Chapter 6 - Discoveries

'For now I need to focus on recovering.'

'I'll try to get a bit closer to the village slowly, but with my body in its current condition I'll probably have to make constant stops. I don't see myself getting there today or tomorrow even.'

'That means I have to survive through at least two or more nights depending on how far I get and how much I recover.'

'The best thing I can do for myself and Ban is to live. Maybe one day I will be able to find out a way to get revenge on the wolves.'

'I can't discern every single wolf to find the one that killed Ban, but I know who led the wolves.'

'The big red one.'

'Wait for me.'

'I don't know how long it'll take for me to avenge Ban, but as the saying goes ten years is not too late for a mans revenge.'

'Plus, revenge is a dish best served cold.'

What Joshua didn't notice himself was that his experiences in this new world had gradually changed him. In this chaotic world only the strong live and the weak are but fodder for the strong.

With newfound determination Joshua pushes on forwards to the village, despite the pain wracking his mind and body, there is a cold chilling glint in his eyes.

...

It's been two days and nights since the eventful night when Ban died and Joshua's injuries have mostly healed. Except for occasionally feeling somewhat sore, Joshua could be considered to have fully healed from his injuries.

Not only that, but his destination is in sight. Today he is determined to reach his destination.

'I'm almost there. I should be able to make it there today.'

'During the time I spent healing, walking, and making it through the night I've learnt a few things.'

'First off my status.'

'I have leveled up a ton. After the night with Ban I seem to have leveled up to level 51 and in the two days I leveled up some more.'

'I'm still not sure what dictates the levels, but it definitely seems to correlate with what I do as I probably gained the huge chunk of levels when I bit off a chunk of the wolf's flesh.'

'It also shows that I am not considered young anymore, but an adolescent. So for Yabans the time period when they are considered young is extremely short.'

'Another thing I learned is that leveling up doesn't make me any stronger or healthier unlike in games.'

'What did help me though is the photosynthesize skill as it definitely played a huge role in how I recovered so quickly.'

'Not long after I set out the morning after Bans death my skill leveled up to level two and I could faintly feel a warm energy seeping into my body. I tried to control it and though it was hard at first I was able to somewhat direct it towards my wounds, speeding my recovery.'

'Around noon of the second day I was able to level it up a second time further speeding up my recovery. From this I learned that if I wanted to increase my strength I needed to focus on leveling my skills to strengthen myself.'

'This doesn't mean I should ignore my levels, but since I don't quite know how they function or the benefits they give I'll just wait till I get to level 100 first before I dig deeper into it.'

'Other than all this I also made two more important discoveries.'

'During the two nights I was not unlucky enough to have a wolf happen upon my group, but I think I now know why I was luckier those two nights.'

'The first discovery was on the night after my injuries lightened up. I had made some distance thanks to my recovering health so I was getting closer to the village.'

'That night I noticed that there were oddly less wolves in sight compared to the first night with Ban when even though only two wolves in the vicinity I could still see quite a few including the alpha in the distance.'

'This time there was only one wolf in my vicinity and one more far off in the distance where I could barely see.'

'After pondering on this I came to the the conclusion that it could only be due to me being closer to the village. This brought up the possibility that there are inhabitants in the village that act as a deterrent to the wolves.'

'Honestly I felt a little relieved as I was afraid that once I got the the village it would be deserted making for a wasted trip.'

'I once again strengthened my belief on the next night as I only saw one wolf in the distance. This did not mean that the wolves did not come near as if they didn't all the Yabans would have concentrated near the village, but it just meant that there were significantly less wolves.'

'My last and most important discovery was something I saw just this morning.'

'The village is in distance's view and I could see human figures moving about! It is indeed as I predicted, I'm getting so excited that I can hear my heart beat in my little Yaban body.'

'I just hope that they don't take me for food and roast me for dinner on the spot.'

'That would be tragic...'

With excitement at the thought of his first meeting with humans of this world Joshua marches on determined to quickly reach his destination.
