Unexpected

Shi An was vaguely looking forward to summer vacation even before he finished his final exams.

He needed a break.

He had been a little too tired lately.

On the last day of finals, with only the last two subjects left, Shi An felt a sense of relief that he hadn’t felt in a long time.

At eleven in the morning, the morning exam was over, and there was almost an hour of study time left.

Shi An went to the restroom and returned to the hallway, where he took out his cell phone that was in his book bag.

He had set the phone to silent because of the exam. However, he didn’t expect that when the screen was turned on, the screen full of missed calls would catch his eye.

He had never had so many missed calls in his phone at once, the image was too powerful. Shi An stared at the screen, slightly stunned.

Several unfamiliar numbers, and more than 20 missed calls from Yan Zhao

If it was not a particularly important matter, Yan Zhao usually would not call him, especially today when there were exams ongoing.

Shi An’s fingertips were slightly sweaty, leaving stains on the screen.

He tapped the callback button, and before he could put the phone to his ear, Yan Zhao had already answered.

Shi An’s heartbeat was uncontrollably heavy again.

“Xiao An, can you come out now? I’m in front of the school,” Yan Zhao’s voice sounded urgent, “Come out first, come out and I’ll talk to you.”

Shi An’s head went numb, and his heart and throat choked violently.

Shi An immediately thought of a possibility that he did not want to think about. His fingertips trembled slightly. With the fastest speed, he stuffed the phone back into the bag, forgetting to explain to the teacher as he rushed out of the building.

His head was blank, and he ran as fast as he could.

It was already hot, the heat snaking upward from the concrete floor. He was soon a little out of breath, sweat dripping into his eyes.

His heart was cold, his fingertips were cold, and he was chilled from his scalp to his spine.

Yan Zhao had really parked his car and waited in front of the school.

During class time, the street in front of the school was very empty. Yan Zhao leaned on the car door, and Shi An could see him at a glance.

Shi An ran over, holding the car door and panting heavily, eyes staring at Yan Zhao without blinking.

“…You get in,” Yan Zhao pulled open the back seat door and gestured for him to get in, “We’ll talk on the way.”

Shi An still raised his eyes to stare at him, “…Who had an accident?”

Yan Zhao lowered his eyes and rubbed his hair, not opening his mouth.

“…Is it my grandma?”

Yan Zhao nodded slightly.

The blackness in front of his eyes was really not an adjective. Shi An held the car door, his body shape was a little shaky.

That winter night three years ago was seared into his heart, and the fears he had hidden to death deep inside him came to light suddenly and unexpectedly.

Growing more and more.

Shi An bent down deeply, his forehead resting against his forearm.

Years later, Jiang Yuan’s physical condition had not been quite right. She had been reluctant to go to the hospital for checkups, but she did occasionally go to the hospital a few times. She was just prescribed some medicines and supplements. The doctor only said that she was getting older and it was fine.

Why didn’t he care?

Shi An put his head against the car door, raised it slightly, and then slammed it down.

With a muffled sound, Yan Zhao’s hands holding the steering wheel trembled suddenly. He opened his mouth, but couldn’t lift it up in one breath, and said nothing.

It was too useless to say anything now.

Yan Zhao sighed, his temples hurt suddenly.

He had only one thought in his mind now.

He very much hoped that Shi An was his son, and he would give Shi An the most beautiful family, the best childhood and love, so that he could grow up to be a bubbly happy child like Yan Liang.

Shi An was just still an underage child.

Why should he bear so much?

Yan Zhao drove the car very fast and arrived at the hospital in ten minutes or so.

Shi An stood in front of the silent building and suddenly felt that he had lost all his strength.

He slowly crouched down, and his pale face was unceremoniously reflected by the transparent glass door.

The memories of three years ago and this moment slowly overlap, bringing a sense of weightlessness that did not distinguish time nor space.

The only thing missing was a pair of peach blossom eyes glowing in the street light, a pair of hands holding him tightly, and a Yan Liang who told him not to be afraid.

Standing in front of the rescue room door, Shi An realized that he was a little out of breath. He put his hands on the white wall, and the cool touch of the tiles made him tremble slightly.

Ten minutes ago, he was still sitting in the classroom, sipping water and waiting for his next test.

Because he had done well in his last subject, he was in a good mood, twirling his black gel pen and watching the sunlight faintly glisten on the plastic pen case.

At the same time, Jiang Yuan was probably suffering from a painful illness.

Shi An turned his head and knocked hard against the wall a few times. Yan Zhao pulled him away with his hands, helplessly placing his palm on his forehead.

The intense pain instead calmed him down as quickly as possible. Shi An took a few deep breaths and gently blocked Yan Zhao’s hand away.

“It’s okay, don’t worry about me.” Shi An sat back on the lounge chair, slightly tilted his head against the back of the chair, maintaining this position and no longer moving.

He didn’t have the strength to move, and he didn’t dare to move.

The sunlight was still very dazzling, and the regular shape of light and shadow reflected on the white wall. Shi An slowly curled his knuckles, and his cold fingertips lightly pressed against his palms.

When Yan Liang found out about Jiang Yuan’s hospitalization, he had already finished his last exam.

The dusk sun always carried a heavy sense of weariness. The sky was still bright, but the desks and chairs in the classroom had been covered with a warm tone of sunset color, revealing a little bit of sadness.

The air in the classroom was boiling.

The first summer vacation as a high school student came with the sound of cheering and ping-pong ball knocking on the table.

Yan Liang returned to Class 15 and began to pack his textbooks.

The phone was turned off and silently stuffed in the compartment of the bag. He took the phone out and just turned on the screen when the WeChat sent by Yan Zhao popped out.

[Are you done with the exam?]

[I have something to tell you…]

[Jiang jie had an accident…she was in the emergency room this morning and didn’t come out until after 4:00.]

[I’m at the city hospital. You want to go home first or what?]

[Xiao An has been sitting here all day, he hasn’t finished his exams, he hasn’t even eaten, why don’t you come and keep him company? I don’t know what to do…]

Yan Liang slowly opened his eyes wide, and a collapsing roar went through his head.

The memory was dragged unguarded to three years ago, when the half-grown teenager sat with a pale face in the car, his eyes slightly stained red, his amber eyes looking helplessly at him.

At that time Shi An looked so fragile, the whole person was like a wisp of light smoke. It seemed easy to make him disappear completely.

Yan Liang’s palm suddenly became cold, just like the temperature on Shi An’s fingertips that winter night three years ago.

How did Shi An feel when he heard that Jiang Yuan was in the emergency room?

How would he feel waiting alone in front of the emergency room?

Would he be scared?

Would he be helpless?

Would his fingertips still be so cold?

Yan Liang slowly turned off the phone screen, feeling a little at a loss for a while. His heart seemed to be grabbed by someone, and it was tightened little by little until he was almost out of breath.

God, can he teleport?

He just wanted to stay by Shi An’s side right away.

Immediately.
