20 - Strategy

I set off on a separate plane with Genia. As we got closer to the desert, my eyes felt like they would get sunburned, and my pupils quickly adjusted.

“I want to make my eyelashes longer.”

“Can eyelashes get longer?”

I was just speaking to myself when Genia asked, incredibly curious.

“No, but I heard the Desert Unit could ask for their eyelashes to be lengthened, so I was thinking it would’ve been nice if I’d thought of it beforehand.”

Not even a fragment of one of the clouds boasting 0% annual precipitation could be seen in the sky. The atmosphere was dry from the direct sunlight blazing down on us. Without a single oasis in sight, the Doktor’s research facility was in the middle of this desert.

Akkad, Mark, and the others were deployed first, flying in on a transport vessel, which would land at the relay point. From there they’d approach on foot, and stay in the neighboring area of the coordinates identified on the map. The plan was that Genia and I would rendezvous with them later with the anti-gravity device, providing air and high-ground support.

Genia suddenly stood up. She opened the rear door, and her lace one-piece fluttered in the strong winds1.

It was decided that we would first fire missiles from the plane, destroying their defense systems, and then Genia would lay waste to them with a torrent of bullets from the drone.

“Our target has entered range.”

“Preparations complete. We’re ready to go whenever.”

I heard Akkad’s voice through the communicator.

“Then we’re going in.”

BANG BANG BANG!!

On Genia’s signal, the barrage of missiles drew parabolas through the sky.

 BOOM BOOM BOOM

They exploded far in the distance.

The signal to start the battle.

“Deploying the drone!”

Genia detached the drone and took off. 2

The facility’s automatic counter-strike systems responded to our missile fire, sending out a drone of their own.

It quickly became a mid-air battle between drones, but Genia swiftly spun the drone around to circle behind the enemy and fire at its rear, taking it out.

“It looks like it’s AI-controlled. When I made an unexpected move, it’s response was a little stiff.”

I don’t think just AIs would get stiff when faced with those sort of unexpected maneuvers.

In an instant, she had destroyed the enemy drone.

Even among humans, there existed monsters.

“Destruction of the counter strike system, complete. Sky-Drone is on standby.”

“Well done”

In the middle of the waves of beautiful sand dunes, a giant, gaping hole had appeared. Because of the missile attack, the sand that had heavily accumulated was blown away, and the bedrock hidden below was revealed.

“Below that rock is the research facility.”

If I squint my eyes, I could see the first group moving through the desert. It was difficult to tell with the dessert camo pattern, but that was Akkad’s team. Even in a place with such bad footholds, they were able to run at high speeda.

They arrived at the target coordinates, quickly dropped into the crater that had been wrought into the bedrock, and began drilling a hole to penetrate into the inner sanctum.

However.

GUOOONNNN

An echoing howl roared through the desert.

At that moment, something similar to a long tail rose up, having been buried under a mountain of sand beside the hole.

“It’s huge!!”

“What is that… A Kaibutsu3?! It looks like a dinosaur!!”

The giant black body, tinged faintly greenish-blue, kicked up the sand as it stood up. It’s full silhouette looked like a plesiosaur.

OOOOOOONNN

The Kaibutsu’s cry rose up towards the heavens; suddenly, water suddenly began to pour out of its giant body all at once. It opened its mouth wide enough to split, and a huge amount of water came spewing out.

“W-Woah! How the hell is it making so much water!”

“It’s taking the hydrogen from fossil fuels found in the desert, forcing it to bind it with oxygen from the air, generating water, and then probably storing it within its body? But the fact that it’s able to do it on such a large scale is really incredible.”

“I see… but this is not the time to be impressed! We have to help them!”

GOGOGOGOGOGOH

The water Nessie poured out rushed down to the bottom of the crater in the naked bedrock in a massive wave.

Akkad grabbed a hold of as many comrades as he could and jumped out of the way, but Mark’s group got swallowed up by the water.

They’ve received aquatic training, but the armor they had equipped was acting like an anchor. If they don’t reach a sand dune soon, their stamina will quickly get depleted as they struggle, and they will drown.

""

“There was an urban legend. Androids that had been left to die in the wastes suddenly would come back alive because of a sudden rain.”

“Stop it. I don’t like how likely that is.”

The truth was that androids in a near death state couldn’t move on their own until they received a reboot command…  unless water became the command.

The spat-out water collected into the low areas of the bedroom, and in the blink of an eye, it became a lake.

Perhaps it had released all its water, so the monster swung around its long neck and tail and tried to bludgeon the soldiers. Akkad, standing on top of a sand dune, began to attack the monster, drawing away its attention.

“As I expected, it’s harder to control once it exceeds the 100 kilo per person limit… but I’ll make it work!”

Genia had descended the drone to try and save the soldiers.

At the time.

GAGUN. The fuselage of the aircraft shook.

“!”

“The output of the anti-gravity engine is rising!”

Above the lake a silver light spread out.

Gray has arrived.

GAAAAAAAA

The engine started making a concerning noise.

I swiftly readied my beam-gun toward the Gray-ish body of light and fired.

