“Well then, Master Clyde, Miss Ashley. Thank you for your hospitality for the past years.” Hank said with a smile as he held a large bag of his luggage. Beside him, Jeanne also bowed with a smile.

The two of them were now heading back to the royal palace. The Sargent’s no longer needed a magician as there was no more demon beast in the estate, they were issued to leave.

“I’ll miss you…” Ashley murmured in a tearful voice as she stood alongside Clyde at the gates.

‘I’m glad I came here.’ For them, for the black wolf, and for Clyde. She agreed wholeheartedly.

Jeanne laughed and said, “I will come back again to visit. Miss Ashley, please come visit us at the royal palace. You can come anytime.”

“Yes, that’s right. After all, you’ll become His Majesty’s sister-in-law.” Hank interjected. Ashley shook her head, flustered and both Hank and Jeanne let out a laugh.

“Thank you Master Clyde for all that you have done.” They were bidding their farewells to the master, whom they served for four years.

Clyde smiled, but for a moment, Hank noticed a lonely look in his eyes. If their master was not Clyde, they probably wouldn’t have put so much effort until this far. With a glance back, still a smile on his face, he and Jeanne got into the carriage that would take them to the royal palace.

Right then and there,

“—what are you crying about?”

“You’re so noisy. You’re crying too, aren’t you?”

They both shared the same sadness, so they understand. After a while of facing each other in silence, the carriage started to leave. Ah, they were leaving. Jeanne wiped her tears and looked out the small window and muttered to the sad Hank, “I’ll be back and send carrot cookies to Miss Ashley.”

Hank’s eyes shone. That’s a good idea.

“That’s good. Make it tonight and send it over tomorrow. I will go with you, of course.”

“..tomorrow. We just parted, it’s too soon.”

“Then, the day after tomorrow.” He grinned as Jeanne looked at him and huffed.

Then, she grinned back and said, “No. Let’s do it tomorrow.”

Ashley was in the stables. The stables are now empty. As she closed her eyes, she saw the black wolf, Hank and Jeanne, but when she opened her eyes again, there was no one there. There was no one there but Clyde.

“It’s quiet, isn’t it?”

Hank and Jeanne meticulously cleaned up nicely that there was not even a speck of dust.

“That’s right.” Clyde’s voice sounded lonely.

All the shutters on the second floor, which were closed when the black wolf was still there, are now open. The stables are now bright with sunlight coming in.

‘It’s the same place, yet it looks completely different.’

""

Was this the stable that the black wolf used when it was still there?

Clyde said softly to the downcasted Ashley, “I will keep horses here, just like the other stables. Many horses will be raised here, and eventually there will be foals. This place will become lively.”

She tried to imagine it. It would be a pleasant sight to see all the stalls filled with the whines of horses, and a small colt walking around the place where the black wolf used to sleep. She felt a fresh breeze blowing into the gaping hole in her heart.

Ashley nodded with a smile, “That would be good. It seems very delightful.”

Clyde chuckled, and as a thought occurred to him, he even said in a teasing tone, “It would be nice if the main house could be lively with the birth of a child as well.”

“Yes, that would be nice.” It would seem to be fun if the place is lively. She nodded without much thought and Clyde’s face became serious as he stared at Ashley with his eyes wide.

‘Why is he so surprised?’

Confused at his reaction, she thought about it for a while. A foal would be born in this stable and it’ll become lively. In other words, a baby born in the main house—

When she understood the underlying meaning, she instantly became flustered. How could she unconsciously nod with a smile?

Seeing Ashley’s obvious reaction, Clyde let out a breath in relief, “Good. No, not good. I was surprised.”

That is right. Ashley nodded vigorously several times.

Clyde smiled mischievously, “But I guess that means Ashley agreed to it. I’m glad to hear that.”

“…it’s almost time for dinner! Let’s go! Let’s go right away!”

Clyde chuckled as he watched Ashley run out of the door.

At the table, Ashley brought sautéed flounder, vegetable salad and other dishes to her mouth. The Sargent’s food is delicious today, too.

Ashley suddenly felt a gaze on her and looked up. Clyde was looking at Ashley with a smile on his face. He looked very happy.

“…What is it?”

“It’s nothing. I just thought about the difference from the first time we dined together.”

She recalled at that time, she was afraid of Clyde since he is the descendant of the brave hero. But now…

Ashley opened her mouth and smiled, “I’m fine now. Because you’re my fiancée.”

Clyde’s eyes widened and then he smiled happily.

The maids were also smiling at the sight of the two as they set the dessert bowls on the table.

“La France compote.”

It is made of pears boiled down in sugar water. It has more moisture and liquid than jam, so they can enjoy its freshness and texture.

‘It’s pears.’

It reminded her of when she was a black rabbit in a previous life.
