Chapter 75 Black-Eyed Butterfly Spirit Part 4

Translated by Snowfall77

When Xia Ge didn’t immediately answer, the Master’s face got gloomy.  Putting down his book, he walked towards Xia Ge, spittle flying: “Xia Wuyin, you must remember that you are not the same as other disciples.  If they know one thing, you must know ten things!”

“You are a special disciple!

“Moreover……”

The master was salivating at the chance to teach a lesson to the smelly little bastard who liked to skip class and not pay proper attention to lessons.  Unfortunately for him, he was interrupted by a poker-faced Xia Ge saying: “The Hui Xue Dan’s three main materials are Lianxue grass, Ningxue powder, and Yiweibaigu flowers.”

Master: “……”

Xia Ge then added with a sincere expression: “Should I also talk about its supplementary materials?  There is Liuli powder, Ning……”

Master: “……”

“Alright, alright, sit down.”  The Master gave Xia Ge one final glare: “And stop with the disorderly little tricks!”

Sitting down like an upright, studious disciple, Xia Ge nodded: “Yes, yes.”

Done imparting that moral teaching, the Master’s eyes then fell on another disciple: “Huo Bai, stand up and speak about how to refine Tanhuanzui dan.”

Tanhuanzui?  Gluttonous and drunk?!

Xia Ge’s hold on her book wasn’t firm, and the thick red danshu hit the incense burner on her table with a ‘bang.’  Next was a ‘crash’ as the incense burner fell off the table, taking the danshu with it.  Leaving Xia Ge’s pile of messy drawings fully exposed to the Master’s sweeping gaze.

Xia Ge: “……”

Before Huo Bai could even stand up, the irascible voice of Goatee Master bellowed: “Xia Ge, go outside and stand until class is over!”

Xia Ge: “This, Master……I can explain……”

Goatee Master sneered: “Explain what?  Explain how in your Danfang class you’re doing drawings for your Formation class?  Or perhaps you want to explain how you were reading folk legends during Formation class, and now you’re using your Danfang class to finish your Formation homework?”

Xia Ge: “……”

Xia Ge tried again: “……Master, please let me stay to hear how Tanhuanzui dan is refined.”

Not deigning to look at Xia Ge, Goatee Master snorted disdainfully: “Go on Huo Bai, how is Tanhuanzui refined?”

The now standing Huo Bai: “……”

Huo Bai stood quietly, seemingly thinking hard, before suddenly raising his head, full of confidence.

“Kuangrenxiao, Zuilinglong, and……”  Huo Bai kept listing materials, one by one, in an assured tone.  Yet Xia Ge observed that, for some reason, Goatee Master’s expression kept getting uglier and uglier.

But Huo Bai kept rattling on with conviction, until he finished with: “And the last material is invariably Sinu grass!”

Blue veins were popping all over Goatee Master’s hand that held his book.

Xia Ge, sensing something was wrong, wished she could retreat.  Huo Bai hadn’t noticed anything amiss however, and was feeling decently happy with himself: “Master, am I correct?”

Goatee Master had reached the ends of his patience: “You also go outside and stand until class is over!!”

Huo Bai: “???”

Seeing Huo Bai’s confusion, Goatee Master snarled: “Don’t know why I’m telling you to get the hell out?  Fine.  What did I ask you?”

Huo Bai: “……ah, Tanhuanzui.”

Goatee Master: “And what was your answer?”

Huo Bai still didn’t understand: “Tanhuanzui.”

Goatee Master raged: “Get out!  Get the hell out of here!!  Your answer was [Covetous Addiction: Spring Poison]!!  Someone so young and so corrupted!  Who asked you how to make [Covetous Addiction: Spring Poison]?!  It’s truly……truly outrageous!”

Xia Ge: “……”

Huo Bai: “……”  Fuck.

Everyone else: “???”

Outside the hall, autumn was in the midst of a hot spell.  Xia Ge stood in the blistering sunshine with a water-filled kettle on her head.  Huo Bai was next to her, water-filled kettle on his head too.

Danfeng’s special disciple.  Danfeng’s glorious 1st place earner in the entrance examination.  The unforgiving sun shone down the ‘fruits’ of Danfeng, drying them out in the sweltering heat.

One was a sneaky puppet master and the other was a spy from the Demon Sect.  Well, perhaps after the brilliance came the unbearable darkness.

Ignoring the kettle on her head, Xia Ge was lost in her own thoughts.

“Hey.”

Xia Ge was brought back to earth when she heard a bored voice asking: “Did you make your doll yourself?”

Subconsciously lowering her head to look at her puppet, Xia Ge’s kettle almost fell off.  Luckily, as soon as her body tilted, {ghost and shadow} automatically stabilized her so that not a drop of water spilled out of the kettle.

She’d gotten so used to the life-saving skills of {ghost and shadow} that it’d become practically instinctual.

“……um, yeah.”

Giving Huo Bai the side eye, Xia Ge saw a young man dressed in Danfeng’s red and white clothes.  With slightly pink cheeks, his face was not as deathly pale as it was when he was Bairen.  And the crazy aura was gone, replaced by a reserved, taciturn personality.

What a fucking actor.

Xia Ge thought that, besides mixing up Tanhuanzui with [Covetous Addiction: Spring Poison], it’d been more than a bit dumb to list ingredients for [Covetous Addiction: Spring Poison].  But then she hadn’t been the one who’d heard Goatee Master wrong.

“Oh.”  Huo Bai said nothing further.

Inwardly sighing, Xia Ge thought to herself that they both couldn’t be so rigid.  She needed to find something to talk about with him.

But what should she ask?

Question: When are you going to steal the key?

Or maybe this question: Who is your fellow spy in Jianfeng?  Is this an opportune time to talk about it?

Or how about: Do you have a route to the Demon Sect?  Perhaps you could divulge a little bit about that?

No, Xia Ge would have to be mentally handicapped to ask any of those questions.

Xia Ge realized that shutting the fuck up was, in fact, the best course of action.

Instead it was Huo Bai who hesitantly broke the silence again: “Actually……”

Xia Ge: “Mmm?”

Huo Bai sounded puzzled: “I feel like I’ve met you somewhere else before?”

Chest tightening, Xia Ge’s cautiousness flared up, and she had the sudden urge to write a hundred thousand ‘blood letters.’

……dear Huo Bai, you’ve met me ‘somewhere else’ more than once.