“Fufufu… It’s even more painful than I had thought, for you to personally point your gun at me. …But, if I can clear this trial, I will have you in hand!”

Even as he made such a melancholic monologue, Gray stopped the beam with his hand. The energy bullet was extinguished when it touched his hand without dealing any damage.

“That…!”

He’s too strong,

However, until Genia finished the rescue operation, I had to buy time somehow.

Gray flew at recklessly fast speeds through the air, chasing after us. In order to shake off Gray’s pursuit,  I had the autopilot initiate evasive maneuvers, zigzagging and pushing the accelerator. I was stuck inside the violently shaking fuselage, but somehow I managed to maintain my firing stance and shot rapid-fire. I forced Gray, who’d been gradually gaining ground, to grow panicked.

SHIIIIT! That was scary!

“Thanks, Hiroto! Rescue complete! Sasha incoming!”

“Don’t chase after other people’s wives!”

DOGOH!!

Gray was suddenly kicked, Akkad’s knee digging into Gray’s side, and the two fell into the desert below. Akkad, who had transformed, switched opponents 4 with Genia.

“Hah, a wife? All you did was take advantage of Hiroto-san during a moment of weakness; this is just the result of you doing whatever you please. If I had met Hiroto-san just a little sooner, the one holding him would have been me.”

“What sort of nonsense are you saying5? Hiroto has been madly in love with me from way back, from his body to his soul. Every night we sleep in the same bed, and he even gives me kisses.”6

The two stood up from where they fell, glaring at each other openly.

…Why are they so pissy at each other? Let’s just pretend I can’t hear them.

Genia began attacking the Kaibutsu with the other soldiers. I also switched targets to Nessie.

But… For some reason, I get the feeling that we forgot something important.

Actually, now that I think about it, where’s the Deathworm?

“Hiroto, watch out!”

“Eh.”

From the corner of my eye, a slimy tentacle crawled toward me.

It could even stick on to an airplane!?

PING!

I promptly shot the tentacle.

However, it was already too close, and I was afraid I would damage the plane. It’s no use.

In an instant, the slippery and slimy tentacle had coiled around my body.

“HIROTO!!”

“Stay back! Genia!”

For some reason, this thing didn’t even glance at Genia and continued to grope my body.

You’re a fucking tentacle and you have the gall to ignore a beautiful woman?

Juuh

“!”

I noticed the tip of the tentacle smeared in a liquid, and I shivered in fear.

I thought that the Kaijin wouldn’t attack me, but this thing really didn’t have anything like ‘reason’.

The toxic mucus began to dissolve my camo uniform.

“Stop!!”

“Stop this at once! Deathworm!”

Akkad screamed from the ground. Even Gray, in an agitated voice, tried to restrain the Deathworm, but it would not stop.

Did it want to melt me for an easier meal? My camo uniform was already full of holes, the pieces of fabric held together by threads. The Humbaba combat uniform I wore underneath wouldn’t last much longer.

“Oh, that’s hot…”7

“What an erotic… Aah… Hiroto-san…”

“Oh my god! A sexy black catsuit and slimy tentacles look so pretty on Hiroto’s white skin, it’s obscene!”

“The fuck is going on!?”

I said stay back, but could you not broadcast the situation on air, Genia!! Even Mark commented!

At this rate, I’m just going to get eaten.

I moved my restrained arms and readied my gun. I scraped together my concentration, and somehow aimed at my target.

PING!

GYAOOON!

The beam I fired penetrated through one of the giant water Kaibutsu’s eyes.

Another shot. If I take it down, then someone can come help me.

But as I tried to line up my next shot, the tentacle crawling around my body traced up the nape of my neck.

“Hyanh.”

I let slip such a shameful scream.

In that instant, the gravity Gray had so far kept under control he somehow let slip, and the large plane lurched violently. On the rebound, my foot slipped, and the tentacle and I plummeted towards the ground.

TL: I usually think random sexual scenes are annoying, but this story has been so heavy the past couple chapters that honestly I appreciated the levity.

ALSO, sorry for not updating! I wanted to get it done before February, but then new semester, new schedule, same stress, and suddenly February is almost over ;v; . Funnily enough, I ended up translating these four chapters about once a week, but for some reason I wanted to post them together? Anyway, now that I’ve more or less settled into my schedule, I’ll try and get this project finished in two or three more updates.

Footnotes

I don’t know why she’s wearing a dress… seems impractical So it’s super hard to tell, but I think Genia is  controlling it from the back of the plane, but she might have boarded it?? 怪物 lit. monster. It’s the same formation as Kaijin and Kaiju. Kaibutsu is an actual word whereas the other two are neologisms, but in context with the other two, it’s probably being used categorically 怪物の相手 lit. opponent Kaibutsu. 寝言 lit. sleeptalk, nonsense I’m sorry. It just sounds so fucking funny. Akkad uses the word メロメロ, which makes the whole thing sound like ‘he’s super-duper head over heels in love with me!’, so it sounds really childish lmao It’s clear in Japanese bc of speech style, but this is Akkad
