I nervously went through the entrance. The first thing that greeted us was the shiny, polished marble floor.

“It looked as if it had been decorated with the utmost luxury.”

“I agree, they even have a gym and a pool here.”

“Seriously?”

“It says on the sign over there, so I’m sure it’s for real.”

I don’t know what to say, this is just amazing

“I knew your dad was rich but, this rich?! Does your dad do some illegal business or something?!”

“Don’t be rude. He’s just a businessman, an IT guy. Well he is a bit overbearing at times, but he got to this point through honest work. He says “I know I’m walking on the fence, but I’m confident that I won’t fall off.” “

“That doesn’t sound good to me.”

“I’m joking. I mean, he said he was joking. But his eyes were serious.”

I decided to not say anything. Thinking so, I went to the elevator with Kiryu..

“This is incredible…”

What’s incredible is that there are only two rooms on this top floor. In other words, there is only enough room for me and Kiryu and one other family.

“I don’t really mind the little things, but I don’t want a strange family living next to us, you know? I heard that my dad really tried to get the other room, but he couldn’t get it.”

“I see.”

No, if you were going to go that far, wouldn’t it have been cheaper to get a single-family house, even if it was a little smaller?

“Yeah, I think so too. For some reason, my father was obsessed with this apartment. Well, it’s fine. It’s spacious, and we don’t have to worry about it.” (T/N: No quotation in the previous line, she can read minds I suppose. )

With that said, Kiryu opens the front door with the apartment’s card key. The spacious five-bedroom apartment was so big that it could even be used for a party.

“This view is spectacular..”

The best thing about this place is that it’s on a high floor, so the view is fantastic.

“The place is good, isn’t it? Well, it’s expensive, so it’s only natural that it would be good.”

“Is it really that expensive?”

“I suppose. Do you want to hear the price?”

 “Nah, I’m good.”

If I asked, I’m afraid it would blow away all my sense of values I’ve built up over the years.

“If you don’t mind, may I ask a question?”

“Go ahead. If it’s something I can answer.”

“It might be a bit personal.”

“What?”

“Do you have a brother?”

“I’m an only daughter.”

Was that really a sensitive question?  Kiryu tilts her head to look confused, as I shake my head from side to side.

“I mean, you and I are fiancee’s, right?”

“That’s right.”

“So, if you’re an only child and a daughter… if I marry you one day, I will take over the company… right?”

“No.”

“Huh? No?”

“I will be the one to take over the company. And since you’re the son-in-law, you’ll take the Kiryu surname as well. Well, you’re going to join the company, but you’re not going to be a part of the business. Besides, can you even run a business?”

“I’m asking because I don’t think I can.”

“I’m sorry to say this, but what my dad was looking for from you is the blood of a great family from… the East Ninth ( Higashi Kujo ). You don’t have to worry about money, you can just spend your time as a board member.”

“It’s like being a gigolo…”

“You’re not far off the mark. So I’m sorry, but it’s going to be a tame state of affairs really, okay? Your life itself is like living in a prison cell.”

“Wow…”

“However, I’m not gonna tie you down too much. I’ll give you the freedom to do things you want. Well, you know what?”

“What?”

After I asked my question, Kiryu answered in no time, as if it were nothing.

“I wouldn’t really mind you having another woman.”

And said this.

“Bwah!  A woman!? What the h**l are you talking about!?”

“As I said before, I am not sure I can love you. Of course, I will fulfill my duty as a ‘spouse,’ but whether I can act as a ‘lover’ is a bit of a fine line.”

“Indeed. You mentioned that earlier.”

“But then you have to put up with it, right? I’m sorry about that, so…. Oh yeah, just make sure you use birth control, okay? An illegitimate child would be a cause of uproar.” (T/N: ???? )

“Stop talking about contraception and other girls! Don’t you think that’s a bit messed up?”

“I think it’s alright. You can be a little more assertive, you know? This way it’s more selfish of me.”

“No, well, that may be true… but then again, so am I, don’t you think? It’s the same for both of us.”

“I don’t think so. It’s my family’s selfishness for wanting the blood of Higashi Kujo in the first place.”

“Well, our family needs money too.”

“That’s your family, isn’t it? What about yourself? If your family didn’t have debts, would you have taken me as a bride?”

“Well, you have a point. But in that aspect, don’t you–”

Kiryu interrupts my words by holding out her right hand to as if to say “Stop”

“Not just my family. I, myself also wanted the blood of the Higashi Kujo”

“……”

“As I said before, I myself was ridiculed a lot for being an “upstart”. I was so frustrated that people would say, “She’s all about money,” so I studied, exercised, and took care of my beauty regimen. But the harder I tried, the more I was ridiculed as a “success”. I don’t want my children to be miserable like that. That’s why I want my children to have old–‘noble blood’ in them.”

“ “Noble blood” you say?”

“You may not be interested in it yourself, nor  you may not believe it, but it still exists

in our society. Well, it doesn’t have to be “Higashi Kujo”, as long as you are related to that “family”.  You are respected. (T/N: She’s referring to the Five Great Families )

Hearing that, I exhaled.

“In my family this is both my and my father’s request. But in your family, this is only your father’s request. So it wouldn’t be fair if you don’t demand something yourself, right?”

That may have been the case all this time.

That something was amiss, but what is it? There is something that doesn’t make sense. It’s hard to put it into words, but it’s kind of like this:

“Cheating isn’t the same thing, is it?”

“If you don’t have feelings for me in the first place, I don’t think it’s cheating though.”

“No! I don’t mean that kind of wordplay!”

“Well I wouldn’t really mind if you cheat on me. Since, of course, there are some things I can’t do… but I’ll do my best to fulfill your wishes.”

“What’s more unforgivable than being allowed to cheat? Especially while being married.”

“I suppose? Well, we’ll figure it out when the time comes.”

Kiryu then turns her gaze out the window.

“It’s getting dark. Shouldn’t you go home soon?”

“Yeah… What about you?”

“It’s too far to go home from here, so I’m going to stay the night. I have a bed, electricity, water and gas.”

“What about food?”

“There should be some in the fridge.”

Saying this, Kiryu walks toward the refrigerator. I followed her back and saw her open the door of the refrigerator next to the island kitchen.

“Whoa…”

In the refrigerator, numerous foodstuffs were arranged like jewels glistening, as if they were waiting for their moment to be served.

“That’s good food, right?”

“You don’t say.”

“That’s a package of tofu from a famous tofu shop in Kyoto, and I’ve seen the cardboard symbol they put over there in the original.”

“If it’s being used in the main house in Higashi Kujo, there’s no doubt about it.”

Then she nodded in satisfaction, and Kiryu slammed the refrigerator door shut.

“Well, our family doesn’t use it.”

“Eh?”

“I’m talking about my father. Ah there it is. As expected, father. You know me very well. “(T/N: I’m not really sure what this means.)

With that, Kiryu opened a drawer in the kitchen and fumbled around, pulling something out of the drawer.

“What’s that?”

“That’s right… For good measure, I’ll let you decide.

And with that, the fliers for pizza, sushi, ramen, and soba… were lined up.

“Wait, all of these are delivery!”

“That’s right?”

“Don’t “That’s right?” me! What about dinner?”

“That’s what this is for.”

“So.. Ahh so it’s like that. I understand. Even ojou-sama’s would also like to have junk food once in a while.

I guess they eat well managed food at home, and maybe she was not used to eating junk. The food was a bit of a waste, but it wasn’t going to go bad anytime soon, and I thought, well, it’s okay once in a while.

“No, I simply can’t cook at all.”

She declared it cutely, tilting her head.

You’re joking…
