conditions on my deployment.

“Unless we specifically call for you, stay on standby until the battle is over. If you’re providing backup, only long-range shooting. And if the order comes down to evacuate, you need to retreat immediately.”

Doctor Cho expressed his concerns for the effect on his body, not so much the vigorous movement of his body, but the stress on his brain.

“Hiroto-san’s brain is currently in an extremely unstable state. If his brain were to catch a high fever, it’d need to be immediately suppressed. …I really want to send you out with a medical response team, but that’s impossible. I’ve made some antipyretic medicine, so if the brain monitor’s alarm goes off, make sure to take it immediately.”

I had been instructed to attach a small device to my head, to measure my brain waves.

Just before deployment, Akkad and I met up behind the air hangar and hugged, praying for success.

For the first time, I took the initiative to kiss Akkad.

“It’s time. I’ll be heading out first.”

Genia and I saw them off, as Akkad’s team piled into the transport planes and flew away into the sky.

Footnotes

弟子 lit. disciple, follower, student-assistant they could mean a couple things, since the literal tl is “we’ll use this (the collected blood from the afterbirth) to make a new thing like original/to the original”. I think they’re saying that they return the blood to Hiroto’s body “where it originated’, or that they’re going to return Hiroto’s body to what it was originally (either with uterus or without uterus) 身重 lit. pregnant, but it’s a different word from what they’ve been using, 妊娠. The kanji directly mean ‘person of importance’, so it could also be interpreted as Hiroto, as a pregnant person, is too important to go
