Chapter 5 - Life Is But A Fleeting Moment

'Just stay calm and don't move as it probably hasn't confirmed our exact location.'

Unfortunately Ban could not think rationally like Joshua could.

When Ban saw the scary wolf looking straight in its direction it panicked and could not stay calm.

"Yip!Yip!"

Ban thinking that the wolf had already found it, got up crying and ran in the direct opposite to the wolf.

'No!'

Joshua could hear how scared and helpless Ban was, but couldn't bring himself to do anything.

He was frozen in fear.

Fear for his life that he had just regained. In front of this overwhelming fear all other thoughts seemed to have been suppressed.

Even though just earlier he had put his paw over Ban's to reassure it that everything was going to be okay, now he could not bring himself to do anything in face of the threat of death.

'I'm sorry Ban. I'm a coward...'

Joshua just lay there with his eyes tightly shut and tears welling up in the corner of his eyes.

Ban ran, but as proven by Josh earlier Yabans are just not made to run.

The wolf instantly caught up to Ban. There was no one there to help Ban...

"Yip!"

Ban gave one last yelp, futilely crying for help before-

*CRUNCH!*

Joshua at that moment could not help but open his tightly shut eyes to see the horror that had just transpired.

There reflecting in the moonlight a lone wolf standing proudly with a corpse of a lifeless pup held tightly in between its jaws.

It was Ban.

It's blood flowed down the lips of the wolf and dropped on the floor. One could see Ban's eyes wide open even in death.

The pair of eyes were lifeless as if in the moment before death Ban had given up all hope.

It was at this moment that Joshua remembered back to the time he first met Ban.

By the riverbank happily barking at each other with a look of absolute jubilance on the little one's face.

Even though Joshua would never admit it he had unconsciously been treating Ban as a younger sibling.

As family. Especially so in this unfamiliar world where Josh is left by himself.

It was at that moment when Joshua saw the lifeless eyes of his family that Josh felt that something snapped inside of him.

"Y-YIP! YIIiip..."

Joshua with tears flowing from his eyes and anger rushing to his head leapt at the wolf biting its leg and hanging on.

'GIVE ME BAN BACK! Give Ban back...'

Joshua's screams towards the wolf started to die down as Joshua just starts to weep knowing that Ban is already dead.

Even then as he is sobbing he still refused to to let go.

'Even if I'm weak I'll still bite out a pound of flesh from you!'

The wolf annoyed brutally kicks Joshua away sending him flying back and possibly fatally injuring him as he is still young, no older than Ban.

Though small, Joshua kept his word and bit off a small chunk of the wolf's flesh, but a wound like that would only give the wolf a bit of an itch.

'Ban... I'm sorry... I regret it all...'

With a heavy heart and body screaming in pain Joshua faints and loses consciousness.

The wolf leaves Joshua alone as he already has his mouth full with Ban's corpse and it would be too much trouble to carry another corpse as it only has one mouth.

The wolf quickly leaves with its meal in its mouth while the wolf originally at Joshua's group slowly drags the big Yaban away.

The wolves start retreating one by one and the curtains fall for Joshua's first night in this new world.

...

"Aeu..."

Joshua wakes up groaning as each movement of his body feels as if needles are pricking him.

It is morning.

'Ow.'

Joshua checks his body by trying to move it and comes to the conclusion that no bones are broken, but his body is badly bruised.

Joshua's plans of reaching the village today have been scrapped, seeing as how he can barely move.

Joshua looks up to observe his surroundings.

The birds were chirping and the Yabans are out rolling in the sun as if they had forgotten what happened last night.

'It's as if it was all nightmare, but I know what happened was real.'

'Even all the traces of the blood from last night is gone.'

Joshua noticed that the spots where blood had spilled on the ground last night strangely had no traces of blood at all.

Instead had magically grown little red flowers replacing all evidence of the blood spilled.

Joshua didn't pay any mind to when he first came here, but now looking at the vast field he can see the same little red flowers almost everywhere.

As far as the eye could see one would notice the red specs in between the swaying grass.

Cold sweat washed over Joshua as he realized what this beautiful field really looked like.

The vast field that once looked beautiful and serene in his eyes when he first came here now looked like an endless graveyard.

'This is hell.'

Joshua was indeed correct as this field was hell, for Yabans at least.

For the wolves it was a playground they visited every night to grab a late night snack.

Joshua couldn't help but feel angry seeing the Yabans happily play in the grass as if the night before never happened.

'It's not their fault...'

That anger he was feeling quickly dissipated as he knew it wasn't their fault. They were just too weak and trying to live their life to its fullest.

Joshua was then hit with a feeling of emptiness when he thought of Ban.

Ban whom he was just playing with yesterday was dead today.

Just like that he was gone.
